Unsecured? In a garage an eighth of a mile from my closed gate on 20 acres in the country? I could justifiably shoot the SOB just for being inside my fence at night. That in itself is enough of a threat to me and my family. Of course, I didn't make all of that clear to you in the post you quoted. The truck is locked anytime I'm out of it when off my property. That is secured according to the law.

I say anyone who breaks a car window to steal should be forced to eat the broken glass. There will be no repeat offenses!

Public canings. The punishment has to be enough to deter. Then again, There are already thieves who will kill anyone that catches them just to avoid jail. That's also why lethal force is more understandable these days. Some thugs will kill you over 10 bucks, and idk if the one I just caught breaking in is one of them.

Well, the new window went in today without a hitch. OEM glass. I tipped the tech cause he went the extra mile with the shop vac and compressed air trying to get out all the glass that fell down inside the door. I truly believe he got 99% of it. Anyway, no more plastic/tape, wind noise and poor visibility. Yahoo!!

Just a thought. Should we have capital punishment for stealing? If we find it justifiable to shoot and kill someone then shouldn't a person who is convicted in a court of law be hanged?

This really bugs you that there are some people out there that don't want other people stealing, destroying, messing with their stuff and will do anything to keep that from happening huh? As long as I can do what I want on my own property then I could care less what the law says about the punishment for stealing. You step on another man's property with bad intentions.... you might want to decide first if your life is worth risking. If we as land/property owners can't do what we need to, to take care of ourselves, our family and our property then something is wrong.

Once you realize that Ruggybuggy is a Canadian, it makes more sense (no offense Ruggbuggy, but the mindset, down here in Texas is completely different than up there in Canada).

    Apples and oranges.

One is punishment under the law after the fact. The other is a moment of uncertainty with lots of unknowns.

You have come into contact with someone you already know is not operating on the same moral compass as a good citizen. How far off is their compass? Are they armed? Are they violent? Are they sane? Given that the only thing you know about them is that they are willing to break the law to take something that doesn't belong to them; are you willing to give them the benefit of the doubt on all these questions when it could cost you your life? Is someone else automatically wrong if they feel differently on this?

Who’s the guy in my state in Illinois that shot the guys in his driveway trying to steal his car. I don’t believe he got it trouble. I’ll try to find it. Unless they came towards him when he came outside to confront them.

It has nothing to do with being "bugged" by it. It was a simple question if capital punishment should be applied for acts of theft which you didn't answer and yes I believe in capital punishment for murder.

I get it, you don't want your stuff taken. I have no issue with someone defending themselves and using whatever means possible to do that but if your not being threatened does it justify taking a life? Would you call the police before you went outside with you gun? I'm not anti gun. I have lots of guns and I would have no issues using it if someone was breaking in my house and threatening my life or my family. If someone was breaking into my truck I would call police first then the gun would come out to protect my life but not to protect the truck.

You have to remember that once you take a life it's not over for you. You have to live with that for the rest of your days and relive that moment over and over.

It's true you have to cope with it, even if you don't wind up in trouble legally. Each person has to decide for themselves whether or not they are willing to bear that, but for those that are or have carried that burden, only they can decide if it's worth it. It is something you'd have to deal with, but it's also not new. Many before have dealt with it. It's something any balanced individual hopes to never have to deal with, but it does happen.

It boils down to a theft deterrent. If thieves knew there were better than average odds that their victim was armed, and that they could be legally shot.... it might just make for a more honest society.

When the citizen has to be the deterrent then that's a breakdown in the justice system.

I've been very lucky because in my rural area I have never had any issues with theft. When I leave for the night my door is left unlocked. My garage is also never locked and half the time my keys are left in the truck. My buddy who lives down the road is the same way. Hey has a padlock on his garage and it's never locked and it's full of tools, motorcycles and snowmobiles. May be if I was a victim of crime over and over again I might feel different.

Police are never a deterrent because they are STRICTLY reactionary. They only show up after the fact. Laws are not proactive and do not prevent crime. You cannot legislate civility. If the citizen is unwilling to be a deterrent then they are just waiting their turn to be a victim.

But couldn't the law be a deterrent if the punishment was sever enough. Don't some Arab countries chop the hand off of thieves? That's a pretty good deterrent.

They still have thieves. You can be put to death, theoretically, for various crimes. Still happens. So, no, the laws are not a deterrent nearly as much as an armed and willing populace.

My believe is that the majority of the populace doesn't have the proper training to confront criminals.

Stats are not all there is to it. Drastically different cultures, values, and national origins. That's also an assumption of accurate reporting from either source.

Show me a stat that shows a crime and murder rate that is lower than Great Britain, Canada or Autrailia. Similar societies.

The criminal justice system is a business for profit. Nuff said! As a matter of fact, greed might be a bigger problem than crime in our society.

Still flawed and inaccurate because they are VERY different. A more accurate way would be to go by different states and cities within this country.

I-40 corridor is horrible for this. Lots of gang activity and tweakers looking for more drugs. When we go to Albuquerque, I ask my good friend where the decent hotels are to stay at.

I do not see anyone, in this thread, acting "like a badass". I see a very serious discussion about a very serious topic. Drawing your weapon with the intention of shooting someone is about as serious as it gets. As I stated earlier, I have pulled mine three times. And each of those three times, I WAS SCARED SHITLESS! Not for my safety, in that moment, but for the thought of having to end someone's life.

Look, I get it. You feel a person should not be shot for the single reason of theft. And I would not want to have to kill someone for that single purpose. BUT, I will absolutely draw my weapon in an attempt to cease the theft and hold the perpetrator at gunpoint until the police arrive. What happens beyond that point is solely up to the alleged thief. I understand that you would avoid any contact whatsoever, and hope that the justice system solves it for you. That is your right. I have little faith in the justice system and I cannot be so passive. That thief decided to risk his/her life the moment they came onto my property with the intention of taking or damaging my property. I do not blame others, in this thread, for stating that shooting a thief is a deterrent, because they are correct. But, you are in Canada, so I get it.
