Fair for the seller is what he is asking for it. We all know that rarely happens though. But in all reality what's fair is very subjective. I might think $15k is fair but as you see from the post above some think 13,500 is fair...

...Decide what is the absolute highest amount you'll pay for it and then offer $2 grand less for negotiation purposes. Allows you to try for a good deal and allows the seller to get more money out of you which is fair for him.

That’s why I said $13500 see what they say. They might be firm at $16900. If it’s a dealer I wouldn’t be afraid of offending them. Like you said offering thousands under what you want to pay starts the negotiation.

The above advise is spot on, especially if you are willing to spend $15k. Over a couple grand less and work from there.

    Hopefully it works out

Mine was about 17K and is a 2015 with 40 thousand miles from a dealer who was the only owner if that gives you any perspective.

Yours looks like a higher optioned truck but with a lot more miles and older skin.
It is in the best color too!

And yes there are not many of us out there with Regular Cab Trucks of this vintage so it is tough to compare the prices for sure.
As always they are worth whatever someone is willing to pay for them and some sellers are in a hurry and others are not so YMMV of course.

Kinda depends on your zip coda a bit, being a single cab the seller is somewhat limited as far as market potential. I’m pretty certain you can take it away for 13,200.00 if not keep looking. More trucks than buyers out there. I bought mine for a price which everyone said wouldn’t ever happen, plus I financed it at zero % for 60. You just have to be willing to walk away from several sellers and use their offers against your next victim. Basically get a detailed offer on paper and make the next guy beat it. Do that about 8 or 9 times and you will find the true rock bottom. Good luck with your purchase!

There are a lot other variables:
    Mileage for year seem reasonable.
    Any accidents?
What is condition of truck - rust, interior, maintenance records?

Have you inspected the truck in person?

If you are paying cash. I would put 11k in the left pocket and 2k in the right pocket, drop the 11k on the table and negotiate from there knowing that you have 2k to play with. anything over that 2k buffer, walk away.

When i purchased my 2020 Sport I traded in my 13 Tacoma w/60k miles (slightly Modified tastefully). they gave be 25K for my trade in based on the fact that i told them i would finance through Toyota. Now, that means the dealer gets a kick back based on the % of finance rate from Toyota and thats what would make up the difference of them giving me the 25K for my trade in. But what they didn't know is that I wa actually going to pay cash when I picked up my truck, I brought them cash 25K for the new truck. They had a look on there face like i was a really bad person. They originally said the deal was off, but then they came back and said ok, but they weren't happy with the shadiness that i just pulled on them. I laughed at them, hopped in my truck and drove away with a big smile.

I would be pissed if I was them too. You backed out on your word, which speaks volumes that you are so proud of it.

If I was you dealer or salesman, I would have walked away and denied the deal.

We came to an agreement with our dealer to give us a portion of the kickback if we financed and kept the loan open for the minimum timeframe (we paid a huge lump on it, kept it open for 3 months). The interest was offset by the kickback and we ended up $600 ahead and in the end, we had a loan for 3 months and paid it off entirely. I wasn't worried about credit score as we have a perfect score and no other open loans.

I would be concerned about the frame since it's been in Massachusetts with all the salt during the winter. Why did it fail inspection and go to auction? But my main concern would be the structure damage since it was in a accident.
    Carefully look that truck over.

That may work with a new vehicle but that doesnt work with a used one. Much less on a very desirable truck.

But it has been in a accident, failed a prior inspection. Wouldn't that help with some negotiations?

I agree, this strategy doesn't work on a used vehicle

Yes of course. It’s all about what’s available in that area that is comparable.

Where did you get this extra information about the truck?
The details clearly matter and if the O.P. did not think so......?

Be wise, used trucks have a lot of profit in the selling price. Ask any car sales person they will tell you the truth is they get much more commission on used sales due to the higher revenue the sale generates for the dealer.

That would work with private party. Problem with that is it’s a dealer he’s dealing with and they can’t take “cash”. I just went through this. I walked in with 10k cash and the finance guy said he couldn’t touch my money. Anything over 2k is reported and 10k has to be investigated it’s a lot of work for them at that point. You can come in with an 11k cashiers check and 2k you’re willing to put on a credit card you can pay off with your own cash.
The days of laundering money through purchasing vehicles is done. The money has to be verified and traciable if you’re going through a dealer.

I have just been schooled. I honestly did not know that about used dealers. I can't remember the last time I bought a used vehicle from a dealer. I know they did it for me at the new car dealer, i guess there are different regulations for used auto dealers. It all makes sense though.

This varies from store to store, you can most definitely purchase a car with cold hard cash. Whether or not they accept it is up to them.

Agreed Cash is still King and this truck is not at a Brand Dealer either but just a used car lot, there is no reason they would not take cash.
