Hey everyone, new tundra owner here:

I recently bought a 2000 Tundra SR5 with the 4.7L V8. When taking it through emissions it failed. They said that it is running too lean. Afterwards I took it home and read the code for the CEL, the code that showed was P0171. According to other forum posts, I read that the most common causes are a vacuum leak or faulty fuel pump. After not being able to locate a leak I took it to a shop where they said that the fuel pump is the problem. If that is the case I will replace it by myself and hopefully that fixes the issue. Does anyone have any other ideas about what it may be? Or any advice on how to do the repair? Looking to try other possible fixes before spending the money on the pump.

    Thanks!

    How many miles on truck?

Try a new gas cap ($15).

No, no, no - 0171 is a lean condition. The ecu is adding all the fuel it can and the 02/A-F sensors are saying the results are still too lean, too much air. This is not a lack of fuel issue, too much air is getting in via a leak.

Causes are broken rubber hoses between MAF and metal intake or one of the other intake related hoses, one is either cracked significantly or disconnected altogether. You can spray the visible hoses with carb cleaner, if you hit the correct spot a momentary RPM change should occur yet often the cracked hoses are in tough to see areas, so look everywhere. Luck.

+1 I think this was code I had when I replaced my gas cap.

Just spent 2 weeks trying to figure this out on my truck same P0171 code and believe I have got it fixed today. I changed my MAF and the code hasn't showed up all day today normally it would show up within 5 miles of driving before and now the trucks running much smoother. I used the cleaner and ohm's it out before this and still got the light but new sensor has been great so far.

I chased P0171 for about a month to no avail. I replaced the MAF (which weirdly worked for a week or so), removed k&n FIPK and replaced with stock air box/air filter, replaced the gas cap, replaced the plugs, and replaced the fuel filter. I also replaced some questionable vacuum lines that were no longer snug fitting. I finally gave up and brought it to my local dealer. Per my request, they smoke tested it and found no leaks. They ended up doing a throttle body cleaning and it has ran like a champ ever since. Fingers crossed :)

Did you have any running issues or just the light?

It started innocently enough with just the light. I wasn’t too concerned and thought it was the MAF (due to k&n). After about 50 or so miles, it started to idle roughly. The rest is history.

Still running okay since your throttle body cleaning?
