I can certainly see your point. Full size trucks may not be ideal, but if you need a truck and want a toy, but can't afford both (I know, it's ludicrous because the mods would pay for a little crawler on lots of trucks!) then you wheel your truck. :p

As I was growing up in AZ, almost all 4x4s were ranch trucks and all were full size. Most of the rest were utility rigs, running power lines and buried cables. These were almost all exclusively 3/4t full size trucks. The recreational rigs were either older military jeeps or 1/2t chevy, dodge, and Ford. The first little bronco was a game changer and the Toyota Tacoma came out and really revised things. But it’s not really true to say that full size trucks can’t off road.

Agreed. Certainly have seen video of fullsize trucks taking on Black Bear Pass:thumbsup:, but just don't think it is the right choice. I wouldn't say can't, just not ideal. I notice there are no 2 door Rubicons or Defenders in that pile up video.

There wouldn't be in a tundra group ride.....

More space and some tire chains would have prevented the whole thing. The wreck had nothing to do with the vehicle choice. All the stuff you bring up is part of why I don't go on the off roader trips with my brother and his other 4runner friends, though. I bought an RS1 to go have fun off road. Way cheaper to fix or replace, and I'm not left without a vehicle if/when I smash it up.

Exactly my thoughts as well looking at the video. I couldn’t tell if they were going up or down in the video, though. Looked kind of flat, but it’s always hard to see the true angle on camera.

Anyway, when in groups going up or down we always went one by one. And when on flat ground we always tried to space it out. Good thing is no one got hurt. Sheetmetal can always be fixed.

I think the pics in the Colorado BS thread show how steep it is better than the video.

I have been on 379. A full sized truck can navigate this trail with ease on nice ideal days. Hell, my Subaru Crosstrek with snow tires (closest thing we have to mud terrain tires) could probably do this trail.

This accident has nothing to do with Tundra off-road capability. It just so happened to be a Tundra group. It did have to do with trail awareness and making better decisions. Had four JK/JL/JT Jeep’s done the same thing, there would have been four Jeep’s piled up at the bottom as well.

Not sure if everyone knows this, but IFS vehicles have advantage in the traction department. In reality, the only time a solid front axle has an advantage is hard core rock crawling (when articulating, the differential moves away vs ifs moves closer to the obstacle). IFS stays planted more often on moderate trails.

The off-road group I was with 60 miles to the west that day with a very diverse group of rigs:

    -2002 Chevy Tahoe SAS
-Two 2003 Jeep TJ rock crawlers
    -2017 Tacoma TRD OR
    -2020 Jeep JT Gladiator

Not one of us didn’t have difficulty on hills....it was just slick.

I have seen in multiple threads/sites with people discussing “why take such an expensive truck off-road?” I wonder if those people have priced a JLUR or JTR lately? One of my best friends just purchased a 2020 Jeep JLUR for 50,000.00, and he received a smoking deal due to military discounts and other offerings at the time. He then purchased a lift from Accutune for 4500.00, 37” tires 1500.00, beadlock wheels 1400.00, Warn 10.5 winch 850.00, rocker protection 1300.00, and a spare tire carrier 450.00(I think). It’s safe to say he has close to 60k in his adventure rig.

Many might not realize this either, a Jeep Wrangler JLU is 15.6’ until you put a tire carrier on. Then it’s more like 17’. Jeep gladiator is 18.16’ long. The Toyota Tacoma CC long box I had was 18.79’. A Tundra CM is 19.07’ long. It’s not like the competition in the truck department is much smaller. This Tacoma I was wheeling with this weekend was almost as long as my tow rig.

I'd hope not. Sure, anybody involved in this might get some jokes and jabs, but overall we're pretty supportive. At least all the guys and gals I see going out together are. There've be broken trucks before and they just deal with it.

You can get into a brand new Polaris RS1 for around $13,500 to $14,000 USD. Go used and the price drops. Price goes up on other machines with more seats, but stock they'll go most places anybody wants to. Put a few hundred more into comfort features and tires, and you are still a fraction of what a Jeep/Toyota/Suzuki crawler/trail pig that can keep up is going to cost you. Yes, "budget" is a relative term in this case, but it still applies.

One of my buddies got out of rock crawling Jeep’s due to cost and went with a Can Am Maverick turbo. 30k.

Then needed a trailer. He went enclosed due to theft. 8k

Already had a diesel truck (not that he needed it)

Skid plates, roll cage, new axles, high clearance A arms...god only knows how much that cost.

He thought it would have been cheaper...

From dealing with trails like this daily at work (you can't even walk on them at time they're so slick) space is the obvious one, but watching the video the visibility doesn't look great so hard to know how long to wait if you don't know the trail. Chains are nice but once you blow past their grip they still slide, so using 4lo is my go to now. Using that I can keep an 8000 lb F250 going down 10% slick grades at 2-5 km/h. Gives me a chance to feel for the slick spots and still steer into the less packed snow and keep grip. At least if I had to stop immediately there wouldn't be much more than a dent in the bumper by putting the truck into a bank.
