For sure. I have 34" tires on my 3inch lifted Tundra, and I average anywhere between 10-11.9. I haven't done any speedo recalibration though.

Wow. Even without it I was seeing it report around 13.4. Now it shows closer to 14.2.

    dang nice!

Pretty crazy, huh? Reno is a city of mountains and hills, with very little flat ground where I live. I think the combination of NA engine with a heavy foot leads to numbers like that.

I'm about 1/3 of my commute into/out of the hills on windy roads, and the the remainder on highway with a couple miles of city streets right around the office. It's not too bad, but I'll never see anything better than 14.5 I'm sure of it.

you got BSM? I noticed the sensors on the lunar rock thread and thought I was seeing things lol

I really liked the back up cross traffic/BSM when I went from my 06 to 17 tacoma then got over them. I was hesistant on the Pro because it didn't have them but I've been fine as well. I do wish the tundra had front sensors tho

Can't wait to see an update on the speedo calibrator. I might need to look into it as well.

I posted an update in the same post. I ended up using 32" DIA for the "factory" and 33.5" DIA for the "new" tire sizes (1.047 factor) and am getting speedo readings that are dead-on with several GPS apps and on two different devices (iphone and ipad), and a couple of radar signs in the area. I did have to tinker with the settings to get there, but am now a few hundred miles into have it set at those numbers.

Based on what I'm seeing, the initial huge dip in MPG I saw (after changing the tires) and the current MPG I am seeing appear to correlate more to the the tire size/speedo calibration more than anything else. It looks like the "real" hit to MPG from oversizing the tires might be in the ball park of 0.1 to 0.2 MPG - I initially went from 14.4 down to 13.7 on the gage, but I'm now creeping up to around 14.2~14.3 average after getting the hypertech set. And my cruise-control setting numbers all match up with speedometer (I know early reports of people using the hypertech back right after the adaptive cruise control came out were that it didn't "correct" the cruise setting, but it does now).

    1 or 2... I lost count
I don't know if you found an option that you like yet and I'm not trying to hijack the thread here but... Victory 4x4 has an option that you might be interested in if I properly understand what you're looking for https://www.victory4x4.com/product/VTU23BAM-PC.html . They attach to the bed rail and I'm sure there are some locking clamps out there somewhere.

Casey your truck is looking good as well. It seems to be quickly evolving.

Thanks - I've got my eye on them (I think Rago makes a similar setup too). I need to get my bed cover installed first (it relocates the rails lower) and then start looking at particular options for a high jack and stuff like that. My bed cover has the canister at the front that will require removing the rail at the cab as well.

One reason I mount my axe and shovel like I do is simply that they are tucked more tightly up out of the way for when I'm loading dirt, gravel, bark dust, etc. in the truck...or even just loading it with luggage and such. With most of the rail mounted solutions, that space tucked back under the actual rails of the bed sides seems to be lost.

To be honest I was surprised it has bsm and rcta, my wife's 4runner pro didn't have them so I thought truck wouldn't have em either, I also was surprised that it has lumbar adjustment in passenger seat.

I probably should do hypertech too, my actual speed is 6% faster than speedo right now.

Yeah, we did get lumbar for the passenger, which I wasn’t expecting.

6% in km - that’s like a whole speed zone off! :p (I grew up a few miles from BC... much of my childhood was north of the 49th - my brother is actually a dual citizen).

Haven’t done any actual mods in the past week, but have started amassing a pile of stuff.

