Reading the owners manual it appears we are supposed to engage 4WDH for ten miles a month problem is manual also says "

4H” (high speed position, four-wheel drive)
Use this for driving only on tracks that permit the tires slide, like off-road, icy or snow-covered roads. This position provides greater traction than two-wheel drive.
The “4HI” indicator will come on.

I don't have 10 miles of dirt roads aroud me. what does it hurt driving on concrete?

    thanks

Just don't take sharp corners. The drivetrain will bind up if you're at full crank. If you're on a highway with it on it's golden. Also imo 10 miles is a bit excessive, I would just turn it on for a bit occasionally to make sure everything can actuate fine.

I just activated mine the other day while backing out of the garage.

I try and do it every couple months

I just wait for rainy days and engage for a few miles. Easy peasy...

I can get from my house to work, 13km, using 4HI. I disengage when I get to the parking lot as corners are too sharp.

    Concrete is fine OP

I do this religiously every month. Usually wait until it's raining and find a straightish road, drive 5 miles out and back. Or head into the forest and drive dirt for 10 miles. If I have to turn I take it out of 4wd and then reengage when straight. Then back at the driveway I put it in and out of 4 low. Have to keep the drivetrain exercised, lubed, and working.

I've got a couple of gravel parking lots near me. I hit one up every few months and just drive around and do some figure-8's. The 10-miles is stupidly unrealistic for most people.

Yes, I use it as an excuse to my wife so I can go offroading. Or when I get lazy washing the truck from off-roading I just find a long straight away and engage 4wd just don’t make any turns.

Yeah I can see where you are coming from. I'm guessing Toyota has determined that 10 miles allows the fluid to heat up and expand sufficiently so it gets to where it needs to go and burns off any moisture. But again that is a complete guess.

How fast you can drive on 4WDH? I remember something like 55 mph but don't have manual with me. I usual do below 50 mph but want to know what is fast safe speed I can go.

There's no speed limit in 4Hi. Only when you can engage it.

Yup, no speed limit for 4hi but you have to be below 65mph before you turn that knob from 2wd.

My truck is old 2010 Crewmax 4x4. Bought it used. I regularly actuate the 4 hi and 4-low even on the driveway. Just to actuate it so the mechanism won't get stuck. On the freeway here when there's traffic, I put it on 4-hi. I keep an eye on speed so not to exceed the specified limit or I won't be able to switch to 2wd until the speed gets below 40 mph I believe. 4-lo can be done on huge parking lot. Absolutely no turning.

Thanks everyone. No doubt in Houston we get the rain. I like the straight rainey road idea the best, that won't be an issue.

Isn't it limited? Out on the dry lake bed didn't we find out that we couldn't go over 90-ish?

I don't think I engaged 4WD in the year 2020. Hmmmmm. Maybe I should in 2021. Let's see if the spirit invades me.

I engage it when I need it, which outside of winter isn't much. 10 miles per month always struck me as unnecessary and unrealistic.

Haha. I haven’t even driven 10 miles in my truck in the last 6 months. Zero of that in 4wd.

kudos to you for reading the owners manual! Just bought a 21 CM 4x4 SX last month.. would you recommend cracking open that manual and browsing?

    Any other notable facts?

The only limit I found for 4hi/2wd is the speed limiter, not sure if that is what we hit on the dry lake. I have 2 choices for speed limiter, both coincide with a tire speed rating, assume one is for the 18”, other for 20” oem tires. Fixed mine, but there isn’t much power left to make a noticeable difference in 4hi on dirt.

i'm probably at around 100 miles in 4wd out of the 8500 miles I've put on the pickup since I bought it back in March of this year. Feels pretty solid with the Coopers in the snow. Still not a true dedicated winter tire, but plenty of grip.

That's good to know. I've been thinking about the Cooper AT3 4S to replace my stock Michelins, 275/65/R18.
