Doing two oil changes today at the same time.

Gen 1 Tundra, 4.7 Liter motor, which calls for 6.5 quarts with filter change. It hadn't been run for at least a week so I changed the cold oil today. Being a lifted 4x4 it's a dedicated vehicle that I rarely drive. I let it drain for at least 1-2 hours. Oil was black, no issues. Filter with gasket removed. New Mobile 1 filer filled 1/2 way, oil put around the ring for seal, installed.

I filled from 2 partial bottles of full synthetic 5w30 and 1/4 quart of 0w20 (had it on hand for my other car) for cold startup help. I foolishly put a little too much in, and figure I put 6.8 or 6.9 quarts in. Oil pressure at startup went to about the 3/4 mark. Seemed a bit high based on my experience with this and my other similar Tundra. Then it ran from 3/4 mark when cold, down to the 1/4 to 1/2 mark when warmed up and accelerating. These trucks seem to moved between 1/4 to 1/2 when driving them. I ran it, drove it around to get it to operating temps and when it cooled I checked oil levels. It's exactly at the mid-point. I'm wondering now if it was a bit low before. I wish I had paid more careful attention, but I rarely drive it.

I changed two vehicles so there's no way to measure the amount of oil I drained out. It's possible it had been underfilled or low from prior owner, and I didn't check the level before the oil change... The records I have on this relatively new to me truck is that the last oil change was 15 months and only 1,300 miles ago from a commercial oil change shop.

I'll keep a close eye on it. Any thoughts...?

If the engine was fully warmed up & off when you checked level, and it was at or just below the 'full' mark on the dipstick. You're good to go.

I don't check levels with the engine cold.

Sorta what I'm thinking. I drove it for 5-10 minutes after oil change, then let it sit for probably 10 minutes and then checked it multiple times on flat surface, and it's at mid-point. I think it's probably fine, but kicking myself for not being more careful.

You're fine. A lot of guys report using more oil than the book asks for. My truck usually takes a little under 7qts before its right.

I dig those wheels by the way.

Manual states drain and fill is 6.5 quarts.

FSM states ‘Factory Fill’ is 7 quarts. Thats dry fill for a new engine.

Because I start the truck for about 3 seconds after an oil drain to remove the last bits of stuck oil, I can attest its about .5 quart.

Conclusion: 7 quarts and the line at the top dimple on the dip stick equals Golden Hands Thumbs Up!

I do 7 qts everytime on my 05. Always drain when warm and give plenty of time to drain. New toyota filter. This puts me just barely over the full mark. Don't want a partial qt sitting around and a little extra won't hurt

My oil pressure gauge varies quite a bit. From near half at startup and under load to near 1/4 at low rpm cruising. I've never seen it at 3/4. Maybe under load when cold, but I like my truck too much to do that to her.

I'm glad I'm not alone here. I've tried 6.5-6.8 quarts and it doesn't get me to the full mark. I'll do 7 going forward.

6.5qt brings my dipstick to the middle mark, 7qt to the full mark. It is kind of a PITA to store 1/2 quart so the last oil change I put all 7qt in. Oil pressure seems to be the same and it is always right at the full mark.

Drain the oil and then start the truck empty with the train plug out?

Drain. Put plug back it (old oil filter hasn’t been removed yet). Start truck for 3 seconds. Remove plug and 1/2 quart comes out.

Do not recommend. Used to do my early Hand Model Cars this way, too. Dangerous!
