2006 Tundra 280k miles on it, my chime goes off when I take the key out of ignition and open the door.
I've gotten it to stop occasionally by messing with the headlight switch. Anyone have an idea as the cause of this? Headlights are not on when this happens. Thanks

You mean the engine off, door open chime? Mine does it too, no worries. The wife's Lincoln plays the radio when you shut the engine off until you open the door.

Another cool auto feature on 2002 models is head lights off when key/engine is killed. Lights auto off when driver door opens.

Nice features, but I can see how they would be inconvenient if you're trying to get into the woods quietly before daybreak...or up to your gal's house without being detected. You could pull the bulbs I guess and maybe stuff something over the chime port...or just belly crawl in from a distance in full blackout mode.

There's an "OFF" position on the headlight switch. The auto-off functions only come into play if you leave the switch in the "ON" position.

Sounds like whatever the mechanism is that connects the headlights auto-off feature to the ignition key chime thingy is probably loose or damaged. Don't have the wiring diagram in front of me to see what that looks like. My truck doesn't have the chiming. I've had it for 15 years now, I likely removed it a long time ago, but can't recall.

Is it possible your ignition switch is not seated all the way to OFF position? Theoretically, you shouldn't be able to pull the key out unless it's in the OFF position... but with a high mileage vehicle, a worn lock cylinder can sometimes allow the key to be removed while between the ACC and OFF positions. (mine does this on my Tundra, and I've had the same experience with another high mileage Toyota I owned in the past. In fact, I can remove my key with the engine running -- which I like for a number of reasons).

Next time it does this, reinsert the key and try turning it all the way to off, then pull the key out. If that fixes it, then the problem was caused by the ignition switch thinking the key was still inserted. And that's why you are getting the chime.

tvpierce, thanks for that advice. I tried what you suggested and it worked mostly. I'll be installing a new lock cylinder. Thanks again

My son's Mustang does this sometimes. Have to put the key back in and "jiggle the handle" so to speak. I might try some graphite or key tumbler approved lube in there.

I’m getting the same annoying “ key out, door open” chime.

Is it possible any of you have the crappy dealer-installed "KARR" security system? They seem to die after a decade or two, and start doing really weird stuff to the interior electronics related to horn, door/window function, locks, chimes, etc.
