My buddy and I were talking about radio comms and that we should probably standardize on what we want to use in our immediate “family” circle. I was thinking GMRS would be a good thing for “inner circle” comms as the radios are relatively inexpensive and easy to use, they are compact and would be easy to install in trucks/atvs/utv’s, the GMRS license extends to the whole family use so each of our respective families can use the call signs, no test, and good range. Also repeater use is allowed. Should be able to go 10-20 miles simplex depending on terrain and we could setup a repeater if needed when out camping or wheeling, etc. what ya think? My buddy has a HAM license but I’m not sold on using it on the regular / taking the exam, more just have stuff programmed up for SHTF. He and I will be living about 12 miles apart so we could use GMRS on the regular if we wanted. I have some MURS handhelds for when out camping around camp, convoys of vehicles, and snowboard/ski days.

Thinking of going with some BTECH radios in the trucks and some BTECH HT’s for GMRS if we go that route.
