Not to high jack this thread, but I know this will be an informative place to ask. Thanks for all reccomendations or advice in advance.:hattip:

I'm looking to buy my first handgun soon. I want something reliable, easy-ish to clean, and something with a safety.

What brands do you all recommend?

As far as caliber, I'm thinking something small-ish like a 9mm. Don't want to go too crazy.

You need to go handle and fire different handguns, most the ranges around me have rental guns to try out.
For me, Glocks do not fell comfortable in my hands, but M&Ps, HKs, and Sigs do.
I would recommend sticking with the major brands (glock, S&W, HK, Sig, Springfield, ...). Expect to pay at least $500, likely more, my first was $900 and have some that were around $1200. I carry a M&P shield 9mmor a 686+ 357 revolver.
Right now with how fast guns are selling and how difficult it is for stores to get more inventory, you may actually pay more than MSRP just because demand is so high and supply is a big unknown for gun stores.

Sounds like the Smith and Wesson M&P line might be something you want to check into. Those meet all of your wants and won't be too overpriced in this market. But I agree with Cfinke about getting your hands on a few different models, which will probably be a challenge right now. Good luck.

Edit to add, you are likely going to have a hard time finding any ammo for common handgun calibers at the moment. Most reputable stores are holding back a box or two for new gun purchases, but as far as training goes, it's going to be a tough road for a while. Hopefully you have a some buddies that shoot that may be able to hook you up, but its pretty slim inventory out there right now.

Check the build link in my signature.
What those last two guys said. The Manual Safety does narrow down the field a little, but there are still a LOT of different options out there. I'm personally a fan of the Sig P320 and P365 (both are available with manual safety). The M&P's are also available with manual safety, HK's, anything in a 1911 platform, the list goes on. Best thing is to hit some ranges that have rentals or loaners and put your hands on as many as you can.

If you're having local gun shows, go to one and hold some guns and see how they feel in your hand.
That's better than the pressures and biased opinions you'll get from a gun store employee.

If you do decide to buy at a show, walk the entire show and check prices before you buy.
I bought a Glock 43X at a show 3 days before the election.
Several FFL dealer were selling them at $700 or $800.
I found a dealer selling them for about $525, the price they should be offered for.

Once you narrow it down to a few guns, find a range that rents them and try them out.
Most of the ranges around here will only charge 1 rental fee and let you shoot a few different guns.
Of course you'll have to buy their overpriced ammo.

Not a fan of external manipulates safeties, but have no qualms if that is what you want.

I'm a huge Glock fanboi, but that counts out your external safety need.
    I'd suggest handling a Glock 43, 43X, 48, all single stack 9mm.
Glock 19 or 45 (both 9mm) if a double stack fits in your hand better.
    You might like it..:eek2:

As others stated, look at S&W M&P line, Springfield XD (used to own a few of them), Sig P365 is well admired among many.
I wouldn't recommend a 1911 type single action trigger for a first gun, but that's just my opinion..

As others stated ammo is tough to find right now.
I'd buy in bulk online if possible..
A good tool to help find some online..

My squirrel slayer 2.0! I upgraded from a 4x32 scope to this Holosun red dot. I also added a picatinny rail I got from Amazon so I could mount it. Now to get it zeroed and she's ready!

Glock pistols fit my hands better pretty much any other pistol, my advise it to visit your LGS and fondle a few different semi-auto similar in size to what you are looking for.

Whatever brand you choose make sure it fits your hand comfortably, and that you are able to manipulate any external controls. Glock is perfect for me, and it might be perfect for you, but you won't know until you handle and compare them.

These guys have covered it well, along with the previous suggestions.

Definitely, go to a range and try some different firearms.

Don’t feel awkward about standing in the gun shop and literally just grasping the firearm and holding it for a few minutes.
Look at it, feel it, rack the slide.
    Just see how it feels.
You will find one that “fits” you.
    Different grips feel well, different.

The pattern on the grip itself will even make a difference.

As stated before, S&W M&P, Glock, Springfield XD and Sig will offer a really good starting point with lots of options and different grip styles.

Look for something that’s a popular gun that has a number of accessories.
Finding a good holster for something out of the ordinary can be difficult.

I’m a Sig guy. The P320 Compact is extremely versatile.
However, the P365 is an extremely well shooting CCW.

9mm can be hard to come by currently, but if you don’t mind the load, a .40 is readily available.

    One other thought...
    Don’t be shy about a .22.
It’s a good, inexpensive practice tool.
Rounds are available and so are some good firearms.
Taurus makes a great .22 that is fun to shoot.

Try these guys for deals as well.
    guns.deal
It works best if you have the part number or UPC but it will find you some great deals.

Good luck with the new obsession.

There were only about 100 of these imported, and cost was over $5,000. The last few that sold on Gunbroker went for 15-20k.

    For example: https://www.gunbroker.com/item/881139859

I love my Gen 2 Glocks, no finger groves.

But the Gen 5s are nice as well, very happy with my G45.
Not a fan of the Gen 3 and Gen 4.
The Gen 5 new frame design without finger grooves still allows to instantly customize its grip to accommodate any hand size by mounting the different back straps.
Those backstraps help a lot for the guys that say the don't like the way a Glock fits their grip.
