I recently bought my 2018 TRD Tundra and now I hear a noise which sounds like it is coming from the rear driver side of vehicle shortly after I begin to drive. Dealer no help - but said it is not a safety concern? Any ideas

It only seems to happen within the first 30 seconds of driving and does not repeat itself, even if I put it back in park. This is my third Tundra but the first to make a noise like this.

It might be the ABS system check

I've never heard it before on my previous Tundras. Does anyone else hear this noise. Wouldn't an ABS system check happen upon start up, not at different times going down the road?

Its the ABS self check. There are quite a few threads on this.

yep. It should only happen at low speeds right after you start

thanks for your responses. The problem for me is I did not hear it when I test drove different trucks with various options. I noticed it for the first time after I filled my truck up the first time, roughly 500 miles on the truck. Shouldn't it have been doing it from the start? And what causes it to do a self check and what is making the noise?

When I bought my 2017 I noticed the same thing. It'd happen the first few hundred feet or so out of my driveway.
By brother in law (not a mechanic) said it was probably the transmission... which freaked me out a bit...

I haven't noticed it for a while... could be one or a combination of a few things.
    1) Usually I just got in the truck and drove. Lately I've been trying to get worse MPG* so i let the truck warmup for a few minutes before I get into it.
    2) I've got 15k mi on it. Maybe it's not as pronounced as when the truck was newer?
    3) I've just gotten used to it and dont notice it any more.

    * just kidding: not "trying" to get worse gas mileage - but I have been starting the engine so the A/C can cool the truck down sooner. It probably runs for 2-5 minutes while I get the kids strapped in and/or fiddle with my phone to pick the music I want to listen to.

I'll play with my driving habits a bit and get back to you.

OMG!! I was just emailing my service advisor about the same issue and could not describe what was going on in regard to this noise. I have a 15 CM recently purchased and was freaked out it was the tranny. I’m sure the dealer will not know about this and try to charge me a butt-loads of $$ to diagnose the issue only to tell me something unrelated and costly. Thank you so much for this wonderful Tundra community!!

The ABS "clunk" something I honestly hadn't noticed until I came across a thread on this forum.

I heard a thump from the front of the truck at around 15mph, but it only happens when I started the truck and take off. I asked the dealer, they said ABS check, no worries. But I also asked on different forums and guys chimed in saying the same thing

I just got my 2019 TRD Sport and I hear/feel the same thing - a slight thud/clunk just after take off. Doesn't matter if the engine is warm or not. Had my foot on the brake one of the times and there was a slight vibration. My dealer told me its the ABS. I hope they're right. And my 2014 TRD Off Road did not have this.

I am a new member and this is my first post. So glad I found this info! I was about to freak out when I kept hearing this exact noise on my new truck. I thought it was the transmission or a brake caliper was sticking. Thankfully there are a lot of smart folks on here that have already figured this out. Appreciate it very much.

    More than a few.....
Old thread but had to chime in here. I just bought a brand new 21 SR5 CM and I noticed this the first day. Always after first start up after shifting out of park. No matter how slow or fast I drove. Many thanks for setting my mind at ease. I talked myself out of buying a F250 so I wouldnt have to deal with problems, I was like, "really toyota? I had to be the 1 out of 1000 guys with an issue out of the box?"

Thanks so much everybody. Me too, just purchased a 2021 TRD Tundra and this noise has been making me sick to my stomach since I brought it home. Two trips to Toyota to diagnose. First trip, no we can’t hear it. Second trip, that’s nothing to be concerned about but couldn’t tell me what it was exactly. This helps a ton, and puts my mind at ease. Thanks again, you guys rock.

    Too many, but not enough....
it happens at 6mph after everytime you start the engine. Try it. drive at 5mph or less for as long as you want and wont hear it. Soon as you hit 6mph, you will hear the clunk.

Only happens once after start up, put into drive and go over 6 mph. Only one abs check per engine cycle.
