Hey all, I have an 02 TRD with about 190k. I was having some serpentine belt issues and so decided to to replace tensioner and check other components. Timing belt and water pump look fine visually. However, during my inspection I noticed my crank pulley was 3/8" toward the block when compared to the fan and other accessories. I thought I must be mistaken and so installed the new belt and turned the engine. The belt immediately slipped off at the crank. Is it even possible for this pulley to move aft? And what are some possible remedies?

    Thanks

Time for a new crank pulley.

The rubber isolator fails and the pulley slips over.

Yeah. Inspect. Take pics. Post them. Probably pulley separations.

Ouch... hopefully you caught it before it damaged any engine surfaces. You may need a replacement lower timing cover, though..

Thanks for pics in the article. I realized your HB looked just like mine.

Yeah there is separation. Hope your Oil Pump Housing didn’t get eaten into. Looks like you have a Newer Style Tensioner. I just installed one myself when doing Timing Belt Change. Wonder if someone used a strap to hold the HB (instead of a puller) in order to remove it during the last TB Change?

Been there, done that and got the T shirt. Mine ate thru the timing cover and started to chew through the crankshaft sensor mounting point. DO NOT drive that vehicle! I ordered a new harmonic balancer thru RockAuto and if you need a new timing cover, get the OEM from Toyota. Of course, you will need a tool to remove the harmonic balancer.