    • TCUSA American Roll Cover is on order... hoping it comes in next week.
    • OEM tailgate lock arrived
    • OEM bed light kit arrived
    • I’ve ordered a waterproof two position push-button switch, and plan on revising the wiring harness for the lights to route the switch as a secondary control from the bed (so the lights don’t always come on with the cargo lamps, but are primarily controlled by them to eliminate leaving them on).
    • I also plan to re-loom the bed lights wiring with the tailgate lock wiring to simplify the install under the truck...i need to go buy a few more rolls of electrical tape.
    • Black factory radio surround/vent unit arrived (interestingly, it has the slightest “glitter” to it, not just dull black - I like it)
    • After seeing the black trim on the center vents, I’ve now ordered the black side vents as well, and so I’m on the fence regarding getting the AJT trim rings
    • A dual port USB port is in hand that replaces the 12v socket inside the console (has two male usb cables, not just power connections)
    • 12v-to-5v power adapter (with two female USB ports) is in-hand that will get mounted below the console and wired into the factory socket originally in the console. One port of it will provide power-only to one of the USBs in the console
    • Two different USB adapters for the factory wiring are inbound from aliexpress:
      • one plugs into the back of the head unit and is female USB on the other end - it will route the carplay port into my center console to one of the ports in the above 2-port socket
      • The other plugs into the wiring coming from the carplay port and is male on the other end. It will plug into the other power port in the above power adapter, making the original carplay port power only (yes, that will give me three power plugs below the AC, but I hate having a dead port)
    • Anytime Camera kit with the “premium” camera arrived
    • Yotaleds single mount bracket arrived (i plan on mounting the front camera centered above the YO)
    • All the parts to rebuild my tomahawk shifter are in hand, i just need to find someone to cerakote it.
    • I need to place my order for an AJT interior chrome delete kit.
My plan is gonna be to pull it into my MIL’s shop for a weekend when everything gets here and rip the entire cab apart to do a shit done of stuff all at once!
I’ll post pics and details as I get things finalized...

Those are awesome. My Tundra is the only truck I've owned that doesn't have split mirrors and I always miss them.

Anytime Backup Camera .com - I prefer the single OEM-looking switch.

Ironically I got pulled over twice in a month because my speedo was really off in the old truck.

For "premium" camera, does that mean it has higher resolution? I had like 1080p on my Ram's display, would be nice to have that too on my backup camera on this one.

Nice mod! Awesome to see I'm not the only one who re-coats drilled holes, one of the benefits of doing work yourself. I used quickfists for my axe in the last Taco and was very pleased, took it out before selling the truck so gonna re-purpose in the Tundra. Any particular reason you didn't secure in place w a sizable stainless rivet OR stainless rivnut? Not being critical just interested for my own learnings.

I think the “premium” camera means it’s able to be mounted horizontal or vertical, can be used for front or rear facing, and can display parking guide lines (or not). There are three wire loops on the pigtail of the camera - one wire, if you snip it, flips the image vertically (for vertical or horizontal mount). Another wire will flip the image horizontally (it is “rear view” by default, but will be “front view” if clipped) and the third wire will turn off the parking lines. It’s just a NATIKA camera that you can buy on Amazon (I actually have one I was thinking of installing in my daughter’s 08 Forester).

Yeah, even a self-tapping screw, I’ll run in the screw, pull it out to coat the hole, then run it back in to full torque.
The quickfists are made for a #10 screw (that’s the size of the hole in them). I’ve never installed rivnuts at all, so I guess the idea never occurred to me. It would save the hassle of pulling the fender liner, but I have had times in the past where a rivnut would spin out on me...I guess I just went with what I’ve used in the past and knew would last longer than the truck bed itself. It also didn’t require any special tools (not that I’m against buying more tools :D).

There’s a few things that I had on my 2008 that I wish I’d taken off before I traded it in. I hadn’t planned on trading in when I went to go sign papers on the new truck (which was still “en route” to the dealership), and I also was short on time. But the Quickfists were only $10/pair on Amazon, so I figured that’s not worth the hassle to pull the fender liners to remove them (I did remove the axe and shovel at least). I also should have kept the “landing pads” off the Yakima rails on my cover...I’m gonna have to buy a new set of those now. Oh well - I learned for next time.

Got my birthday present from my wife a couple days early - the Tapiona XXL Dog Car Seat Cover
We went on a 9 mile hike in the Gorge today, and wanted to take the dogs. We’re also heading to Long Beach Peninsula in a couple of weeks for a long weekend and will be taking the dogs with us then too, so I needed something to protect the back seat.
Installed in a few minutes, comes with a basic soft zippered case to keep it in (though I need to get it folded back up to fit in there), and seems to work pretty well. The younger dog (Ally - she’s 2-1/2 and very high energy still) still wants to be in the front seat with momma, so that will take a little training, but it worked great.

Couple pics from the hike are here...

