I had to do this to 3 of the 4 I owned. Never had an issue after. Then the one I didn't do the jump to had the fuel pump go out. I decided to check the fuel ecu before replacing the fuel pump. Come to find out, one of the previous owners had already jumped the fuel ecu.

Agreed once its jumped any additional fueling issues it's the fuel pump for sure... I've parked it for now as I'm off work, so I'm working on an air leak... high idle can be due to an air leak somewhere... been googling and youtubing the shit out this and haven't really found a good answer so I'll be taking a few routes which I can hopefully find an answer, last ditch effort is rebuilding the IAC valve...

I bought a few plastic connections and silicone hoses and replaced all the vacuum lines as well.

Might just do that... Although I have my tachometer back more consistantly and my surge idle has been decreasing over the last week from 40minute surge idle to 10 last week, to nothing this morning.... So, will have to think about what I need to do...... like maybe rebuilding the ECU... that is still on my to do list as I want to rule out all mechanical issues before I can say give in and send it off.....

I'll have to re-plug the Fuel ECU and troubleshoot my IACV as I've been stalling again, but this time while I apply the brake and coming to a full stop... having the AC on has slightly helped...

Today was the day I found out my heater core was plugged up... As my Celica sits in the back yard half apart I've delegated daily driver status to this SC400 while I try to troubleshoot stuff at work and in transit, no not my best decision, but as my time at home is constraint to being a neutered dog, this is my best option....

so... while sitting there freezing my ass off, relative to the Northern Cali Bay area, it was 44 today, and my windows were all fogged up, so I decided to try my heater and defrost while I wait for it to warm up and clear my windows.. Just as my luck would have it, it blew cold air.....

Too late to grab the Tundra keys at O'dark 30, so I proceeded to use the windshield wipers just to see out the window 10 seconds down the road... Its a bitch to have everything reflect off and not being able to see anything.... Either way 25 minutes into my trip while Ace Venturing it with the seat warmers on I came to a decision... rolling up to an 18 wheeler, I thought to myself should I pass or just match my speed behind it, mind you its a 4 lane highway at times and others its 3. I made the swift decision to pass him on the Left of course... I felt a slight surge and a release in the HVAC system and on came the heat blasting at full force, to the point it fogged up my dash, now I could see out the window, but not my speed.... LOL... Yes, this is my life in a nutshell...

Well.... today was leg day... she refused to hold an idle, so I had to hold both brakes and gas pedal and feather it in and out.... I drove it all week no real big issues, except for today... will go and search for a "new" harness and experiment...

Well it's about that time.... this may be long and winded.. lol

I've had this car for about a year, and after starting a the daily driver duties temporarily I think it's about that time to start upgrading things.... 28 years more or less and am unsure of some components as they don't appear on service records...

rear suspension needs some attention as it is beginning to sag a bit and has bottomed out a few times, on a full tank of gas and a small box with rags with a gallon of oil, gallon of coolant, a basic tool box of 20 pieces, and a flattened empty box to lay on dirt, just in case, spare tire, and OEM Jack. Looking at coilovers and am leaning toward Tein all around, also looking to upgrade sway bars and wheels.

My Celica is the police attention magnet, so I'm keeping this as low to no attention magnet. Looking at wheels: Either aftermarket or Lexus OEM wheels from a newer model like the IS which are staggered or the 430 crowd. 18s are most likely, but will tryout my Celica's 17s while it sits on jackstands and my tires are expired....

so... sway bars may go with an aftermarket as the TRD Supra ones require discontinued parts and aftermarket choices are $250+ each.. and I need 2 which may have unintended consequences like cracking the subframe so... aftermarket it will be...

My amp is starting to go as well, so I may have to invest completely replacing my audio system eventually, its intermittent at this point as when I bottom out I will lose my radio audio, and my CD player goes into an error and I have to turn the radio off and back on, so it may be a sign...

