So pretty much what the 14 year old V8 in my Tundra gets if I'm driving easy?

Typical Fords, drive at actual speeds and they suck back the fuel, but the EPA doesn't test at typical highway speeds so they get much better numbers. Even with 10 gears they still optimize it for 55 mph. Hopefully Toyota keeps this in mind with their TT setup and uses the extra gears to keep the RPM's down in the 60-80 mph range.

That's not too good. The PowerBoost is a $4000 option I believe.

I got 20mpg going 55 for a long stretch of road.

The powerboost is primarily helping toward city driving, thats where it picks up most of its mpg gain over the regular 3.5

In another video he tried to hypermile the truck and got amazing fuel economy for a half ton. However its unrealistic driving for anyone and anywhere.

Again, I'm not loving the new F150, don't know what to expect from the new Tundra. So I'm thinking I'll grab a 2021 Tundra and wait and see.

I drove a Prius for a couple years. It takes a while to get used to, and even then it’s not an experience that could be classified as fun.

But yeah the engine braking has to be manually engaged; otherwise it’ll just gently coast forever. It was a nice way to charge the hybrid pack and save the brakes on a long grade. It’s part of the reason that Prius brakes last forever.

That is gonna leave a mark. Wow.

Yes he was at 75 mph, uphill, into wind. But also did return trip downhill and with wind behind.

So...no matter what, the mileage is by comparison astonishingly poor vs advertised capability.

I drive the same style of roads in Tundra often... and my highway mileage is about 14-16. This is with 6 spd, 4.30 gears, mechanical fan, hydraulic PS, port freaking fuel injection, 10.6 in of ground clearance and no air dam, no radiator louvers, and a sheet metal truck.

19.4 mpg on a hybrid is cringey.

if it really is 430 hp 570 lbs torque I dont find that to be that bad, but my tundra is one of the ones that gets total shit for MPG.

    thats also winter blend fuel

Toyota will have a commercial spot during the Super Bowl in 2 weeks. It'll be great if Toyota releases the new 2022 Tundra commercial during the big game.

toyota has always been good at this.

I think we should know soon. Im ready to see it

I have on my short list for later this year, F-150 Hybrid, GMC AT4 6.2, and Tundra of course. That would be my 5th tundra, LOL.

Agreed, it is all cringey. Looks like powertrains in 1/2 tons peeked in 2007.

This is the problem. Every time I look into a newer powertrain with better numbers in a half-ton, the compromise negates the increased fuel economy.

Ford Powerboost/Ecoboost - not eco in normal driving, worse mpgs than advertised, when you add in premium fuel...increase totally negated
Ford Coyote - comes with increased payload, slightly inproved fuel economy, but sacrafices stability - curb weight under 5k, little scary towing heavy.
Ram Hemi/etorque- see all of the above add in shitty rear gears.
GMC 3.0 Duramax - may be better than advertised fuel econmy, but rear axle only rated for 3,800 lbs, and the 150k drop the transmission?
GMC 6.2L - slightly better fuel economy, better power, but premium fuel negates gains

I hope the new Tundra is something special, but no one seems to come up with anything that interesting when you look at the details, and I doubt Toyota will either. Hope I'm wrong.

I've been thinking my next move will be an AT4 Duramax, but maybe it will just be to add the Magnuson Supercharger to my 2018 Tundra.

    good analysis.

Ill add to it that the trucks you mentioned have really gimmicky features to improve mileage. These features degrade short and long term reliability.

It just goes to show how psychologically powerful that little mpg readout is. People will buy vehicles that are less reliable AND that cost more to own over 5 years so they can see 17mpg combined instead of 13mpg.

Had to get a boost the other day and the fella had the z71 1500 duramax, 4dr long bed. The thing was huge, but was gorgous, quiet over all amazing.
    Would I buy one?

Also, if I understand correctly, CAFE doesn't care about the grade/cost of fuel.

The big change is that around that time 1/2 tons changed from being workhorses to family carriers. The priorities have changed, at least for the big 3. They have HD's if you want the raw V8 power and are primarily doing work. The fact Toyota doesn't have that would lead me to believe they are targeting both working and family transport. The regular V6 TT will most likely have the same issues as the EB line, other than possibly the premium fuel issue - I see the hybrid version being the one they target for the workhorse since it can help keep off the boost while cruising. It will take a hit with the payload, but as long as they get at least 2k lbs with the hybrid then it will have lots of room for increased towing.

Its like the people who buy a diesel for MPG concerns and it takes them 12 years to offset the maintenance, fuel, and up front purchase price in fuel efficiency savings.
