No real difference that I can tell. Think I changed the fluid around the 3k mile mark after my first real tow. 36k on the truck now no issues.

The super tech gear at Walmart actually rates really well.

synthetic 75-90 is around $7 a qt and has friction modifier already added

You don't need friction modifier/limited slip additive on Tundras unless you got an aftermarket LSD.

My 2019 Tundra manual says the oil should be 75w85, not 75w90.

I think that it is such a minor difference that either one is fine. Some good info over @ bitog. I used 75-90 and didn’t think twice

Sounds like 75-90 is a little better if you tow a lot, thats what I run in my 14 dc mobil 1 full synthetic.

Is it bad for our non-limited slip differential to use limited slip differential oil?

I use Amsoil in my entire truck. Except for the transmission (for now have replacement fluid. Need time to swap it.) and the transfer case since they don't have comparable fluid. I can also get Amsoil at cost for whoever wants some.

thats fine and just as good if not better.

limited slip additives are just improving lubrication and that’s good regardless of diff not being LS.

Warranty, man. After that, yeah, maybe. The manual calls fro 75w85. It does not say or equivalent or any other language like that.

Im using Motul synthetic on my diffs, quite inexpensive vs my other choice (Redline) and probably just as good.

Amsoil here for my Fundra, I went a tad thicker due to our heat.

Hey that's awesome! I saw Project Farm do an oil comparison and Amsoil was the winner. I just got my Tundra and would like to use the best

how many quartz does it take?
So 75w85 is recommended for 2014 5.7 Tundra, i believe is time to changed mine especially because i tow a RV Trailer so need to get my tuck ready for summer. So any one has videos on how to do it? Well im guessing just unscrew the top then the bottom and drain. Re-tight the screws back on and fill it up? Any ideas?

3.8 Quarts but it can vary. There's some good videos on youtube. You got the process. I think 36 ft/lb torque when tightening.

@Tiamat 75W90, will this only work on 4WD or does it matter? I have SR5 Automatic Tundra 5.7L, wondering but i think it does not. First time going to do it this weekend so just trying to get some answers

Has anyone found their differential oil to be the color of cardboard? Or coffee with a fair amount of milk in it?

Well I think I waited way too long. I heard this whining noise, sounded like it was coming from under the drivers seat. I pulled the transfer case, disassembled it and found the planetary and the output shaft to be scared lightly. The inside of the planetary there is no race to replace. The planetary alone was almost the cost of a new T case. So I put a brand new one in. I’m a little frustrated right now because of the noise. I’ll find it, I will find it! Thank you for the reply, I agree with you, water. I bought the truck with 8,900 miles on it from a Toyota dealer in Frederick, MD in 2013. I lived in PA at the time. The family that had it had a boat. That answers the questions about the water

Hello all. I found the whining culprit
    !60148C6A-BF63-4011-935A-F1A0EC93F782.jpg
The gear oil is contaminated with water and rust. The axle bearings have double row of roller bearings.
    90C54C12-6D45-4F90-8391-E0AC7A6F76E9.jpg
    D43386C5-5BAB-4DF7-B129-04FD3DD63E2B.jpg
I just dropped off the axles and new bearings at a local machine shop in Chesapeake, VA. I’m told they’re good at what they do. I have a lot of cleaning to do. I’m just chilling today, tomorrow I pull the gear assembly and start cleaning the housing up. I found a lot of grit in the housing. After pricing used rear end assemblies, I went with a brand new gear assembly. I’m going to extend the vent for the read end housing up to the bottom of the truck bed. The OEM vent sits right on top of the housing. When I bought this Tundra back in 2013 it had 8,889 miles on it. The salesman told me that the previous owner pulled a boat with it. That should have been a red flag. Backing a boat down the ramp and getting it deep enough into the water never dawned on me. Also never think to drain the oil in the rear. I certainly checked the oil levels in the rears and transfer case. Why would I drain the oil on an 8,000 mile pickup? Now I know why I should have.

Also I’d like to let everyone know the Toyota Dealer here in Virginia Beach wanted $2,200 plus tax for the gear assembly.

Lakeland Toyota in Lakeland,FL was $500.00 cheaper with the shipping, and they don’t collect taxes from out of state customers.

Nice but not nice, glad your taking care of her correctly to put you on pace for many trouble free miles.

I would have had an itch to install LSD as one of those "While I'm in there" lol
