My nephew has signed papers and has his orders

19 July 2021 ft Jackson sc for 10 weeks of basic

Then 18 weeks combat medic school

    Then 3 weeks jump school

    Then 82nd airborne

the rangers tried to lure him away but he held fast for airborne.

he wants to be a doctor and believes this will be the best course for him.

Yup, I did tell him my thoughts on it when he asked me, pros and cons, but in the end I told him he has my unwavering support.

Thank him for his dedication to serve our country. I remember being so proud when my son told me he was going to serve (Navy).

It sounds like your nephew has a good head on his shoulders and knows what he's doing. Many people join the Army blindly and just accept whatever they are offered. He'll do well.

My least favorite part of my Basic Training at Fort Jackson (besides getting stuck in Reception for 2 weeks because they over-booked Basic), was doing flutterkicks at 0430 and seeing the lit up Taco Bell sign just outside the fence.

Tell him that they'll be watching him and taking notes as soon as he gets off the bus. I had a couple of wiseass buddies from Slidell, Lousiana that I met in Reception and even though I wasn't part of their bullshit, I was lumped in with them because I was near them. I ended up getting stuck in a platoon with a bunch of assholes and ex-convicts - they were kind of fun though...

Please thank him for what he's about to do. It'll be great experience for him.

Sometimes the best laid plans of mice and men go far astray...

My youngest son joined the army in august of 2001. Exactly 1 month later the twin towers came down in NYC. He was with some of the first to go in and start setting things right.
It was the roughest year ever for my wife and I.
After all the damage and PTSD crap, he’s now squared away with a solid job, buying a house, and all the rest.

you just can’t predict the future
