I would not do that with today's engines.
Use a quality full synthetic and call it a day.

    Lots of shenanigans.
Not to bring up an old thread but to life but do y'all recommend the Mobile 1 advanced fuel economy or the mobile 1 high performance? Also, what're your thoughts on royal purple? I was originally planning on using royal but seems like y'all prefer mobile 1

Will be changing my oil for the first time ever in my 2019 as I have ran out of free oil changes. Plan to use Mobile 1 Synthetic like I always have in my 2012 and Tacoma. Pretty sure I always grab the green label that is advanced fuel economy 0W20

I have been using Mobil 1 in everything, including boat, motorcycle, even lawnmower and snow blower for years.

But when investigating for my first oil change on my Tundra (at 3,000 miles) I decided to use Shell Rotella Gas Truck 0W-20 Full Synthetic. Not only did I find some info indicating superior performance, it's also a bit cheaper. Seems like a win win situation.

I used the Mobil 1 advanced fuel economy 0w20 in my 4Runner (and family members Toyota’s) and I had one complaint. For whatever reason during colder weather the engine was noticeably nosier. The same problem occurred in my old Honda Accord, my dads RAV4 and my wife’s Highlander. Never had an issue with the oil though. I do prefer the EP version because it’s quieter. Truthfully I stick with the TGMO for the above reason only.

Between my family members and I (8 for me alone) in total there has been over 20 different Toyota vehicles and ALL of them has that diesel engine sounding tick. And I have many people tell me it’s in my head but it’s not...and the tick never goes completely away. BUT certain oils lessen the loudness of the tick. Hence Why I prefer TGMO simply to due the motor staying quieter during startup and the slight warmup.

Mobil 1 is always a solid choice. It’s just gets the job done like a Toyota, Glock, or Michelin.

Gets some newspaper a lot of newspaper you don't need no valves and hoses BS, but you will need the oil filter wrench. :crapstorm:

Never add that tranny fluid to oil , unless its just before the change. Tranny fluid is very high detergent and will clean good , but don't run with it. Used to do this all the time in our race engines to help seat the rings quicker. One time we left it in too long and engine actually started to squeak. Maybe just add and run 10-15 min. to warm up just before oil change. Not sure about funny guy, but with screw in valve and hose , you won't have a mess. Just remove center cap on filter housing and screw in valve and this drains housing, before removal. And be sure and put large o-ring in proper location on housing. If you use plastic valve in filter box , try to add pc of hose to it then push it up in. Just MY opinion , STAY AWAY FROM DEALER AND QUICK LUBE PLACES, DO IT YOURSELF.

I've always used Mobil1 0W20 across multiple Toyota's including a Prius with 330k and a Yaris with 400k. Its quality oil and well priced.

I use Castrol GTX Magnatec now. I used Mobile 1 on the first oil change I did and the VVTI rattle got louder. The Castrol was on sale on Amazon so I bought it. The VVTI rattle was much quieter with the Magnatec.

Yep, it's an easy job. I have a special tool to remove the oil filter cover which is mandatory as they can get tight. I, also, have a magnetic thing that attached to the drain plug and let's you spin it off without getting oil on your hands. And I change out the gasket on the drain plug every oil fill. For the garage, I lay down a little fleece cloth I found that's great....I'll post the parts I use:

    Magnetic Drain Plug Remover: https://smile.amazon.com/ZOK-Remove...drain+plug+removal+tool&qid=1610841844&sr=8-2

Oil Filter Cover Wrench (Toyota does at least two different sizes...my Prius filter wrench is larger than the Tundra..weird!): https://smile.amazon.com/Motivx-Too...8-1-2738-298-3&vehicleName=2014+Toyota+Tundra

garage oil change pad (2x3) https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/...t-rug/l90793/4584456?q=garage+floor+pad&pos=4

As far as synthetic oil, I'm not too fussy....I just look for sales at Orielly's and AutoZone. I've also tried the synthetic Amazon Basics and it's just like Mobile One (IMHO). An engineer on youtube tested it and it's just as good as Mobile One. My favorite is Valvoline but synthetics are all pretty similar....and you always want to use the blend for High Mileage when she gets more than 75,000. (Per my mechanic friend who's been working on cars for 50 years...the high mileage has additives that's good for your rings and also helps prevent sludge buildup.) I, also, use OEM oil filters but the Wicks aren't too bad so will use them in a pinch. I never use Fram or Pennzoil ANYTHING in any of my vehicles....I think they are junk but that's just my engineer opinion!

