Hey all, about to put blacked out tail lights on the truck. Wanting to do the third brake light but understand that replacing it is a pita. What are my options to black out the third brake light without replacing it? Would a shop just tint the lens for me? Is there a blacked out lens out there for sale? Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't think it would be hard to just buy a piece of tinted wrap and throw it on there. It's not like a window where the tiny bubbles will drive you crazy if you get one or two.

You can buy just the clear or tinted lens at klearz.com. Click on the clear lens, they have two types of tinted ones. The lens comes off with just four screws on the face of the lens. 5 minute install.

Thought about that but when I go to the website I don’t see a tinted option. May have to just reach out to them and see if they still make it. Think it would be cheaper to tint? F0C1BC13-3148-4145-9861-A4C4BD90F4E4.jpg

Dang it! Well it says they can do tinted. If you’re inclined, @jstyle had a good idea to wrap it. It’s a pretty flat piece, couple youtubes and you should get it done yourself nicely.

If a shop wraps it, should be inexpensive, especially if you bring the piece to them.

WOW, that was a fast response..

    Hi,
We should have them back in January. Our franchise Klearz PA will be producing them.
I'd suggest getting in touch with them or keeping an eye on their website KlearzPA.com (klearz.pa@gmail.com)
    Thanks

    Tina

    Klearz.com

So KlearzPA.com doesn't have them on their website, so I emailed them the same question..

You could also just take the lens off (4 screws) and spray it with lens tint in a rattle can. VHT nightshades or Rust-oleum lens tint are cheap alternatives...

Anyone have any experience with VHT Nightshades? Pretty much just spray and then clear coat?

The rust-oleum brand has clear mixed in already. Just 2 or 3 light coats does the trick. The only thing I will warn you about is each coat you add makes the lens darker and there is no going back. I would suggest putting the lens back on the truck after each coat dries and make sure the light shines through to your liking. If not you will just end up with a blacked out piece of plastic that no light shines through...

You want to do very light coats, 10 minutes apart. The VHT is pretty good. Stop when it’s dark enough to your liking. Then clear coat. You can use duplicolor clear, but it won’t last. A 2k clear is your best bet, available at an automotive paint shop, or Amazon.

thanks all, I’ll let you all know which way I go and will post an updated. I reached out to my shop to see what they’d charge to tint. Depending on what they say, I may go this route.

    So the response from KlearzPA.com.

    Hello!

We are actually in the process of putting them back into production.
Once we get some stock built up they will be posted back on the site.
Were hoping within the next few weeks!
We can give you a follow up when we are ready for some to be shipped!
    Thank you!

I wonder if all they do is spray a clear lens with tint, or if it is molded into the plastic?
    I guess I can ask.

I'm thinking spraying ourselves with a clearcoat would be a good option.

If we screw it up, the part is only $12 plus shipping..

Thank you! I replaced the tail lights last night, they look sweet. This’ll be the last step. I also broke the clips on the side of the tail light when I was taking out the old ones. It’s fragile, especially in the cold. I just ordered four more. Just FYI, in case anyone else does it, part numbers below.4C34ED28-713D-4E3E-93D2-6C2E75EFA90B.jpgDB0EEAF2-2F80-45CB-8AC2-105B252BC378.jpgE1405EFD-4EA4-4F13-B5A4-35B94093E806.jpg 701AAF0F-036D-48DF-A5CF-BFF1A1192381.jpg

I haven’t used this product, but I’ve done similar projects. I would paint the inside of the lens. There’s no need for clear coat after that and the finish on the outside remains factory.

    Just a heads up..

    Got 1 more email today.

    Hi,
The tundra 3rd brake light is back in production, you can go ahead and order using this link.
It might take a week or 2 for new orders to ship out
    http://klearzpa.com/tundra3rd

    Thanks
    Tina

I was curious to the difference in smoked and light smoked and found this on their website.

    Klearz - FAQ (klearzpa.com)

What is the difference between light smoked and smoked lenses?
    We have 5 standard colors.
Clear, light smoked, smoked, white and frosted.
Our smoked color is a medium/dark tint, the light smoked is pretty light.
The frosted is a lighter version of the white lenses.
The tint can vary a bit depending on the lens thickness but for the most part the colors are pretty close to the pictures.

$100 is pretty steep for a piece of plastic, but I do like that the color is molded in and not a film.
Still not sure if it is worth the money.
I've lived with my stock lens for 6 years...:D

I just ordered the light smoked a week ago. I did not want to go through dropping the headliner to install a 3rd break light assembly. This was the only company that I found that only does the lens. I’ll definitely post some pics for you when it comes in.
