Beautiful pics! Currently I'm sitting home in SW MO enjoying my last day off until we head up to the Fryingpan River in CO next week (13 hrs). Only hope to get pics as good as yours!
I've had a walking stick/wading staff save my bacon more than a few times. Won't fish or hike without one now.

thanks again for the tip man! i've hit the preserve 3 times now in 2 weeks on reserved tags because you shared the info and didn't horde it, lol, including a trip yesterday. really appreciate you for that. so far away for me though. some rugged terrain, good amount of hiking in waders and technical water but i'm really looking forward to one day hooking up on a 30" brown. as you prob know, that run is about to start late this month/oct.

A late reply but just wanted to thank all of you for the great input. This setup is going to be primarily for trout fishing. I ended up buying a used TFO NXT 8'6 5wt setup on eBay for a steal. Super excited to start practicing casting and get on the water. Have a trip planned at the end of the month with my friend who's going to be teaching me some more. Just have to buy some flies and a landing net now. This is yet another hobby that has me going down the wormhole of cool gear to buy :) Hopefully i'll be posting some catches here in the near future. More likely stuck and lost flies though.

Fishing has been outstanding. Still lots of people but plenty of solitude if you’re willing to walk a bit. This spot is the mother of all bushwhacks so it was just me and my two buddies B9D7E7C1-DC21-4585-B258-2642736B65E5.jpg

Had a blast on my first time out fly fishing. Practiced roll casting a bunch in my yard. It was definitely a lot of getting used to and my two friends i went with were very patient teaching me. Have a ton to learn but i had a blast and can't wait to go out more. Here are some pics from the trip.

Friend came into town for a weekend, so we decided to drive around and look for some new water. Didnt catch anything, but had a good time driving around.

question about sling packs? They seem to be popular, so i found an Orvis safe passage sling used for $50 to give it a try. When i got home, i instinctively put it on my left shoulder since i'm a right handed caster. Realizing the label was upside down, i read up on it and learned that it is only to go over your right shoulder. I loaded it up and thought it was great when i put it on in the house, and thought the hemostat pouch on the front of the sling was great. On the river, it was a bit of a different story. When i change flies (or untangle my leader), i put the rod under my left armpit since i'm right handed. This makes slinging it around impossible. The obvious solution is to sling it around, then put my rod under my arm, which is something that would take a lot of getting used to. The other problem is that when you're working out of the bag, the hemostats are out of reach. So to get a split shot out of the bag, you can't pinch it down until you sling the bag back around. An easy solution would be a second set of hemostats to keep with the shot, but i think my bigger problem is keeping it on my right shoulder. Anyone else have this problem? Maybe i should sell this one and get one that could go over either shoulder? Or just awkwardly wear this one upsidedown?? Thanks.

I’ll bet you have some good water in your neck of the woods. Spent some time in SW Montana but we’ve never made it up to Glacier.

went hunting for them 30" browns since they head upriver from the mccloud reservoir in Oct. b@stards eluded me again lol but still an incredible trip at the conservancy. scored the last walk-on fishing tag...whoop! i prob should stop at a local fly shop next time and chat it up with them or get a guide. i really want to pull a river monster from this place.

getting better in my travel routine for 1-2 day trips. this time i traveled super light and slept in my crewmax with the seats folded down. thermarest air pad then tempurpedic memory foam pad on top. it was so comfy i could have slept in it all day. i'm not very tall and can just about have my legs out straight door to door. just need some window privacy covers. don't mind my missing tweeter. it went bad so JRT is helping with warranty. :)

My son wanted to start fly fishing about 2 years ago when he was 8. We spend our time mostly trying for native brookies in the Smokies. I’m jealous of the wide open areas you guys have to cast. Most of our stuff is small Mtn streams behind a rock, with lots of branches hanging over the water.

We’ve tied a few flies, mostly for bluegills, but plan on doing more tying this winter for next season.

I’ll dig up some pics of streams we have been on.

Beautiful fish. We do have a lot of casting room out here but i fish a lot of tiny creeks overgrown with willows. A roll cast is essential. Often I’m not really even casting just dipping the fly into a hole behind rocks.

@gladecreekwy yep. First cast over the rock might be the only one you get here. There are a few bigger tailwaters but a lot are over fished or full of tubers, and then there are couple larger rivers but they have TVA dams so you have to catch the generation schedule just right.

May sons casting is awesome, I could definitely use some work. Fly fishing is good for him due to being able to fish a spot and move, fish and move. Wading in creeks and catching fish would have been awesome when I was 10.

We actually just got the Tundra for more fly fishing camping trips after getting tired of packing everything in a 2 door Jeep for far too long.

I grew up fishing tiny creeks and still love them. Don’t really care how big the fish are. My fishing buddies don’t care either

Not the normal fly fishing species, and massive overkill with my setup, but it was fun!
