Sup guys, I just purchased a 21' limited and got the registration and was shocked it was $768. I know the DMV classifies trucks as commercial vehicles. Someone told me that by getting a camper shell and getting it changed at the DMV as a passenger vehicle the fee will drop a lot. Is this true, and if so what does the savings look like? thx!

Yes, it's true. However, if you're ever caught without the shell on the bed, there's a fine/ticket.

No savings is worth the time waiting at the DMV :D

It would probably be worth it until you get that ticket when it’s off.

Wow!!!!! $768 per year? What state is this? Why would all pickups be commercial? That's rediculous!!!!!

It would of been $1400 for me lol. It’s the biggest reason I didn’t get a new truck this year

Doesn’t ca know tundras aren’t HD trucks, no payload!
But for real it is silly to classify half tons with HD trucks

Paid $89 in TN to tag my truck this year. That was after the emissions test. :anonymous:

Crazy the difference between here and CA. Hard to believe, but KS is really bad, too. You have to pay property tax in KS on personal vehicles for 5 years. It depreciates over that time, but first year a new Tundra can cost you up to $838 depending on the county you’re in (I looked it up as a buddy in KS was telling me how much it would be, and I didn’t believe him).

Yeah you’re probably right. Have a lot of friends in sun valley/Stanley, they’re definitely getting annoyed.

or even better, my buddies in whitefish in MT are just laughing at the Cali people buying mansions site unseen then promptly selling them once they realize it’s grey skies most of the time in the winter haha

Ouch! I thankfully don't have emissions in my county and they dropped our wheel tax. It's only $44 to renew. Used to be $50 more with the wheel tax.

For those non Cali peeps here's my 2020 reg fees.

    Ca reg fee $196
    License fee $226 (tax deductible)
    Weight Fee $154
    County/district fee 8
    Smog abatement $20
    Owner responsibility fee $0.00
Grand total for my 2017 Tundra : $604.00

    Where does the money go?

    DMV related fees:

There was an estimated total of $8.2 billion in DMV fees collected in the 2016-17 year. Compared to a fee map for the 2014 DMV fees, local government, the DMV, and the General Fund saw a greater percentage of funds allocated to them in the 2016-17 year.

    Local government: 43.6%

    CHP: 26.3%

    DMV: 12.6%

    State Highways: 12.7%

    Air Resources Board: 1.6%

    General Fund: 1.6%

    Environmental Agencies: 0.5%

    Department of Justice: 0.3%

I bought my 2020 new Tundra last March, and the license plate cost $684.00

I just received the bill for this next years license plate, $567.25

In Minnesota the cost falls every year and bottoms out at ten years. Then stays put for the rest of the vehicles life.

This is very interesting. Ca resident here and never heard of such a thing.

my one question would be. How would any law enforcement agency know if you completed the form and say removed the shell.

if you have a custom plate, he would have to run it and notice the passenger vs commercial designation.

Truck plate have 1 letter. Passenger vehicle plates have 3 letters. This would be obvious from looking, if you’re getting stopped just for that it would be lame however they could do it

ive read you only save on the weight fee. So don’t buy a shell just for the “savings”
