Just returned from Florida. Took advice of many here and drove all over the place. Back in California now ( I know...why didn't you refuse to leave) and actually am a bit overwhelmed.
It appeared the areas North and South of Orlando were nice, kissimmee etc, some areas of Sarasota, Venice, and banana island and Cocoa Beach.. then finally areas of SE Florida... But we aren't city people, more village people with a dog, but like low crime, granite and marble and to be pampered kind of folks. We walk are dog and eat out alot, like outside entertainment, etc. What's your experiences? No cheating with million dollar homes. We are living comfortable, but I'm staying retired lol

I grew up in Brevard county, and at last check you can still get some decent bang for your buck there. Check out Indian harbor beach, Sebastian, Viera, parts of Melbourne, Palm Bay, and like @Bammer said, Satellite. Nothing is cooler than being able to walk out your front door and see a rocket launch from the yard. (Of course the further south you get from the Cape the less you’ll be able to see)

I think a lot of this will depend on just how hot you are comfortable living with for starters?
I love a lot of South Florida much of the year but then it is INSANE heat for a few months too!
Many of the nice spots not along the coasts are also crazy hot in the summer and there is little breeze then too to help you get by.

I have many Clients down there and I spend a lot of time there and they are in huge properties and guess what?
They do not live there in the Summer!
If you don't tolerate the Heat well and do need to choose just one place to live then I am not sure how far down the state you will be happy with?
Also worth noting is that the older I get the less excited I am about temp extremes though I would usually rather be Hotter than Colder I know we each have our own feelings about this.

Next I would say that you really need to get back there and try some more spots, there are plenty of great places that meet your wants smack in the middle of crazy growth areas that you might pick to live and then be over run in just a few years too,I have seen it all over Florida really and not too many people are happy when the sleepy town they picked to live wakes up!

There are stretches and spots of "Old Florida" left but they are vanishing rapidly for sure.

A few years ago the Stat was that 40K people were moving down to Florida every month and that has gone on for a lot of years and there is only so much habitable space down there and less fresh water, sound familiar?!

From LA to Jacksonville 20+ years ago was a culture shock for me. It was like being sent back in time, not in a good way. But eventually, it grew and better restaurants open up. But my heart is still in California, there's no better place to be. This time of year you can enjoy the beach, mountains, snow all in the same day. Go on a road trip to Reno/Vegas/Tijuana in just a few hours (depending which part of California you're coming from) and be home that evening. Driving the PCH from Sta. Monica to San Francisco was always my favorite. Driving through canyons of from LA county to San Fernando valley was the highlight of my daily commute.

I was in bed during the last earthquake as my bed bounced off the floor. Drove through brushfires on 101 and I5. Had to make a detour due to landslides. Be late an hour to work if you left 5 minutes late. Be an hour early if you left 15 minutes early.

I miss California! I miss Florida too........

I lived in Miami for 4 years, and traveled the entire state.
My advise is to distance yourself from any large metro areas and map out your escape routes early.

Hahaha! Yes, I do agree! Generator, extra fuel/propane, go bag, non-perishable food pantry, etc. A potential hurricane is always just around the corner.

Gayton beach in Walton county is a cool little area. And if you are a resident there are parts of the beach you can park on. I want to say residents can also walk their dogs on the beach. It is on the panhandle Emerald coast so nice beaches and an easy ride inland if there is a hurricane. They also have dangerously good shopping not too far away in Sandestin. Factory outlets stores for everything from Wustof to Northface. It can be touristy but you are far enough away from the redneck riveria PCB. So more upscale tourists but it's Florida so...

Sounds like just about any of the thousands of planned developments will suit you. They are all pretty much the same to me. I would avoid South Florida (palm beach, broward, dade county) like the plague though.

A smaller city/town on the east coast is probably where I would look. Less populated. Southwest Florida is getting very crowded. I grew up in Sarasota it has changed a lot, but you don't have to pay for parking at the beach...yet.
