Crew max with tow package short bed with sway control and trailer brake assist. 5.7 v-8 engine.
I've been a Toyota owner since 1984, I just bought my first Toyota truck 2017 tundra 4x4 crew max, with a tow package and a 5.7 v8 engine, short bed. I bought it to tow the trailer we are getting next week 32' 5,690 pounds dry weight, 7,800 pounds gvw. I've already bought a weight distribution hitch with sway control since the tundra isn't rated to handle the numbers of my trailer and now it looks like the trailer brake controller system won't do the job either. I called Toyota customer service and they told me they have no records of any complaints about this situation. My suggestion is that anyone that has experienced this problem they need to call and complain or Toyota will never do anything they need to do to fix it.

How did you determine that the trailer brake controller won't handle the trailer?

Welcome from CO..Ralph. Second opinions are always good. Sometimes you get the same answer.

Do you know how many times I've called Toyota to gripe about the 5.7 mpg's? Zero.....and...why did you go for the 5.5ft CMax bed and not a DC? Maybe it makes no difference when it comes to towing. Toyota NEEDS to make a Cmax w/8ft bed with super duty suspension. Imho.

So you're towing something your truck isn't rated for and you're surprised the brake controller isn't rated for it either?

Thats like complaining my coffee isn't hot enough when I ordered it iced.

No manufacturer I know supplies new trucks with weight distribution hitches. Without it, typically your towing specs becomes about half the max value. I suspect if you have mentioned this to Toyota, they would consider your credibility to be negligible.

I have no clue as to what the problem is with your brake controller (that you saw even before you purchase a trailer)? Instead up starting another thread, you may want to explain what the problem is. Just a suggestion. Without any specifics, we do not know how to respond . . . unless you goal is simply to vent.

Yeah most of them add the "when properly equipped" disclaimer to their tow ratings. I'm confounded how people can spend that much money on something without doing the research, and then turn around and blame the manufacturer.

    Tundra's and Half tons:

-Anything over 5K it is required to use a LDH. Your truck is rated to haul your camper (your not going to like it much, in my opinion). To be rather blunt, all 1/2 ton trucks have this requirement, and if you didn't want to run a LDH, you should have purchased a bigger truck and a 5th wheel. I now own a 1 ton GMC and do not have the requirement to use a LDH with my similar sized camper (but more weight) and will still continue using my LDH. I no longer use the WDH with my equipment hauler (thankfully, pain in the ass on that trailer) and it is more weight than the TT, but short and doesn't have a lot of wind defection that a large TT does.

    Tundra brake controller:

-I have read that the brake controller on the Tundra is not very good, but may have been resolved by now? I would try it out first....

Thanks TJ. I'm hooking to my neighbors trailer tomorrow to make sure all is working fine. I'll let ya know how that works out after I get done.

I think that is a great idea, and recommend that to everyone that is contemplating buying a camper or something that they tow.

Keep us posted. I hope the brake controller works for you.
