Snagged the driver side visor hinge out of this thing. Tired of mine hanging down 1-2".

I'll probably end up painting it, as it's a different color to my interior.

Grabbed the center bumper trim for the 03-06 front end and gray steering wheel radio control switch from a Sienna (matching green LEDs). Found a local parting out an 05 4runner limited and got everything needed so I can add radio controls.

Just not sure if I should use the leather wheel or not. I like how easy the plastic is to keep clean.

Did you really add 12 circuits?
If so, I'm curious what they all are.

I only asked because you had fuses in all the slots.
I have a much smaller version of that fuse block in the 911 and I don't keep a fuse in the open circuit.

Drivers side leaf, frame overlap area now...

I have the exact same issue on my 2005 DC. Not a speck of rust anywhere else on the frame, i spent some time underneath before buying a year ago and sometime this summer I was under it doing fluids and noticed the delamination issue of the overlap. I'm really worried its going to cause it to snap eventually. I cleaned it up with a wire wheel to get all the loose stuff off and hit it with Rustoleum Rust Converter. Unfortunately I don't think it's helping and needs a better solution. So now I need to go out and grind off what I put on, and I guess POR-15? Not sure what the consensus is with this area of treatment. Plus the gas tank blocks most of the access on the driver side. Either drop the tank, or remove the bed for proper access and mitigation.

Also the previous owner had it treated by the dealership twice with their frame coating solution. Its starting to flake off, so I'll be spending a lot of time scraping that off as well and then doing Fluid Film over the whole frame I think. Anyone know of issues of putting FF or similar product over POR-15 (I'll apply the POR only in the problem areas, not the entire frame).

As someone with the same delam in the stiffener as pointed out here (with other goodies along these pages thanks to @N84434)

I've pulled the bed, but have not dropped the gas tank. My gut instinct says that both would yield the best access to this area.

This is fantastic news for me too. After seeing @FirstGenVol and @Tundra2 pictures and I have the same problem that I noticed after buying it (after I thought I had inspected it thoroughly):frusty:. Definitely added to the, "will do" list, because I bought this baby with 140K on it from the original owner here in VA. I've spent a lot upgrading it with the intent to keep it to 300K at least. This gives me hope. I had no idea it was a stiffener that can be replaced.

Any idea if this is something a dealer would do, or is this something a fabricator would have to do? Can you buy the stiffener?

Also, woke up a little early to pull one side of the Cams back out to peel the sticker off of it.
    20201230_120245.jpg

It probably doesn't matter, but I was thinking while commuting last night that the paper based sticker may draw, and hold moisture. Best to remove it, and be safe.

If toyota had used a plastic based sticker I would have left it.

I doubt a dealer would do this, and I have no idea if you can buy that independently.

I'm sure if we could figure what kind of hokey ass name toyota calls it then we could pull up an exploded parts diagram.

When the time comes for me to do this job, I was just going to see what @N84434 would charge to make a set. That is TOTALLY up to him.

I would like to make one, but I do not have the metal working tools on premises to do that level of work.

I would love nothing more than to send some money to one of our best contributing members for a service.

Absolutely agree. If he would decide to do so, I would gladly support his skillset with my wallet. I don't have the skillset let alone the tools to make it happen myself.

I did a quick google search for and exploded frame diagram and it doesn't seem to be included. I guess its considered part of the frame and not replaceable by Toyota. But it seems silly that this piece couldn't be removed and replaced for a fraction of the cost of replacing an entire frame, dealing with the recalls etc.

Final clear coat on the top side tomorrow, when Shame Garage is warmer, but I’m very happy with the results so far. I didn’t buy a 5th matching wheel for the spare because I didn’t want to put it in the rust hole, but now I feel better about the idea.

    58C91EB8-1D87-4F0E-8229-4536D57F755A.jpg

The immediate focus was on the spare tire holder space. 2021 will bring more attention to the rest of the areas. I hear @Tundra2 is renting his Nerve Tent out on the weekends.

I also got all the Noico 80mil on the doors. I gave up and spent some time with the dog instead of putting any on the back panel. Tomorrow I will get the 315mil installed over the 80.

