Being told that possible overdrive bearing, was coming home from vacation, traveling approximately 65, pushed O/D button to slow down slightly, and lost all the gears, does this sound right, never heard of the o/d bearing. No trouble at all before this. (Correct name is o/d planatary gear)

Not sure about the problem, but if it comes down to repairing/replacing the transmission, I would recommend getting a used 2003-2004 tranny from a yard for about $300 and swapping them out. I had a constant check engine code related to my tranny and this fixed it and gave me a better, smoother, stronger, transmission.

Mine went out at 54,000 miles in 2002.I bought my 2000 tundra TRD access cab new in April 2000.I noticed after a YEAR OR SO that it would shift hard from 1st to 2nd gear.Took it back to dealership and it wouldn't do anything ! After a couple months it did it again going to work. Sped up getting on the interstate and when it went into overdrive it popped and started grinding and no power to the wheels. Dealership came to interstate and picked it up and said the plantary gear came apart and junked the trans. They replaced it with a new trans and has ran great ever since! I now have 381,000 miles on the truck with no trans problems.I would replace the transmission with a low mileage used one.IMO.

Find a used one for sure from a 03-04 and have less than $1,000 into a better unit then what your truck came with.

Not familiar the 2002 4X4 Tundra power train controlling computers. Is it necessary to reprogram the ECU, TCU or PCM (if the later two exist) to successfully swap a 2002 4X4 trans to a 03/04 4X4 trans? Does the 03/04 trans have the same bell housing bolt on pattern to 4.7 motor, and no need to reprogram the computer?

If this is a bolt on no reprogramming trans swap with overdrive still functioning, I'm headed to the junk yard and have it locally rebuilt for less than a remanufactured trans cost from out of state. Lot of bad reports on those reman places. I'll have the later year rebuild laying around to replace the original when it gives from towing appx 5000 lbs several or more times a month. About 114,000 miles, with unburned red fluid, on it now. However long that takes to quit. Thanks guys.

Interesting. You're the first person I've actually seen post about the infamous "planetary gear" issue. Apparently it was a known issue for the 2002's. I'm glad Toyota took care of it for you as they should have.

@Professional Hand Model here is a point of reference for our 02's.

As far as I know its the same unit as our early models just with upgraded internals, don't believe anything needs to be re-flashed should just be a drop and swap.

If it's a definite drop and swap ( from 01 to the upgraded 03 or 04), then it's a no brainer, if I received the news that it needs a remand.

Hi, I’m having a very similar problem as chief 01 Except I didn’t use the button to shift out of overdrive.
on the coldest day since I’ve owned the truck ,I noticed the shift lever was difficult to move but once in position th truck drove normally,I went 20 miles to town and made a couple stops, still the shifter lever was hard to move,
Doing highway speed on the way home I heard a clunk
    And lost power to wheels
Now now the transmission won’t engage in any gear
But makes a little grinding noise sometimes even in Park or neutral.
The park position will engage and hold the truck, and the neutral position is free,
But the other positionsa are free also
Is there anything else this could be,stuck shift solenoid or valve.. or even something electrical?
I’m not too excited about the idea of replacing the tranny

I just acquired a 2002 Tundra that is doing the same as Partycleman. Would like to know what he found out what was wrong with his. I looks like maybe I should be looking for a 03-04 transmission
