My wife and I used the Dave Ramsey method (gazelle intensity! Beans and rice and rice and beans!!) to get completely out of debt 13 years ago. We had credit cards and student debt and had been making minimum payments for years. It took far less time to pay all that off than we thought it would. Admittedly, we hadn’t had a very proactive attitude toward our finances. Ramsey’s program was DEFINITELY for us. Once we made our final payment, we had an Irish friend who actually worked as a Riverdancer. We asked her if she’d dance a jig on our cut-up credit cards. We filmed her and sent it in to Ramsey, and he featured it on his show.

Just because a guy becomes wealthy helping people successfully regain financial control of their own lives doesn’t make him a snake oil salesman or a grifter. He’ll be the first person to tell you that there is nothing patented or new or revolutionary about his methods. All we did was make a list of our debts and paid them off in order from smallest to largest (the debt snowball method). It’s simple, and it worked for us. The price of admission? We bought one of his books for $15 and listened to his radio show for a while.

Aside from my mortgage, I owe a bit on my Tundra. No other debt. I get strange looks all the time when I tell people I have no credit cards. It’s hilarious to me that some people who spend a large chunk of their monthly nut in payments on multiple lines of credit think that I am the one who has the problem.

This is what I think Dave Ramsey's program basically amounts to:
