I've been noticing a knock noise in the front end when going over bumps and potholes lately. I couldn't replicate it until today. Parked in the driveway I had my gf push the front end side to side and got the noise to appear. It's coming from the wheel hub, like a slight movement or looseness. Before I crack it open does this sound like a loose hub nut or a bad bearing? I'd say it's like a 1/16 or less of movement and it louder when going over bumps etc. I'm in mexico till may so getting parts sucks.

Wheel bearing was replaced in 2019 it sounds fine and with wheel off there's no signs of it being bad. My driver cv axle is getting replaced soon as it will click occasionally in 4x4.

Jack the truck up and try spinning the wheel around in 2WD to see if it spins rough/ makes any noise etc. Also try jerking the wheel from the top and bottom to see if you're getting any play. Axle nut is easy to check and can be done without removing the calipers, as can a full CV axle replacement. Remove the wheel and the dust cover, axle nut is a 35mm. It is possible that the CV joint on the axle you're going to replace has failed?

Thanks man I'll get it up on Jack's today and see what I come up with. Hoping I just had a cotter pin come out and the axel nut needs to be torqued. I'll post an update

Definitely let us know what you figure out. If you end up messing with the axle nut, you can stick a screwdriver in the rotor to keep it from spinning when you tighten it.

So I popped off the wheel and inspected everything. There is no audible noises coming from the bearing really. A very slight nicking sound only after a few revolutions. It spins clean/free and for a long period of time. The noise I'm hearing mostly comes from the cv joint closest to the hub and there is about 1/8 or a little more of play laterally on the cv joint. When I wiggle the tire at 12 and 6 there is no play, at 3 and 9 o clock there is a small knock but under load I'm sure it's more as i can hear it in the cab on shitty mexican roads at slow speeds. The tie rod is solid and brand new, upper and lower ball joints are solid brand new, the hub nut is over 150lbs torque (that's all mine does) new rotors, brakes, calipers pretty much everything.

Would a cv axel give this type of play? I've always been spoiled with straight axles so ifs setup has only been in my life for about 6 months.

So it's my driver cv axel, problem is I'm in mexico and the only replacement I have easy access to here is the cardone crap. I knew I should have got replacements as spares before I crossed the border but it didn't happen.

Should I order a set of napa hd cv to have someone bring down or am I wasting money on them. Can't really afford oem and cvj wants cores so that makes it a little tough.

Should I get new cv axel seal and wheel bearings while I'm at it? I guess if someone has a full parts list for the complete job I'd be super thankful.

Also if someone wants to come down here and get free offshore fishing trips for bringing parts that would be awesome. Don't you want to gtf out of america for a bit, take a vacation and help a brother out lol

Yeah. It sucks to have to buy New OEM, but you’ll be better off spending a little extra. I have chyna ones as I didn’t plan on needing New Ones when the front end was rebuilt and had not budgeted the $. Should have just bit the bullet on Toys. Get some new Toyota seals.

Skip Remans as they cost about the same as NEW OEM in the end. Go All NEW Toy OEM.

Maybe wait it out till next season?

    Hows things in Mex?

Yeah I wish oem was in the cards but I have to be careful with money this year. Tourism is low here so my boat is not producing it's normal cash flow. I did find oem used on ebay with 72k miles, that could be my best option till I get back to the states. For sure on the seals new oem.

I'm having lateral knocking from the driver side so i don't want it to beat the hell out of my diff.

Everything is great here in mexico, everyone is following protocall with covid and the hospitals are empty. Our town has had only 2 cases during the pandemic. People get tested for free regularly here. Hopefully tourism picks up at Christmas time. Until then I'm just fishing for tuna and marlin all alone lol.

Also I have to drive back to the states in may and would hate to break down on my way back, overlanding through baja so I want to be certain its solid. Parts are hard to come by here.

@Surf_spear_Mex where you in Mexico? You have a website? Wife and I might get away in near future. Thought of sitting by pool and drinking sounds boring. Thought of fishing and drinking sounds great. Thanks

Hey buddy, I'm in punta de mita, nayarit. The Riviera of northern america, 75° everyday in the winter, yellow fin tuna jumping into the boat, and ice cold margaritas on tap. I don't have a website at the moment, never really needed one with the flow of tourist here but I could see it being beneficial in these times. If you want details, photos, or more info on anything (accommodation etc) just email me at pj.metzger@yahoo.com i can also shoot my number if you want to chat it up a bit. It's worth your time to make it down here. Covid is not a problem here in my state, everyone is taking things seriously. I personally have not see this much cooperation from the mexican people in the 5 years I've lived here.

    Come on down amigo
