I drag a 8500lbs 5er with my double cab. I have no idea what the pin weight or my total load is. It does it fine. I'm not in a hurry. The bed is not squaring.

I see lots of bigger 5ers being hauled with Ecoboost .

My next truck will be a crewmax with a slider hitch.

Until you have actually hauled bumper pulls and 5ers and compared them, you will have no issue being a little over with a 5thwheel.

The brakes comments don't wash. The trailer has its own brakes. A 1 ton dragging a small 5er with no brakes on the trailer is going to be a very bad situation.

In my experience, the main weak link in the Tundra is the rear wheel bearings. I've replaced mine. I don't know if it's the trailer hauling, but just looking at them, they are not heavy duty bearings.

In addition, I'm pretty sure Toyota knows we are gonna over load the truck bed. Why else would they have given us adjustable headlight angle from the cab?

Depends.... The issue is that once you get into a tandem axle travel trailer, they are usually larger to begin with and for the most part weigh more.

Yeah, I was just thinking if you looked at two trailers that were identical other than the number of axles. My parents in law have a ~17 foot (if I recall correctly) Forest River with two axles.

Yeah not sure. Would be interesting to see two exact same trailers. 1 axle then 2, more importantly I think it would depend on where exactly that single or double axle were placed on the trailer. Would be tough to tell for sure.

I really don’t care what anyone says, if I had some serious towing needs I’d go with a 3/4 or 1 ton, nothing against the Tundra, this would apply to any 1/2 ton. The Tundra in my opinion is the best 1/2 ton on the market!

Yep, look at single axle trailers they are pretty small. My current boat with duals weighs in at 5000 lbs. My Ranger with a single axle was 3200. I have not checked the hitch weight but 2 people would struggle to lift the hitch. At one time I could lift the hitch on my Ranger. Easy way to settle this is to go check some specs on TTs.

So what you are telling us is that you tow a 5th wheel TT with your Tundra. Interesting, any chance you have a pic of the set up. If you don't want to post it, due to the possible back lash, could you send me a PM with the pic. I am interested and perplexed at the same time, due to the Tundra weight numbers they have. I tow a 28' TT with my tundra and the wife wants to upgrade to a 5er, but I ran the numbers and they don't work out for the Tundra. I just bought my Tundra 6 months ago, i have no interest in getting a 3/4 ton truck anytime soon. My truck currently sits in the driveway 80% of the year and we only use it to go camping 5-6 times a year.

    Yes.

If you want to tow a 5th wheel, sell the Tundra and get a bigger HD truck.

Exactly this. There's a reason that none of the truck manufacturers offer a gooseneck hitch package for their 1500/150 trucks.

What I'm hearing is a guy who is towing a too-big trailer for his truck, who has zero idea what his real weights are. This is the kind of guy who will end up like this guy one day:

Here is the problem with this video...the 1/2 ton pick up truck in the video is a FORD. The 5er is WAY to big for that truck in the first place. They make 5ers in a resonable size

    It's a 3/4 ton...

And look up just how big an 8500lb fifth wheel actually is. They're not small.

Are you sure...looks like a 1/2 ton, tough to tell on its sider though. I'm sure there has to be a reason why this happened, other than the fact that it's a 5er and a possibly wrong size truck. Guess anything can happen when towing, no matter what you are towing. from a fifth wheel to a row boat.

agreed. not to mention, i'm pretty certain the parameters set by Toyota are based on stock everything. OP mentioned that his intention was to add bags which would beef up the capacity that much more.

Actually air bags will NOT increase any capacity of the truck. They will just help level the truck after the trailer is on the truck.

99/100 times, if you have to ask if you are towing or hauling too much...you are towing or hauling too much

It's not just about keeping yourself safe, it's about keeping everyone else on the road safe too. Just because it can tow or haul a bit over the limit, doesn't make it right and doesn't mean you should.

    Don't do it.

Yep, could gave been a big gust of wind. Looks like maybe Ca so Santa Anna's can be a real problem. In Colorado they have strict laws on transporting mobile homes in high winds for a reason. Last year I saw a large motor home bus on it's side. It slid a 100 yards down the highway and left a trail of metal. Either a wind gust or evasive maneuver or both.
