    Well.....

My new 2020 Limited was the victim of a texting teen. Not too bad, about $3,000 in damage. Passenger bedside will need to be repainted, new rear wheel and tire, mud guard. Body shop said they will remove the bed to give them access to wrap the new paint around the front of the bed.

Truck only has 1100 miles on it. I am going to hit the at fault drivers insurance with a diminished value claim and see what happens. The truck will now have this recorded on the car fax.

Call me anal, but I am seriously considering trading for another truck if I am successful with the diminished value claim. Was planning to keep this one for a long time. Just puts a bad taste in my mouth with it having body work right out of the gate.

Anyone have any experience with this?

That sucks. We don’t change cars often in our house...10 years is about the shortest time we’ve owned a rig.

We initially had similar thoughts about trading in immediately when my wife’s brand new 2017 Subaru Forester got mangled by a teenager pulling out in front of her and my daughter. In that case, total damage came out to over $17k (more than half the original cost of the car) for all factory parts.

When we got it back from the body shop, you couldn’t tell it wasn’t a new car. They provided lifetime (to original owner of course) warranty on anything they touched with a full itemized breakdown of every part, piece, and labor. My wife was skeptical at first, and drove it hesitantly at first while we worked with insurance on the diminished value claim and all the rest.

We’re now three years into owning the car (and about 65k on the clock). If you didn’t remind her that the thing was in a wreck, my wife would probably forget it ever happened. And that $8k diminished value check did a great job of knocking down the principal on our house...

How did you handle the diminished value claim? Did you do it on your own or did you hire an appraiser?

Who is your insurance carrier? You’ll get your insurance to cover the damages if you have coverage, but a lot of times they won’t bite on minimal repairs ruining the value of a truck. Especially one that has a high resale value and is new. It might not be up to you to make a diminished value property damage claim if you don’t hire an attorney. A lot of times they don’t take it seriously. I’d go consult an attorney, but odds are you’d only get reasonable repairs done.

And this all depends if you want to go through all that trouble.

We talked to our insurance (we handled the whole claim through them and let them fight with the other insurance company, aside from the DV) and they gave us a couple of appraisers to contact. The one we ended up using was very knowledgeable on the process, provided us with all the documentation we needed and helped us with navigating submitting the DV claim to the other company (basically a “demand” letter) and negotiating the final amount. We did pay out of pocket for all of that (a few hundred bucks of I recall correctly). I don’t think you’d get anywhere with a DV claim without an independent certified appraisal of what the DV is... the at fault insurance company certainly doesn’t want to acknowledge that DV is even a thing, and our insurance said “not our problem, but these people can help you with that.” Also depends on your state... some don’t support or allow DV claims. And, as mentioned above, if the base damage is only a couple thousand on a high resale vehicle, you might not get much traction at all.

My first Tundra (2010) had 800 miles on it when I got rear ended (only ruined the bumper). Before I could get that fixed, someone backed into the side of it w/1,050 miles and had to get a new door and bedside and some other stuff. All this happened while I still had paper plates. Pissed me off! Sold it w/45K miles.

Well....looks like about $2500 to repair it. New rear wheel/tire, rear bumper end on passenger side and repair/repaint the bedside. The body shop did say they would remove the bed so that the new clear coat could be wrapped around the front of the bed. Anyway, got a drop off date of the 28th to have it fixed. They are also going to put it on an alignment rack to just insure there is no hidden suspension damage. Geico says we have to wait until it is repaired to discuss diminished value. More than likely will not have it back until after the new year.

Sounds like progress. Sorry to hear about the ordeal. Keep us posted. It would be great to see some before and after pics.

If they give you diminished value and the body shop does a good job, keep the equity that you will have established with the truck. Sick whatever amount they give you away and use it on a down payment when the time is right to get a new truck. Sounds like the damage is mostly cosmetic so unless the drivability is altered I would keep it.

I am probably going to wait and see what the body shop comes back with after they put it on the alignment rack. Only thing that concerns me is the passenger rear wheel took 100% of the initial hit. It seems to drive fine even before the repair, not sure if anything is slightly out that I cannot see that may increase tire wear. Also, is anything internal to the rear axle damage that may not show up until much later. I will post some before pics shortly. Really does not look that bad in the pictures, but there are chunks of aluminum missing from the wheel.

I’ve seen diminished value claims go through. Should be pretty easy just don’t take no for an answer. Best of luck with it

Pictures might not be showing all of the damage but I’d try cleaning that bed off first. Either some thinner on a rag or a little compound. If 90 plus percent wipes off I’d think about pocketing an appearance allowance and leaving the factory finish intact. Just a thought after seeing the pictures.

Will not buff out, body shop has already looked at it. Some of it may, but the paint is definitely damaged. Paint is actually gone on the bumper. I am way to Anal to leave it as is.

I hear you and I'd do the same. We pay big bucks for these trucks, and if this forum is any indication of our commitment, we then spend even more money in care, accessories and modifications. I would definitely get the truck repaired and looking like new, including a new wheel.

I hope that the teen who hit you is ok. I also hope that they got ticketed and will learn a lesson to put the damn phone away while they are driving.

    No one was hurt.

Believe it or not, the sheriff did not give him a ticket. It was right before Thanksgiving and he was in the Holiday Spirit and no one was hurt. He did say the report would show him at fault.

Also, Geico had on their estimate for a reconditioned wheel. Body shop said to not worry, he would file a supplement and have them install a new wheel, esp since the truck is so new.

I wrecked a 2014. Guy ran a stop sign and t boned me. $11,000 in damage. I filed a diminished value claim and got 5k. I used a diminished value "lawyer" which is in your best interest, cost me $250, they do all the work and you do nothing.

I’ve been a body shop manager for years and heard stories of DV but never heard the outcomes. I can not believe some of you are getting close to the 50% mark on the total claim, I would have guessed 10-15% at most. OP keep that truck it’s not that bad, definitely not worth the hit of trading.

Truck is paid for....I would only have to come out of pocket very little after the DV Claim.

Well, Tundra sold today. Market is extremely crazy right now. Sold the truck for significantly more than I paid for it back in Sept. New Platinum will be in Houston on Feb 26th and in Baton Rouge a week or so later.
