Anyone got one on their first gen, and how the heck did you mount it to the roof? Thinking it might be a nice addition to my Amazon list for Christmas. Just don't want to drill holes in the body to mount them if at all possible. Also, any recommendations on decent brands that won't blow the budget? Thanks in advance - John

I looked into this briefly but decided against it due to the way they look mounted on the roof above the windshield.

My main reason for not doing this was like you. Didn't want drill holes in the roof.

Plus our trucks are much more rounded than say a jeep. <- Which looks much better with a roof bar.

I have a magnet LED Cube that has a swivel head on it which can be removed or added in less that 30 seconds.

Stick with me guys and I’ll take you places.

Having had some bigger trucks, I'm fond of the old skool cab lights, but punching holes in the body is crossing the Rubicon.

I don't have any pictures unfortunately, but we had a '79 F150 RCSB. Two tone green originally, repainted with just a green.

It had the amber cab lights. It looked good with those, but it also "fit" the truck as it was shaped like a rounded brick. Cab lights, and roof light bars don't really "fit" our trucks.

Now, if you had/have a visor on your truck like @lsaami I can totally see it rocking cab lights, or visor lights at that point? On the bare cab, not so much.

This is just my two cents. Maybe if we had some photographs to help us ID parts/styles....

Edit: spelling. Changed point from pointing.

Yeah, I finally got to speak to a Chevy owner this evening that had one of these setups...and it is a pain in the ass to do, plus it is noisy with the wind....So, I'm thinking this idea is shut down due to advice and common sense.

Good call. Anytime you mount something on top the noise becomes a huge factor. I bought a LED Milwaukee Cube Light that has a strong magnet. The light pad swivels for directional use. Can be used in other situations, as well. Quickly remove and install when off road at your discretion.

Another thing you don't hear a lot about is the glare. With roof mount lights you can get glare on the windshield. There were two guys on TS forum who found that out.

There are easier and less intrusive places to put lights. The bumper is a pretty perfect location. To be really honest unless you're running the Baja 500 at night there isn't much need for that kind of lighting.

Was gonna be for looks/fun and lighting up some of the West Texas back roads if needed. Bucket list would be a roll bar in the back with KC Daylighters like Marty's Yota in BTTF.

To help round out the look you may need one of these. :thumbsup:I have one, amd this is the same one as mine. It saved me from totalling my truck when I ran off the road in iced over conditions.

Just my opinion... but I think the 50" light bars are passe, like yesterday. I took the 50 incher off my Jeep and chucked in the scrap pile, going back to roundies for that. Just added a slim 14 incher to the bull bar on the Tundra. It's discreet and does the job well.

Im with him, ditching the 50" curved on my tacoma and.going back to round lights in a cage. Every domestic mall crawler in the country ruined the look even if it does function as well. Previous i ran 5, 7" rounds (before LEDs were available), these older trucks just look so much better with that set up.

I will second everyone's notes about using other light options first. For 90% of the time the bumper lights everything up plenty, the added height does however seem to help eliminate shadows though and helps identify holes and crevasse at speed in dark when offroad.

Appreciate it. Its been parked almost 4 years since getting my Tundra, kinda sad and really need to give it the love it deserves. Really needs some Boost or a swap to be as fun as it should be

Definitely more than tempted to LT the Tundra seeing how much more room there is to work with doing cage and all. First I need a big as shop outside the city though.

None will be forth coming of the set up that I have as its just a Milwaukee Light Cube (7”x7”) with a battery. The magnet strength is decent and the LED Pad swivels and articulates.

Ironically, I saw some magnetic mounts on the Rigid Site? Either there or another site called Diode Dynamics. The little 3”x3” cubes mount up on magnetized pedestals. Looks like a cool set up with quick clip electric connectors for when you really need them for ‘off road use’. When not needed just store them away. Solves the permanent mounting/clip problem many have had.
