The unofficial Tundras.com MMA thread — who ya got?!

Can’t believe we don’t have a thread dedicated to MMA and/or UFC fights. I got into this very recently (just before COVID hit). A friend from church who has been doing jiujitsu his whole life got me into it. I haven’t been in a real fight since high school, but I have become quite hooked. It’s like an extremely fast, high stakes game of chess.

Who do you have in some of these upcoming cards?

Poirier vs McGregor 2?
I’ve watched a lot of Poirier’s recent fights. I’m a fan. Dude is TOUGH. And people forget that he has beat some big names (go watch his Gaethje fight). But if he comes at McGregor this weekend looking like he did against Dan Hooker, I don’t see him winning.

Jan vs Izzy?
As much as I want to see someone humble Izzy, he is just too good. I thought Costa had a chance (“if he could just land something...”), and look how that turned out. I do like how Jan counters, but if I were a betting man, I’d bet on Izzy on this one.

Stipe vs. Ngannou 2?
Ngannou is a beast. A BEAST, I tell you. And a genuinely good guy outside the ring. But Stipe’s fight IQ is too high. It could go either way if Ngannou lands early. But I have Stipe fighting smart on this one.

 

Hmmm...maybe I can believe there is no existing MMA thread...

 

I’m gonna try this one more time. Did any of you see Volkanovski Ortega last weekend? Probably the best fight I’ve ever seen in my life. That 3rd round. Unreal.

Have you seen the first UFC yet? Yes, UFC 1. I watched it on VHS damn near 30 years ago. If you haven’t seen it, watch it. No rounds, no points, no weight divisions, and basically no rules. Only rules I can remember were no biting and no eye gouging. Lmao. You could pull hair, kick ‘em in the balls, you could probably spit in their face if you wanted to. And then the winners kept fighting tournament style til there was 1 winner. If you’re going to be a UFC fan, you gotta see how it started.

I rented UFC on PPV with my buddy when it came out. It wad about $30, made a VHS copy so we could each watch again.

It was crazy back then with all the stuff you described.

Joyce Gracie was taking on 300 lbers on his white Gee

 

Yup. Watching Gracie use his Gee to choke fools out was pretty impressive. It was a completely different sport before the point system. It was a straight up street fight. I think it was UFC 4 when Joe Son repeatedly got his balls pummeled with punches. And Kimo lost his fight to Gracie cuz he wouldn’t let go of his hair. Lmao. That’s some shit you would see in a school yard fight in Jr. High.

 

I went to my first UFC fight in May, the one in Jacksonville where they first brought back a full arena of fans. Fuckin insane. It’s also the one where one fight ended with some dude having his tibia/fibula shattered, and the very next fight began with that. Four bones in two legs broken within about 10 seconds of fight. Best part is neither guy realized and tried to walk on it, and collapsed. One dude (fuckin luv this guy) looked down, said fuck it, and tried to keep fighting. No shit, he seemed like he could still win
