Hello all, glad to be here. Couple weeks ago bought my first truck, an 06 DC with 110xxxx miles, and stalking these forums helped me make the final decision. Already put 1.5k miles on her with an ongoing road trip through the Southwest and she’s doing great! Love the size, the power, and it’s the ideal adventure mobile for me as I do a LOT of camping, long distance travel, and “overlanding” through North America... coming from an old Subaru that I literally drove to the ground, I have nothing but good things to say about it.

I do have a small list of upgrades to do to the truck when I get home back East. As well as some mechanical upkeep that is probably overdue. Keeping this “build” very low key and practical.

    1. Tire upgrade. She’s running General Grabber all seasons, and I’m looking at replacing them with the Falken Wildpeak AT3s in the stock size. More reasonably priced (~$800 online) than the BFG KO2s, and seem to be ideal for my type of usage. I have nothing against highway tires, even these ones, and they have so far taken me wherever I would want to go, but I want more peace of mind (without sacrificing too much MPG/handling) Anyone running those on their first gen? Any feedback on how they drive and wear on highways, and do in the occasional snow?

    2. Roof rack. I’ve done a little research and it seems that putting Yakima/Thule mounts, bars, and then a roof basket (from Rola, Maxxhaul, etc) would be the easiest/cheapest option. I’d like to have storage on top of the double cab for misc camping gear, firewood, and to keep things off the ground at night. Anyone have an example of their rig that may help me put everything together? The truck does have rain gutters (?) on top, are there mounts that clamp onto those as opposed to the door?

    3. Bed drawers. I threw together a simple sleeping platform in an hour with a trip to Home Depot, and am looking forward to spending more time developing an ideal camping/long trip setup in the back of the bed.

Thanks in advance! Happy to be here in this community.
