So I’m going on 3 months since I got my tundra and I’m looking underneath to check out the undercarriage when I see that there is no skid plate installed. Not sure if there was ever one to begin with

    It’s a 2016 2wd 1794, should it have came with one?

It came with a cheaply made thin sheet metal skid plate.

You can find them used for cheap when guys upgrade.

I upgraded to an RCI Metalworks with an oil filter access door. Love it!

Have had mine off about a year now, no biggie if not off roading. It has to be removed to change oil filter, probably jist not reinstalled.

    That’s an expensive forgotten item.

Depends on the options you pick. I went with raw aluminum and had it powdercoated locally, as I was worried shipping carriers handling may mess up the PC, I have that kind of luck.

After receiving the skid I wouldn't hesitate to order something powdercoated from RCI, even if it is shipped across the country. The skid was packaged great.

They frequently have different sales, just wrapped up a taxtime discount.

There may be a forum discount too.

The TRD skid also has an access door for the oil filter, however the TRD seems more for looks than actual protection.

I have a silly question, you're 2 wheel drive, where do you plan on going that you're worried about skid plates? Lol!:mudding:

Bahahahahahaha!! I've played enough in my 2WD with others driving 4WD, I've got chunks missing from my tires. Protection works best before you need it. :D

    Stock is so temporary
I wondered about not reinstalling. This is the first truck I have owned that came with a skid plate. It is not really needed if you don't off-road. Even back roads, fire roads, etc, not a requirement. I wonder how many owners ditch the damn thing.

    Maybe start a poll???

Definitely not needed, until you hit something that causes damage.

I don't really off road, but I think it's good insurance for debris in the roadway, for example something that is in my lane that can't be safely avoided like a retread or something.

I was able to remove the stock skid and install the RCI skid in my driveway, it didn't take long! I'm not sure what the TRD one entails, but....

Personally I like the protection even the stock one offers for debris in the road etc. I would also think it helps a little bit with aerodynamics. Certain models/packages just didn’t come with them for some reason.

Centuries ago when I was a kid I was driving our family Ambassador Rebel station wagon.. hoo...wee... anyways was heading into town and there had been a minor rock slide overnight during a heavy rain. Didn't have time to swerve and hit a rock just big enough to puncture tranny pan. Dead Rebel.......get the skid. TRD goodies are overpriced. I've got full RCI skids. Good stuff. There are other quality skids out there too. As mentioned skids are fairly easy to install.

My SR5 came with one used. I assume it was on there when new? Not much work to remove for oil changes. I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Just like 4x4. Never need it other than to back up my driveway when it snows or that big snow fall now and then. Look on CL for a used one. There is one up here for $40.
    Peace. D
