budget wise, an aimpoint pro cannot be beat.

eotech is also a good option if you need a bigger window.

i run aimpoint micro t1 and t2s for my lighter rifles and scar 17. my home defense go-to rifle has both a red dot leupold delta point pro and lvpo usoptics 1-8. i have the xps3 on my benelli.

holosun is a chicom company. theyre not in the running for me or anyone i shoot with.

CAG (Delta Force) has been running romeo4ts for awhile as have other SOF units including 22SAS. they can choose whatever they want and went with sig and aimpoint.

My 416 has an eotech pictured above. My other has a Sig Romeo4T. Both work if you know what you’re doing.

Gonna be purchasing a eotech with a unity riser and magnifier this week to run with NV. It will be my new night gun.

I continue to purge the less desirable in the process of distilling my collection of long rifles down to what I really like, this has left me with a small surplus of optics I no longer need. Leupold, Aimpoint and EOTech are the only ones I am keeping - everything else will be under new management soon.

    Iron sights?

Does anyone bother to learn how to use them?

I may be old, but I can still see the front sight crystal clear and hit a slightly fuzzy target at a distance or close-in with iron sights. Get really good with your iron sights & flip up iron sights, analog tech for when electronic tech fails.

Sometimes iron sights are all you have.................................................................
    AR-110c.jpg

I AR'd my M14... now I can use some of the best BUIS ever made with Tritium front and rear.

When they aren’t good enough for the Marines then who needs em? (sarcasm)

Yes they are still used and people still have to qualify with them.

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
My “go to” carbine is a Knights Armament Co SR-15 and it’s currently wearing a Nightforce NXS 1-4X24 with the FC-3G reticle in a Nightforce Uni-Mount. I’d like more magnification at some point, but can’t complain about the performance of the little Nightforce. It gets hits out to a smidge over 550 yards on the first round using the BDC with 77gr SMK hand loads. At least when I hold my end of the bargain. Then turn it down to 1X and hose down close targets almost as fast as a red dot.

I am also an Aimpoint fan, have an old as balls Comp M3 mounted on my Colt M4A1 SOCOM II. Although I don’t shoot that carbine much anymore since it’s an original factory roll marked M4A1 with the DD RIS II rail from the factory and the M4A1 contour barrel. That damn thing is a hammer though, with a 3.5-15X50 NF on top for testing I’ve run sub 1” 10 shot groups at 100 yards with it. Stellar results for a chrome lined barrel with a generous NATO spec chamber.

Well... Im late to this party... and since you already chose your optic.. I will just throw in my .02

EoTech is nice... my son runs one and it is VERY fast...

I loved the MRO ( post 92K sn) light weight/ Battery life measured in YEARS, but it did NOT play well with my astigmatism ( being the old bastard I am)

LPVO's seem to be the best of both worlds for most shooters... PID of the target is probably one of the most crucial aspects of using the rifle...

BUIS are no longer something I can use..they are a big fuzzy blob now for me...

That said... you made a good choice.... Buy Once/ Cry Once.. chasing low budget optics is poor choice... if it gets dropped and breaks cause it is Range toy quality... you will be buying again...plus it may be down when you need it most.

So just my two cents after spending the last 15 years in a profession where your firearm has to go bang every time because odds are good that if you need the bangstick, that means that someone's shooting back. I've been on security details for three POTUS, 2 VPOTUS, 3 AGs and too many high profile dignitary and VIP security operations to count. Been deployed to lovely areas like Ferguson and have seen the some of the worst of what men can do to one another. I have been fortunate to train with FBI's HRT, SEALs, Germany's GSG9 and some guys here and there that only identify as "DOD." Most of these were luck of the draw, not because my unit was particularly high speed, mind you.

I choose optics the way I choose firearms, look to the guys who spend their time on the two-way ranges around the world and see what they choose as a starting point. My firearms, although I enjoy shooting, are around in case the lives of people I care about are on the line. If you're just looking to plink targets, then almost anything on the market can work for you.

With that "intro" I have Aimpoint micro T2s on my 16" and 12.5" ARs. From the end of the barrel out to 300 yards (or farther if your eyes are better than mine), you can't beat it for fast, accurate rounds on target. Others feel the same with the Eotech as it was their first and they trained on it relentlessly. I like that when shooting a red dot properly, both eyes open, focused on the target not the dot, the Aimpoint becomes almost invisible. The Eotech's thicker frame is not ideal for me. (All that changes if we're talking about using NVGs though as the Eotech is king there).

