Are problems with the 5.7l FFV reason enough not to buy?

    Greetings gents, new member here.
About to buy my first truck and am very interested in a Tundra. I've had very good luck with Japanese autos so far (2 Honda Civics with high mileage and basically no issues) which led me to Toyota.
With what I want out of the truck in terms of towing, I'm leaning towards the 5.7l.
That being said, I'm from Michigan. I'm reading about people having cold start issues as well as problems with a fuel sensor related to the Flex fuel engine. Does anyone have any hard stats in terms of what percentage of Tundras were affected by this? Or has Toyota come out with a fix that really solves the problem?
This is the biggest purchase that I will have ever made so I wanted to do my research. I guess I'm wondering if I'm making a mountain out of a mole hill, or if this is legitimate reason to look at another brand.
I appreciate any and all advice. Cheers!

Those don’t seem to be very common issues. To be fair, none of the 5.7L’s issues seem to be very common. It’s as solid and reliable as it gets for half tons.

Welcome from NC! No issues here however I did purposefully purchase a non flex fuel 5.7. I would suggest purchasing soon just in case the 5.7 is gone for the next model year.

I have had 3 tundras with the 5.7 flex fuel engines. Over 600,000 miles driven on the 3 trucks with no engine issues.

    Michigan here, too. Welcome.

My 5.7 has been perfect for 160k.

Non, flex fuel, but I won't be afraid to have it on my next Tundra, like said above. It may be the last year for the 5.7. I WILL have a replacement before it's discontinued.

No experience with the FF trucks but more importantly, maintenence records of you are buying used.
Since you will be towing, make sure to get the bigger gas tank! 38 gal is the only way to go towing, good luck!

    You bet.
It's an option 2016 and up I belive, SR5 upgrade package. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.
The small 26 gallon tank makes towing a drag, unless you like spending time at gas stations. :D

I think you will find that the issues with the tundras are almost a joke compared to the other brands.

One of the first to SC a FFV back in 2015 with mine. It has not had any issues for 6 years. Just a solid reliable engine.