Took a gamble on one of the Amazon import half-width console safes that were on sale on Black Friday (price to my door was $68 on this one). I'm not sure if I should be disappointed or happy that mine arrived without the corner bent, because if you look at the picture on Amazon, it appears that is part of the design.
    upload_2020-12-8_9-44-44.jpg

Either way, mine arrived fully intact.
    IMG_0745.HEIC.jpg

Took about 5 minutes to install it this morning in the parking lot at work. Pulled four bolts from the bottom of the existing console (8mm socket with an extension) and then lower the safe into place and install the new bolts that came with it.
    IMG_0747.HEIC.jpg

I now need to decide if I want to modify my OCD organizer to fit into the bottom of it, or if I want to make my own version of the OCD organizer using some 1/4" plywood so I can better arrange the dividers according to the new space. I'm leaning toward building my own dividers/organizer for the inside. I may look for some cupped washers to get the bolt heads to drop a little more flush to the bottom, but it did come with foam to cover them.

Either way - this is only to keep honest people honest...maybe slow down a smash and grab. I've never had one before, so it'll be something new to get used to.

Just placed order for AJT chrome delete parts. And sent a message out to MESO Customs for a couple of items I want to get through them instead, but show out of stock. :fingerscrossed:

A quality riv nut, w a quality tool, proper sized and deburred hole should hold up nice and tight. But nothing wrong w doing what you know works and have on hand. I totally get it. Seems to always be something forgotten when you bid farewell to an old rig. On my last Taco I actually did the opposite and accidentally kept the owners manual... realized a few weeks later when I was digging through my box of goodies from when I emptied out the truck. New owner never said anything but I mailed it to him :)

The larger quickfists are nice for a mini fire extinguisher; too bad the back seat doesn’t flip down as it would be a great location.

A little sleuthing and I came across a 2019 Tacoma gunmetal/leather steering wheel. I plan on cleaning it up and using the gunmetal switch trim from it for my truck. If the wheel itself is in good shape after I clean it up, I'll be offering it up for sale.

@Jim LE 1301 pointed me in the direction of MESO Customs for their 4x4 selector trim chrome delete (it only replaces the chrome tip but retains the factory rubber instead of the full replacement of the AJT version). While digging around on there, I fell in love with the red TRD Start Stop button...so that's ordered now too. AJT chrome delete kit is also ordered.

I have both the red stop/start button and the 4x4 trim ring from MESO, very easy install for both and I think they look great

    love my button,
Tip: paint or vinyl wrap the chrome ring around it while you’re at it!

Got my Truck Covers USA American Roll Cover mostly installed this weekend. I ordered it though Patrick and team over at Accessory Outfitters in Aloha, OR (same place I got my previous one that was on my 2008). Great guys, great little shop, and super helpful getting my lined out with some other goodies. I opted to do the install myself, just because I am particular like that.

First step is the bed rail relocation brackets. These are 1/4" thick powder-coated aluminum - not great for putting a bunch of side load on, but that's why I've got the four bed bolt tie-down points and the four factory corner tie-downs.

The process of shimming and adjusting the side rail clamps is a bit tedious, and it was getting dark, COLD, and windy, but I got them mostly in place Saturday evening. These ones went much better than the 2008 did - the bed sides on this truck seem to be "flatter" so the rails didn't want to tilt down like they did on the previous truck.

Picture of it basically finished (other than fine-tuning the lock latch position at the tailgate and getting the drain tubes installed).

Picture from back with the cover open (drains not hooked up yet).

And picture with the cover closed.

Edit: I got the drain tubes hooked up on Tuesday night since it wasn't raining.
I used some 3/4" PVC electrical seal-tight fittings, and hit them with a heat gun to adjust the angle to something closer to about 60 degrees.

While I was taking a step drill bit to the bed of the truck, I laid out and started the holes for my bed light kit as well.
    IMG_0796.HEIC.jpg

Then measured and drilled 1-1/16" holes for the rear rail drain tube mounts. I also painted cold-galvanizing compound (using a paint brush) on the exposed metal after drilling the holes.

That specific spot allows you access (sort of) by removing the tail light, so that I could get the backing nut on the sealtight fitting.

The ones in the bottom of the canister were pretty straight forward, except for getting to the backing nut. For that, I used a long paint stir stick with some 3M tape on it, and had my daughter's boyfriend hold the nut in place stuck to the stick while I threaded the fitting on from the inside. Once we had it threaded on enough that it wouldn't fall off, then he used the corner of the stick to catch a tab on the nut while I finished turning the fitting. It actually went super quick - we had both fittings installed in less than 5 minutes (and no dropped nuts or swearing).

Now, if I need to replace the drain tubes at all, I can do so pretty easy and those drain fittings won't be going anywhere. And yesterday it rained like a son-of-a-bitch and all the water drained out perfectly.
