    Hi

I have a scraping noise on my 2005 Toyota Tundra Double cab. I think it is coming from the rear but not sure where. I could hear it as I spin the wheel with my hand. I took the drum covers out on both wheels and still makes the same scraping noise. There are no vibrations when I drive. It is more of a roaring noise when I'm in the truck. Please check out the video of the sound:

Also I checked the carrier bearing and was wondering if a slight movement is normal. Here is the video of it. The play on it seemed normal to me. here is the video

Hard to hear, your video is mostly a low roaring noise.

Since you already pulled the drums with no change in noise. Did you remove fill plug and check fluid level already?

Yeah. I was wondering if that low roaring noise is normal. I recently changed the differential oil and the breather vent. Just some fine sand like shaving on the drain plug. I think this is normal. Thanks for the input.

Is it noisy on the road?

Yeah. It is a low roaring noise when driving. I just bought the 2005 tundra double cab and not sure how it sounds regularly. To me it sounds loud and it sounds like it is coming from the rear.

Ah. If it's noisy like that you may possibly have a bearing problem.

Is it coming from the left, right or center?

That is what I thought (maybe a wheel bearing), but there are no movements on the wheels. Also I took an Infrared gun to both the rear hub and the temperature are the same on both sides. I also checked the temperature for the pinion bearing and all seemed normal. Nothing too high of a temperature. I'm not able to tell if it is coming from any one side, it seemed to be pretty even on the sound and the sound doesn't change when the truck turns left or right.

Have to pull axles to check their bearings for 'grittyness' or being overly loose. They may not have enough play to feel by hand when installed.

If those feel good, then you can spin the pinion by hand with the axles out and see of that feels obviously bad. If it doesn't then it's time to pull the 3rd to inspect it closer.

Having had a bad rear driver side wheel bearing for about 6 years I can say it didn’t sound like that. Noise would start at around 20mph and roll through the cab in intermittent fashion.

Not saying this isn’t a bad wheel bearing in your case.

When did this noise begin? Before or after diff oil change? What oil you using?

The noise was there since I bought the truck a month ago. I changed the diff oil hoping it would solve it. I used Lucas 75w-90 and friction modifier. When I open the diff oil fill nut, I heard air coming out to relieve the pressure. That is when I realized the breather vent was clogged. I got a new breather vent for the differential and now it is good. The noise is the same before and after I changed out the differential oil.

I thought is was the rear bearing but can't tell which wheel. Checked the play and temperature of the rear wheels and seemed to have no issues. I can hear the low roar when I hand spin it. In the car, I can hear it about 10 mph as the car starts moving.

    Thanks for everyone's input.

Ok. So I changed out the rear right wheel bearing and it was grinding so it needed to be changed. But the same noise is still there.

I know it is not the wheel bearing because I jacked up the rear tires (2wd) and put the truck in Parked. So when I rotate the tires, only the wheels spinned and not the drive shaft. There was no noise. So that tells me the wheel bearing is good.

The noise only comes when the drive shaft spins. So I thought it might be the center bearing. Today, I took the propeller shaft off and rotated the center bearing attached to the intermediate shaft connected to the transmission. There was no sound. So the center bearing was good and the u-joints were all good. With the propeller shaft removed, I rotated the differential and the same sound as the video is there. So the sound seemed to be coming from the differential. Is it a pinion bearing? Am I checking everything correctly? Thanks, any help will be appreciated.,

Sounds like you’ve identified it as the Pinion Bearing.

Thanks. So what are my options? Is it easy to change the pinion bearing? Or do I have to just get a whole new differential carrier? Thanks.

You can replace just the bearing but you'll likely need to pull the 3rd member anyway to press the bearing back in. However just throwing a bearing in it doesn't mean it'll fix all your problems since it could have done more damage other places.

In the end it may just be less of a headache to throw a new unit in.

    Hi Festerw
Thank you so much for this info. So how does this work? Do they send me a new differential carrier and I send my old one to them? Also how can I know my gear ratio? Thanks

I am considering replacing the whole carrier. What is the process for that and how can I do? Do I remove the differential carrier and ship it to someone to rebuild or just buy a new one from somewhere? Any idea what kind or size of differential carrier I'm looking for in a 2005 Toyota Tundra Double Cab 2wd? Thanks
    Thanks

Usually when I see threads that say "help" I only see questions with little action from the OP. Great to see you're hands on and I applaud your trouble shooting and diagnosis so far, good work.
    :hattip:

There is a great man who goes by the name of "Zuk" who can rebuild your carrier. You can find him if you google his name and differential, he mainly does Toyota.

You can drop the 3rd member and have any transmission shop do the work. Hard to say what parts you would need for this but Just Differentials is a good website to check for quality bearing and shim kits.

Good news with 2wd is it doesn't matter a whole lot what gear ratio you go with in the 3.55-4.10 range. The quick and dirty way is described here and if you're a little off it's not a huge deal.

    https://www.chevyhardcore.com/news/whats-gear-ratio-find-out/

What @Darkness says is true any shop can do the work but if you're counting on it not being down, basically East Coast will send you a new one, you box up your old one and send it back to them.

That sounds like a nice program, I didn't know they did trades that way.

Thanks for all the info. I'll contact them and see.

Also fyi - the pinion bearing had no play in it, it was just griding noise.

    Appreciate all the help.