Never seen that drain plug tool before...seems brilliant! I usually just put a plastic bag over my hand, catch the plug in the bag, and then turn it inside out. It’s a trick my dad used when I was a kid.

Y'all are a lot smarter than me cause I just let the hot oil run down my arm as I attempt to fish the drain plug out of the oil catch pan.

lol..I'm not that smart...just love watching car repair videos so learn some tricks. My daughter just told me her Mazda CX-5 just hit 50,000 so will be changing her oil this afternoon. (I believe Mazda's still use the canister oil filters but does have a stupid little cover over the drain/filter so will have to remove that.) I tried to help her find a good used Rav-4 or Sienna but they are overpriced here and Mazda's are pretty good with the new Japanese tranny they went to a few years back...got her a great deal on a used one.

I change all our vehicles every 5,000 miles with synthetic...removes guess-work on "when am I due for an oil change?" (Except for the Prius....the oil isn't even dirty at 5,000 so she gets changed every 10,000)

Oh, y'all may have the skid plate over your Tundras on the bottom but it's easy to remove...I think it's 12 or 14mm socket (5 or 6 bolts). Easy to get off...PITA to get back on so mine is stored in the corner of my garage...I don't do off-road stuff.

This guy on YouTube has some legit oil videos. I've used Kirkland 0W-20 in my last two oil changes on my 2010 Tundra and haven't noticed any difference in performance compared to the Mobil 1 I used to use. I haven't done any scientific comparisons, but I trust it. Much cheaper than Mobil 1 and it works the same as far as I can tell, so I'm happy!

Oh it's, also, a 2016...it's white but seems to be a quality vehicle. I got the oil changed and did have to buy the 8mm hex socket which is odd for a car builder to use those.

Everything I read said refill with 4.8 qts but I did and it was still pretty low....ended up putting in the entire 5 qts but still think it can use a bit more. (I'll check it again tonight) The Wixx filter was a little larger than the one on there so maybe it just holds more oil in there.

We didn't get an owners manual with the car so I searched around in the computer to find where to reset the maintenance alarm. Oddly, there's a setting where you can turn it off and it was off. (Makes me worry about the maintenance history of it.) So I reset it and turned on the notifications at 5,000 miles. The oil had almost 5,000 miles, however, and was just starting to look dirty so that's a good sign for the engine quality.

Interesting, I remember the first oil change on ours I found the same thing. I called the dealer where we bought the car and there response was to bring the car in and they could do an oil change to check on that. Ya right, gonna pay you to drain out all the new Mobil 1 just put in. I even called the parts department and checked the dipstick part number thinking maybe the wrong stick was installed at the factory when the car was built, no it's the correct one.

I just refill with 5 quarts and call it good, although still reads a bit low. Oh by the way wife's CX-5 is red!

Wow, glad I'm not the only one! Maybe somebody in Japan had a hard time translating from metric to qts!! The Mazda is very nice but didn't come with the owners manual but I did find it on-line which is good. Also, her car only came with one key fob so I ordered one on-line and will need to go to our Batteries, Plus store to get it programmed (needs a special computer). They dealer does it, too, but Batteries said they can do it for $70, so much cheaper.

Oh Eaganite...this is interesting. I have an Amsoil account so put in the Mazda in my garage and was looking at the specs listed. For oil capacities, this is what they have...so I think ours must be on the 5.1 qts side: Capacity ranges from 3.5L-4.9L 3.7 Qts-5.1 Qts.

I am genuinely curious, in a good way. What is it about AmsOil that makes it worth the considerable premium over another quality brand of synthetic oil ~ Mobile 1, for instance. Or even the Costco Kirkland brand of synthetic oil? If one does their oil and lubricant changes on schedule, is it really worthwhile to pay that extra premium for AmsOil. I just bought a new 2021 Tundra, and trying to decide if it’s actually that much better. And along those lines, if you purchase AmsOil in quantity, what is the cost per quart. That number (the $/qt number) is a little difficult to find.
    Thank You,
    Chuck

I have my 2016 CX-5 owners manual out and under engine oil capacities, between the two available engines...
2.0L Engine: With oil filter: 4.4 US qt.
2.5L Engine: With oil filter: 4.8 US qt.

Our CX-5 has the 2.5L engine.

I used to buy Amsoil a lot for my cars but haven't in a few years...I don't run my engines for longer than 5,000 miles (or one year) without doing an oil change so using Amsoil would be overkill. I do know folks who run Amsoil for 15,000 miles between oil changes. A gallon of 0W-20 is $30.10.

This is an interesting video on testing on synthetic oils....I was surprised Pennzoil did so well and how Mobile One did not....Amsoil took first place.