I may cross post this on the other model build thread when I have enough parts piled up... if that's allowed, or I'll keep it here..

I reverted back to my fuel ECU, as that appears not to be an issue, as of yet... today I stalled out and it refused to start back up.. Called for a tow, and while I was there I started troubleshooting relays, and battery pushing all coils in, and checking for any damage. While my tow was still 90 minutes away, I decided to pull my rear seats again, and check on the jump I had made and low and behold, it appears to have shorted out the wire. It was burnt at one end, but fine on the other. So, I removed the wire, and plugged it back into the Fuel ECU, and it started right up. Welp... I swapped in a 95 ECM, which may mean that both ECMs are bad and required capacitor replacements on both of them... This "pandemic" has placed long wait times on capacitors, so I'm dead in the water for now...

Hadn't had time to update my misfortunes, but it is true, that shit happens in 3s.. LOL... OK discovered that my radiator is finished, on top of my fuel issues and ECM issues... Check these bad boys out... I will also include the frying of my jump wire... I think the gauge was too light and needed a thicker one...

radiator is leaking, probably 28 years old, so its time...
    rad.jpg

I have the radiator, but before I do all the work, I trusted my inspection, but verified what I needed by replacing the radiator cap. I ran the engine to operating temperature with everything off including the AC and radio. Turned it off and let it cool down, about 15 minutes later it started leaking... on the driver side, its probably a hairline crack that causes it to leak, as it is not major, but it can be...
    Leak.jpg

And finally the jump I had done previously failed, this is the end I clipped as I intended to jump it again, but decided not to, cuz I wanted to get home... which in turn had left me stranded to begin with... I have removed the jump completely and have replugged the Fuel ECU, as it was previously to me messing with it, and so far, so good... Luckily it didn't catch fire, or I'd be fucked, in the most literal sense... LOL... so with this, I may either just clip the harness and solder them together with heat shrink as to prevent a future fire, Or I may just invest in a piggy back for fuel and timing and evade these methods all together... I'm still researching whatever is the best option I may have...

Check out ClubLexus. That site has an over abundance of knowledge regarding these beasts. I had 3 SC400's, and I loved them, but commuting 120 miles a day was killing my pockets. Had to let it go. These cars can be serious money pits due to age. I think you should look into having the ECU looked at, I had some issues like you're describing and sending it in fixed them. The capacitors start leaking and cause issues you'll never solve without a fresh ECU. I do miss my 400 from time to time, very comfortable car, and my audio system was banging. The only way I'd get another one is if I found a 2000 or 99 with the extra horse power or a 92-95 5 speed.

I'm over there as well, but I'm not really getting any feedback.. sorta talking to myself.. LOL... got more responses here than there.. I am sending my ECU out next week, I'm getting a 3rd ECU tomorrow to troubleshoot mine... I'm running a 95 and been having similar issues.... love this car though.. they're going up in price.. saw a 94 300 5 speed for 10.5k raggedy though.

Been a while for this one... got my ECU rebuilt and she has been smooth like buttah
    image.jpg

Had issues with the radiator giving the engine money shots everytime I would take it out, so I decided to replace the rad... This one wasn't that bad, had thicker ones.. but eitherway..
    20211002_072909.jpg

Pulled the rad and this is what old and busted looked like..

Decided to try my luck and pulled the fan shroud apart from the radiator in the car and pull just the rad... and I got lucky...

    Screenshot_20211202-104456_Gallery.jpg

While working from the bottom this hose up here got me right in the mouth while I was praising this thing to the high heavens... I guess that's what I get.. from now on I will make sure to not open my mouth, LOL..

She idles perfectly and no overheating or anything..... I got heat though... which is great in 30 degree weather and no possibility of snow...

This brings back memories. My dad had one in '92, he was a leaser. got a '94 MK VII or VIII whatever it was called Lincoln with a 32 valve motor that sounded awesome, traded that in for a 96 SC400, then went SUVs.

    Enjoy.
