Against my advice my 9 year old niece is getting a Surface laptop from Santa. I told my sister she needs to get some sort of nanny software on it INSTANTLY! My sister and BIL are technology handicap, so i'm looking for something probably software related that would block all the social media and any kind of chat rooms and hopefully can cut access by time (not letting her play in the middle of the night).

Anyone have any experience with any kind of software related nannies? I'd rather pay a little more to have something good, than something that will make my sister and BIL not frustrated and disable it and go with the "honor system"

I've been looking at Qustodio, Kasperksy Safe Kids, and Norton Family. I also see that windows has a Family Safety built into Windows 10, not sure how well it works.

Depending on their provider/network, they could also set admin restrictions from that end. Xfintiy allows us to control who can access our router and what content they can use

We use the built in Windows family. It sends a record of all screen time, apps used, websites visited, you can add filters, screen time limits, age restrictions and block sites etc

The biggest thing we do is, keep the cpu (desktops) in a common area so whatever they are doing is visible.

Email addresses can be forwarded to adult accounts if you want cc of all incoming emails.

I believe the law cuts it all off at 14 or so, then they are allowed to have full range without adult supervision software and reporting. It won't allow you to add the protective software or monitoring after a certain age based on their Windows or Google profile. At least that is what I remember seeing or having happened to one of their accounts when they hit a certain age.

This is probably the best option to ensure compliance.

OP - You want to look in the wifi access point settings for content filtering settings. It might be listed differently depending on the make of the modem. You can also look into a child-friendly DNS that will block out a lot of the content. You can read more about it probably by searching content filtering DNS.

Lastly whatever antivirus is installed will usually have content/parental controls. Sophos, Avast, bitdefender, etc.

As a sys admin I dont recommend kaspersky. I used to manage our org with PCs under kaspersky and it was a bit of a nightmare plus you have to factor in the Russian spying allegations.

Windows is one of the harder systems to "lock down" for younger kids (actually, harder to lock down for pretty much anyone)...

It is a wonderful OS for doing all the awesome things you can do on Windows, but can be a bear to secure (especially against the evils of the internet for a younger child).

What is the overall use case for the tablet? Browsing the internet? Playing games? Music? Homework using some sort of office suite (MS Office, Google Docs, etc..)? Knowing a few more particulars could help out in this situation for guidance.

For a 9 year old, I'd guess gaming and music would probably be the top two...? If so, it might be a good idea to to ask your sister and BIL if they could return the surface and perhaps pick up a iPad instead. It is easier to sandbox those, and they have much more of the current games, movie streaming, and music services accessible through them. Also, they do work well with MS Office and Google Classroom / Docs.

I have a Surface myself, and it is great for working on the go, but putting myself in the position of a 9 year old... an iPad would be much better fit for what the typical 9 year old does...

    Just my $0.02

I've got an Asus router that will let you set both time and content blocks on specific devices. We got it after my daughter aged out of Google Family Link.

Currently it's set to provide no connection for her from 9pm to 530am and block specific types of traffic the rest of the time. It'll give usage statistics on recent used applications as well.

    Thanks everyone.
I think we will start with the windows one that's built in and see how it works.

She will most likely be using it for light gaming. I think they had a ipad before, but I think it got killed (who knows how). Now they are trying the surface route.
