Resurrecting an old thread because I am currently going through this and wanted to share lessons learned.

2021 SR5 SX CM with 5.5ft bed. Factory spray in liner. Truck did not come with bed rails. All bed rail holes were covered. There are a few guide holes that Were exposed which is why you see my cutting out a hole next to a “clean” hole. (Those are the guide holes for the two bed rail pins).

I just bought a used OEM tonneau and wanted to make sure I had the threaded holes for the M6 bolts. Instead of open heart surgery, I decided to take my time to carefully locate the holes without destroying my brand new spray.

There are 5 little square bumps in the bed liner which is exactly where the bumps are on a naked bed (I went to the dealer and looked at a used CM with no bedliner for confirmation).

I took a sewing needle and a hammer and “eyeballed” where the hole would be on my truck. Tap tap tink... hit the side wall of the bed. Moved up/down/left/right and tap tap tap tap hollow. Meaning I found the hole. I did this to minimize the area of destruction on my new bed.

wiggle it around and estimate if you are dead center, or left right up down, and the use an exacto knife to puncture the hole and clean cut just large enough to get the bolt in there.

no drilling, no stripping, no M6 taps or rethreading.

I’ve attached a few photos of the surgery and glory hole.

If all goes as intended, I plan to install the tonneau and post a thread this week with full instructions and photos documenting the process for future reference.

I just did mine on Friday. I have a Double Cab though. Shouldn't matter.

I put the rail up using the plastic tabs to hold it in place and made sure it was level. I then used a tap punch in the center of each hole and found the holes each time. It made a big enough hole to fit the bolt in.

There are 5 bolts on the side rails and 4 on the front rail. Finished in about an hour at night with just a flashlight.

    Good luck!
