It's still running. Just puffing a significant amount of blue oil smoke. Worse on cold starts. It ran great for about a day and a half. Its eerily similar to what it was doing back when I started this job.

Sorry to hear this. ProSpeed in Houston sells 5.7 long blocks made for boost if you’re interested in keeping the truck.

Well after sleeping on it and giving myself some time to think, some things have become clear to me. The whole process I just went through was pretty difficult and time consuming. Lots of learning and fumbling with a totally unfamiliar power train. Figuring out the layers of systems and procedures was quite challenging and frustrating.

I think I can have that motor back out in 1/10 of the time. I will be hunting a medium mileage 5.7 to take it's place. While I'm handling those logistics and shopping for the right deal, I'm going back into the 250k mile block to see what I can see. Y'all get your popcorn.

Did you stagger the ring gaps? If they are all in line there is the path for oil consumption. Usually they are staggered between 90 and 120 degrease. Was just a thought.

Man that sucks. Sorry to hear that.

I completely rebuilt a turbo Subaru engine with my son and we put it all back together and fired it up and it purred like a kitten except for the coolant coming out of the tailpipe. I proceeded to redo EVERYTHING we had just done and started over. It’s got 500 miles on it now and runs like a champ.

I feel your pain. You’ll get it back together! The second time is the charm!

I would look the cooling system over top to bottom and the supercharger should be checked for wear. I suspect your engine is getting coolant in the combustion chamber from the cylinder head. The bottom end may be ok still

Well guys, I've made a decision. Life circumstances have led me to re-evaluate my position on going back into this motor. I'm going to cut my losses, and sell this whole project. What do yall think it's worth? $4-5k?

This is very interesting. I just had a piston brake, about a 2 inch section of the top ring. Noticed light white smoke. Took it in only to find very minimal damage all things considered. Don’t have to bore or anything ... now just waiting on the new headers, forged pistons, bearings, rods, HC oil pump and stud kit to come in to start building

I put a super charger on a 22R engine in a 84 Toyota. Worked great but eventually the boost was too much for the pistons. I think the engine had been rebuilt and the pistons in it were not the originals. The ends of the compression rings wore the ring groove to about 1/4" wide. It wasn't a daily driver so I really didn't care too much. Sonce it had the solid axle and was lifted with 35 Super Swampers on it I could just pull the head and oil pan and replace the pistons. I kind of cheaped out and didn't get high quality pistons and within no time she started puffing smoke. I was out playing around and ended up spinning a bearing. After that I just replaced the truck with an 88 with the V6. At some point you just have to make the choice to move on. I would be happy if I got 240k miles out of a stock V8 with a supper charger.

I think the 22R is a much better engine than the 88 model V6-3slo. The 3slo had head gasket issues unless it is fixed properly, and or replace the crossover exhaust in the back of the engine with headers that don't cross over. Keeping the heat in that area to a minimum.

In my opinion if you are going to modify an engine that originally did not have a supercharger on it, it needs to be gone through and modified to accept the boost, other wise you end up with an engine that does not last, as you already know. But hey, I'm sure you had fun with it until it gave out though.:burnrubber:

I got the supercharger used from a guy who blew up the engine in his 89 Toyota. He admitted to abusing the truck so it was mostly self inflicted (I see a common theme here). Since it was cheap and I really didn't care much about the engine I just bolted it on and found some mud to play in. The V6 may not have been as good of an engine but it did make good power stock. Even the EFI version (the 22RE) made more power. Way back then nearly 400hp the 5.7 has today was unheard of. I think that 22R was less than 100hp. Trying to spin 35 super swampers was asking a lot of that motor.

Now, of course, I can afford to build an engine right if I wanted to. Also with the internet you can learn a lot more about each engine and what you can expect from it. Also you can find out what parts should be used (like lower compression pistons) and setting up the pulley ratio to keep the boost level to match your engine. The downside is that I would never take a Tundra through the stuff that I did with those older Toyotas. With all the sensors and actuators I'm not sure how well it would do in deep mud. It might of sucked in rain and snow to get out and lock in a hub but there was almost nothing to go wrong with the 4wd system back then.

It's too bad that the OP is so far away. His Tundra sounds like a great place to start. Gut the anti-lock brakes, rebuild the engine, and if it's 4wd put a nice lift and lockers on it and make a great play truck.

I had such high hopes reading through this thread only to be sad at the end. Not ever story can have a happy ending I guess. Did anyone on the forum end up with this truck and breath some new life into it? Or did it go full part out.

I consider supercharging my old 07 daily driver just for kicks but this makes me aware of the risks at high mileage.