Monday it gets dropped off for the roof sanding and coating. Gotta have it drivable by then.

Oh, also sanded and hit the rusty (driver side only) door parts behind the weather stripping with a couple coats of Rust Reformer. Cleaned those pieces up too. Will hit the stripping with 303 tomorrow.

Did a few small things. Lots of pics. Everybody likes pics. ;)

Popped the dimmer knob off and re-clocked it 90 degrees. I already had it's brightness set there, so now my very minor OCD is happy the diagram sits level.

    IMG_20201230_174013.jpg

    IMG_20201230_174030.jpg

Here's the stubby antenna I used to run on my Tacoma that I put on a few months ago (and didn't grab a pic then). Ignore the tree remnants which I haven't washed off.

    IMG_20201230_172813.jpg

Went full TuRD gen with a stainless allen and O-ring. The no-tenna mod.

    IMG_20201230_172741.jpg

    IMG_20201230_173135.jpg

I'll have to see how it is in the rain. My XM & BT adapter uses FM to transmit to the OEM radio. On a previous vehicle no antenna (or allen) was ok when dry but went to crap in the rain. :notsure:

Went by an automotive paint supply store and had some color matched enamel paint made for the bumper trim. Also stopped by vatozone for some charcoal grey trim paint.

Yanked my drivers sunvisor and removed the pivot/mount. The good pivot from the junkyard will get painted if the temps are warm enough outside tomorrow.

You can see how the original is really worn compared to the other. Without that edge on the notch these things just droop too much.

    IMG_20201230_191549.jpg

The trim paint is darker but so little shows it shouldn't bother me like the brighter tan would.

    IMG_20201230_174927.jpg

Also wet sanded the spare bumper trim with 600 grit in prep for paint if warm enough tomorrow.

When the interior is cold (below 40-50 degrees) the dash squeak from the radio bezel at the top came back. The one that I thought I eliminated by removing the metal center clip. I've just been living with it for the last month or so.

    IMG_20201230_165147.jpg

Gonna try this trick out and see if I can shut her up again. Some gorilla tape to space the bezel a hair out, if I had some cloth Tesa tape I probably would have used that instead. Only 1 layer at the moment but I may try 2-3 if 1 isn't enough.

    IMG_20201230_165116.jpg

Swapped the radio control internals of the 4runner switches with the Sienna ones. This makes the color switch from orange to green.

    IMG_20201230_132619.jpg

Circuit boards, wiring and pinouts are identical. Only difference is the LED colors.

    IMG_20201230_133011.jpg

Since I have an '05 SR5 my dash/radio harness was pre-wired for radio controls and I have the correct clock spring. Simple to add controls, just disconnect battery, swap airbag/switches/harness and reconnect battery.

    IMG_20201230_135739.jpg

I'm considering trying to source the right side switches for BT phone controls, if I get a radio capable of it.

grease wont last as long. anti seize will last longest. but even it will eventually be gone. in my trucks i pull the cam tabs at work every couple years and reapply.. but i have an alignment rack at my disposal.

Any old anti-sieze? I know there are certain greases for certain things.

An alignment rack would be real suweet

Nickel anti seize is what I use (nuclear grade... but that’s just because I get that for free)

marine grade might be best.. since its being battered in the north by salt water effectively

I appreciate the confidence guys. I'd have to give this some real thought. It's one thing to make a set of T-Top storage bags for a 300ZX ( My wife and I used to make those for fellow members on the 300ZXClub Forum), but fabricating those frame stiffeners...? I'm no journeyman welder, and I'd hate to have something fail because of my fab skills.

The other hurdles include measuring the frame to create a template, ensuring the upper and lower legs will fit correctly in the contour of the existing frame, prepping the existing frame for installation and repairing any rust that may be on the existing frame.

My right side frame was in fact very clean and required very little prep work, the left side however, did have a small rust hole in it which required fabricating a filler and doubler to repair the frame before installing the stiffener. Much of the stiffener fab work required multiple fittings in the frame to ensure my replacements fit like a factory part.

Longstory short, it's not impossible, but it would be a little difficult to pull this off.
