Came across this searching about my whine on decel. 70 miles into the breakin with Nitro 5.29s and Grip Pro LSD. Subbing so I can find this later if it goes away or needs adjusting.

    “Sometimes nitros are loud.
They can be hard to set up due to the shim package that comes with them.
But a good gear guy will know what to do.”

I have to run 80w-90 petro based due to the LSD so I'm gonna make some calls to Nitro and PowerTrax and see if that may be the cause and something I may just have to live with.

Limited Yota guys here in Maryland. Race car garage set them up for me so plenty of gear knowledge but self-admittedly they had never done a Tundra before.

I have the auburn lsd in mine too and talked to a few shops and they said it wont be an issue. I have been running it for 10k miles and its all good.

Pattern and pinion depth are in spec so I wonder if I just got a whiney set of gears? Nitros website even states some gears will whine regardless of perfect installation and it is not a warrantable condition. Honestly the sound does not bother me in the slightest, I am just concerned about something not being right and causing premature failure of either the gears or LSD unit.

steeper gears do tend to make more noise regardless. Run some thicker fluid and see if that helps

I may swap to a bit heavier than the 80w-90 GL5 petro after the break in and see if anything changes

    How do the 4:88s feel?
Are you running a 35 tire, approximately?

34s they feel perfect, truck doesn't gear hunt and always has power. The truck feels much happier.

Do you think 5:29s would have been too much?
    Or just more lively?

with 35s fine. I believe the rpm difference at 70 mph between 4:88s and 5:29 with 35s is only 100rpm

Really have to find a legit tech for these things. Gear noise can normal, it can also be related improper lash or backlash. Possibly like the OPs, I’m suspecting that the clearance and positioning may have caused drag or improper engagement, noise and unintended development can occur. So can heat or busted teeth lol.

I had gears done on my S2000 by a guy that had likely rebuilt a thousand plus diffs. Mine whined but were set correctly. Hell, Toyota has a known issue with the Tacos. My 2018 made so much noise I would never open the rear slider. Toyota says it’s normal.

The issue though is noise alone won’t tell you if they’re good or bad, unless is really abnormal noise, not typical gear whine. So, find someone that you can trust.

Yeah I mean I trust the guy as his experience is 30+ years with a reputable drag shop and offroad experience as well as he brought in a much more experienced guy who taught him the ropes to consult on the job. Truck feels fine, although I'm obviously babying it during break in. No discernable grinding or rubbing noises, just the whine upon decel. If any problems occur, I'll consult ECGS like you suggested. Will swap the oil to spec after 500 miles and see what, if any, changes.

Just picked mine up yesterday from having Nitro 5.29s installed. Following the break in now. Only thing I notice is a more of a whistling sounds rather than a whine when decelerating. No noticeable sounds while accelerating or cruise.

My Nitro 5.29s have been in about a month now. I’m almost at 1,000 miles on them, using Amsoil synthetic 75w-110 in front diff and 75w-140 in rear with ARB locker. They whine on coast and decel, but not while cruising or accelerating. The shop who did my install does almost exclusively Toyotas but mine was his first Tundra. Only fine iron dust on the magnet when I changed out the fluid, and the pattern looks pretty good based on the pics he provided me (can be seen here: https://www.tundras.com/threads/if-you-give-a-mouse-a-cookie.77279/page-2#post-2276186 post #40) so I don’t think I have a problem.

After first 500 miles/break-in the oil came out like tin man blood but only fine particles no chunks. Another 5,000 miles later the oil looks clean and new. Noise has not changed in volume that I can detect over that time period other than I've gotten used to it. I've come to terms with Nitro quality for noise, but the performance is great. After having them apart to check and recheck so many times I'm starting to wonder if my accel whine is actually the Auburn pro?

Mine whines too, but I noticed it whines more now on Nitro's oil than during break-in when I was on Toyota's oil, I had mine cryo and REM polished before installation, when it was on Toyota's oil, I can only hear the whine during decel, but now on Nitro's oil, there's a slight whine cruising at 55mph, it comes and go, I'm going back to Toyota oil after this, as the fluid was clean and I didn't have any issue with my Powertrax.

My whine still exists but I'm about 12k miles into it and they're still as good as ever. I've chalked it up to noisy gears is just the nature of a gear swap.

I ride with my windows down 90% of the time so not in my case. It may help but you'll get used to it. With the radio barely turned up, you can't hear it at all (at least with mine, that's how faint it is).

Agreed, not with the windows open it won't matter, especially the back window. Windows up and a little music and I can't hear it.

    Call Keith?

From my understanding it’s in the correct shims.

Also, an excellent source for install or info.

I can testify Ken was amazing, he took every note and showed it to me, will have him do 4runners diffs too.
