My 2015 just had the drivers side valves, springs and lifters replaced. THANKFULLY still under Toyota CPO warranty otherwise about $5200. Maint manager said there was a bad lifter and busted his ass to make sure it was still covered as I was about 2 weeks past but documented as far back as 1 year ago.
1795 with 82k and always Mobil 1, no towing or anything other than intermittent ‘spirited driving’. Always happened when below 20F and sitting for more than 24hrs. Sporadically when warmer.
    Happy New year

Same exact thing with my 2005. Toyota couldn't figure it out. I was at a Chevy mechanic's house & mentioned it. We went outside and he had me put it in gear, brake and gas it at the same time, and he diagnosed it in his driveway.

I run Motul eco-lite 0W-20 in mine. No ticking noises at all. Started using it a couple years ago in wife’s Pilot. Quieted down that motor quite a bit. Her Pilot made more noise with Mobil1.

5 liter jug of the Motul is about $35 on Amazon.

I know this is an old thread but just incase anyone is still concerned about the famous tundra diesel knock i wanted to show them a known good new stock 5.7 sound to compare and to put anyone else at ease. This engine sounds like this from the factory from 0 miles to currently 3k miles, 0w20 as well as 5w30. I performed extensive research and testing to confirm this behavior. I really hope this helps anyone else searching for answers. Thanks

Loud and clanky just like mine lol.

I did have an odd occurrence recently though, dealership changed the oil and then the truck had to sit for 10 days immediately after, waiting on a part un-related to the engine. Upon start up I got white smoke that smelled like it was burning oil, stank bad. Level and everything was perfect, it was NOT condensation. Hasn't done it again since then though shrug......

Possibly the plastic oil filter housing? Im considering the aluminum housing upgrade to avoid breaking it in the future if it becomes brittle with age.

Thanks for the baseline to compare Sid,
You jinxed me though! Mine is starting to do it again and I think me and my service manager will have a sit-down. He did right by me last time so we shall see!!

    Hi friends
    I'm from saudi arabia
    My car is a Landcruiser 2016 with a 5.7 engine , 40k kilometres
I use 10-40 oil and sometimes 15-40 because the temperature is 50 degrees Celsius here, and with this I have the same engine sound as yours
    thank you
'Cause now I know I'm not the only one who's worried about this engine sound

I think alot of these noises are caused by people not doing a proper "break-in" on new engines.

What's your definition of proper break in? Mine has the diesel-like sound at idle when warm (I didn't watch the videos to see if that's the same sound others are hearing) and I broke mine in exactly as Toyota recommends.

Im just sayin there could be a correlation between 3uz noises and the number of tundra owners, who also happen to be Motorsports enthusiasts. I just assume mine is a bit scarred from all the trips to redline and back

I wish I had taken videos, but mine ticked and sounded like a diesel with Mobil1 oil. It went away with Amsoil.

    Welp, see ya later!

Normal sound for these engines. Since 2015 till now still sounds the same. I run 0-30 mobil one. Truck runs great no issues
