    Hi all,

Just moved into a new house and are finding some dead spots with the WIFI. Wanted to see what you all recommend for WIFI Mesh systems?

    Thanks!

I have the Orbi. Works great...I had weak signal to my Ring cameras. The main unit connects to your router. I put one extender in the living room and the other in the garage. Whats nice about this setup is that it has its own password and wifi so you can seperate your wireless devices. The app will also do tests and show you your signal strength.

What kind of router do you already have? Some support mesh systems already.

I will second the Orbi system. Works great with no more dead spots.

For the Orbi users - do you have the Performance or the Premium? Quite a difference in cost but wondering if there is a significant speed gain.

Not sure about the Performance/Premium part. What I have is the Orbi AC2200 (CBK40) with a single satellite extender and a wall plug extender. Speed is every bit of the 300 Mbps (speed I pay for) and sometimes faster no matter where I am at in the home. Hope this helps.

I personally replaced everything with stuff from Ubiquiti; with that said, I'm also a nerd (IT specialist, civil service) so it's what I do for a living.

For me it helped immensely; not only is it tons more reliable and provides more signal, but it actually increased my speeds. (The ISP's modem/router would only sustain a max of like 45Mbps. Once I bridged their modem and let Ubiquiti's stuff handle it, now I get something like 65Mbps.)

We installed a Deco mesh in the house within the last month. Huge improvement. Got it from Amazon, cost about 200

I've had an eero system since they first came out. Have eventually updated several of them to the gen 2/Pro units. I also have CAT5e in every room of the house, so I have mine set up to back-haul on the hardwire. The one thing about the eero's I don't like (I don't pay for their subscription service at all) is the overly simple settings/controls. But, the flip side of that is once they are set up, I've really not had to touch them in years.

I have an eero system as well. It’s been working flawlessly really happy with it. It’s super easy and pretty much requires no setup or tweaking. I played around with custom DD-WRT routers running custom configuration software for a couple of years - they require a lot of care and feeding that I got tired of. eero units are set it and forget it.

I setup my parents with the first gen google wifi mesh (large house 3500sqft two story). Not impressed, main puck thats plugged into the modem has fast speeds, but going to the next puck speed drops drastically (from 250 down to about 25 down) signal strength is strong everywhere, but its a crazy speed drop.

I still recommend a single powerful router over mesh if you need fast speed. I have an asus rt-ac5300 in a 2400 sqft two story, no dead spots.

I have an Eero system. It’s been very reliable, but I’m underwhelmed with the speed. I pay for what is supposed to be the fastest connection, but I don’t come close to getting the advertised speeds on any of my devices. Tough to say if it’s Eero or my lying cable provider.

They always add that "*up to ---" at the end to cover their asses. My buddy just went through it, supposed to be "up to 400mbps" with a straight cable run right to the modem he's getting at best 30.

I’d give my left nut for 30. Best I can get is “advertised” 5 Down/0.5 Up DSL. So I’ll never be able to see any sort of degradation that I can attribute to the eero’s. Doing in-network file transfers, though, I don’t see any problems. But, as I said, my eero units are all backhauled on CAT5e through a gigabit switch. So they aren’t using any of their wifi bandwidth to generate the mesh itself, which is the biggest culprit in mesh systems for seeing reduced speeds when connected to the satellite units (at least from my limited understanding of these things).

I started out with a Linksys Velop system. It worked great. The only complaint I had with it was I could not see who was using the most bandwidth on my wi-fi. I have now switched over to the Comcast XFi system with router and pods.

I you are interested, I have the Velop system for sale on Ebay right now. linksys velop tri-band home mesh wifi system AC2200 3-pack | eBay.

I have the Eero Pro, solid system like others have mentioned. As far as speed, I don't have any issues. I get consistent 700mbps with very little packet loss (novice gamer, no interuptions).

I got into the Eero system trying to improve my speeds. I was not getting anywhere close to my “rated” speeds through my ISP. I even swapped out my modem. When that didn’t work out I went back to my original modem and my speeds “magically” got back to where they should be.

I think my ISP had a throttle on my service and swapping modems reset the service. Of course the ISP would never admit it...

I run the Orbi RBR750 with three satellites and have had no issues other than the lack of parental controls. I can max out my internet speed through WIFI (1GB) as needed.

I recently had to replace my router an got the Linksys AC2200. I don't have any of the mesh "pods" but I use my old netgear repeater with it to get wifi throughout the house. Works fine but we have a third world internet provider known as AT&T DSL so speed of the wifi is never the issue.

I use Ubiquiti all day, every day and they seem to be the Shit to me after having tried and used as many different systems on the market as I could.

They have a consumer line called Amplifi which is made to compete with the EERO and Google and ORBI and other consumer level gear and they have been performing for me pretty much every time.

    https://amplifi.com/

    https://amplifi.com/instant

Modern Wireless Meshnet systems now use separate radios for the network traffic and to maintain the Mesh to oversimplify things a lot which enables them to hit high speeds without the slowdowns that the older Mesh stuff used to get where the radios had to either mesh or handle net traffic but could not do both at the same time.
Because of this the older systems led by the Apple gear were 1/2 speed if you needed to mesh via wireless as opposed to wiring them together and you could sure tell the differences when in use.

Anyway the things about the Amplifi that I prefer is there is a lot more control over the setup and configuration over any of the other systems in their range and I can actually understand why and how they are working so that they can be tweaked and monitored for problem both Locally and Remotely right out of the box like a more robust and higher priced commercial level system.
You can also Mesh them wirelessly and/or wired which can be really handy for sure.

You might not need to take advantage of these features and you dont have to either and they claim out of the box to working network in under 2 minutes for these systems but when you do need to go beyond plug and play you can too which is always a welcome option!

I went with the 3 eero system. Also used a cat 8 cable from spectrum modem to eero. Pics are, starting, then cat 8, then eero mesh

I use the Samsung mesh wifi with smartthings. Works extremely well and includes smarthome control through the nodes. I would recommend going for a wifi 6 compatible system as this will be the new standard in a few years

Yeah I am waiting on upgrading a few systems for this to be a real thing that you can buy but as usual it is going slower than I want!

Actually, before that (and I realize most may not be able to do this), if one wants a mesh system, I'd recommend two WAPs (not the Cardi B kind lolz) connected via ethernet backhaul (fancy words for network cable). Wired is almost ALWAYS faster than wireless, and reliable as well.