Anyway, I was sold on the Aimpoint after watching a Larry Vickers video that was touting the toughness of Daniel Defense ARs. The torture test included dropping it from a helicopter, running over it with a truck, burying it, shooting it with a shotgun, dropping it in water. The DD did well but the Aimpoint micro worked, and worked and worked, even when the glass got broken after blowing up something next to it I think. After each "test" that just made me cringe, Vickers would pick up the rifle, clear the chamber and hit steel with the Aimpoint sight.

I've been in desert heat, winter freeze and everything in between, and never had an Aimpoint fail. I enjoy taking people out to the Army's 300 meter pop up range to show how amazing, and easy, the red dot sights are to use from 50 meters out to the 300 mark. With a 50 yard zero, it is as close to "put the dot where you want the bullet to go" as it gets. At CQB distances, you might have to account for the distance the dot is above the barrel if you need to hit a tiny area (think hostage's head obscuring all but a third of the bad guy's face). At 300 meters, depending on your ammo, you might have to aim at the head to get a center mass shot, but it's instinctive for those that don't have the luxury of shooting thousands of rounds a week. If you've shot at all, you can be hitting a two liter soda bottle at 200 yards almost immediately. (when the bottles are water filled and you hit it with a nice hollow point HD round, the results are a crowd pleaser, just saying, nice change from shooting steel or paper all the time).

In today's climate, something's going to give and when the zombies come, I know that the T2 is going to work when I can't afford to have it fail.

Update to the current state of optics in my stable:

    A3C1841D-111E-4BF6-8F13-A5D5A519D1FB.jpg

    Simple meat and potatoes setup:

Knights Armament Co. SR-15 E3 Mod 2 carbine.

    Vickers combat application sling.

Aimpoint Comp M5 on a Geissele Super Precision lower 1/3 cowitness mount.

Cloud Defensive Optimized Weapon Light (OWL).

Only change to the carbine is the addition of a Surefire closed tune Warcomp in place of the KAC 3 prong flash hider because I like the balance of muzzle control and flash mitigation without excessive blast the Surefire offers.

I really like the Trijicon MRO HD; was an EOTECh lover; T2 great as well- sold on the Triji now. One area of concern is the coating on the glass may have a compromising effect. Personally I find is a challenge to stay current on developing technologies. My primary use is close quarters. As a side note- I have some very experienced brothers that say good things about the budget friendly HOLOSUN optics- Seems a good way to go if you have many AR's to outfit.

I hadn't heard of them before and we had some of my unit's rifles start coming back from p.m. from Quantico with the (then) new Geissele rails and these lights. I beat on the thing every time we had training just to see if it would break and when they seemed to hold up really well, I thought it was a good to go from both a price and operating/not failing standpoint.

Trying the best I can to stay away from Chinese products and often means spending more on American made but it's worth it on principal to me.

check them out, they offer far superior throw and are more solid. i ran inforce for awhile and made the cutover prob 4-5 years ago. these companies are game changers that even surefire cannot compete with.

downside is they are about 3x the price of the inforce.

@rocsteady the MRO is made in the USA, EOTECH same, Aimpoint- Sweden? I steer clear of made in China; corporations make it challenging with their "shell game" and chasing best profit. I did buy some COVID tests though.

Not to keep highjacking the thread with light stuff but one thing to consider as well is there is a point where, for me, it's too bright. If I'm using a 16" gun to hunt hogs or something outside in a rural area, I might want to see 200 yards BUT if I have that light on my HD gun and I illuminate a light colored wall in front of me with that same 10,000 candle power light that could guide the space shuttle back to landing, I am going to blind myself. If you've ever done that in a very dark room or house or whatever, it's often a while before your vision comes back to anything resembling normal. Just another reason I like the inforce that I have, plenty bright enough for around the house and yard where I live but not so bright that I blind myself when I try to use it indoors (like during the Sandy Storm in Staten Island; ask me how I know). It got sketchy fast when NYPD couldn't get to parts of the five boroughs.

i think he was talking about holosun. that is a 100% chicom product which stole IP from American companies.

its an AR thread so id think this convo is satisfactory.

yeah modlite and cloud make two diff heads, one is a long throw and one is a general use. i have a long throw on my property rifle and short throw wide beam on my home rifle.

the big thing for me was the candela, or more accurately, maximum beam candlepower, the ability to overpower other weapon lights, car headlights, etc. that way i could see them and even if they had their high beams on, my light was still pushing through.

Ah, very cool indeed. Good idea to have different "modes" on different weapons for different purposes. You're one step ahead of me. I watched the comparo video last night and you're 100% right, the modlite is really noticeably better.
    p.s. the eagle is great
