    Hey T
I think it is definitely time to have a heart to heart with your vet. Like you said, the past month has been hell for her with no end in sight. The unfortunate reality is that you're probably right about no end in sight. Even with all the diagnostics you could still do, I'm not sure it makes much difference at this point. It won't change the reality that there are very few treatment options beyond what you've already tried. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I'm here if you need me.

That's a great combo for fleas, ticks, and heartworms. I like Interceptor Plus because of its effectiveness. Heartgard is also an excellent choice. I have used both and you can't go wrong with either one.

Thank you Matt and Blue. I talked to the covering vet yesterday and adjusted her meds to see if that would help, but no change. Her normal vet is on tomorrow and I will have the conversation with him, as I didn't think it was fair to do that with a vet that doesn't really know her. Her quality of life is about zero now, it's come out walk around for about 1-2 minutes and then she goes back to hiding and not really wanting to be bothered. She did sleep with me last night which was very sweet and it broke my heart at the same time, and she was a bit perky this am, but it didn't last long.

I will let you know what the vet says....

Just wanted to say I know how much this hurts; and will keep y'all in my prayers. We went through something similar about 3 years ago with our dog. Out of nowhere he suddenly started limping bad, snapping at other dogs, and even around us, I could tell in his eyes that he "wanted" to snap at us but was trying hard to hold back.

Took him to the vet thinking he had a bad pulled/snapped tendon...and found out his entire right rear leg, from toe to hip joint, was ate up with bone cancer. :( I told my wife that as much as it hurt, we needed to put him down as it was way too far advanced to hope that any surgery would help.

Prior to putting him down I *thought* I wasn't a 'dog guy' but after putting him home and ugly crying all the way home (lol) I discovered differently.

Aww I am very sorry for the loss of your pup, but it sounds like you did the right thing for him. He is resting pain free now!

I could not believe this, but yesterday Fluffy literally came back to life, like someone flicked a switch. Maybe she heard me talking to the vet? She is back to herself more, walking around and interacting with people again. The vet did say that might be short lived, and that most likely I will have to make a tough decision in the coming days, weeks, or months. He said that if she continues to have a positive quality of life then keep on going with what we are doing and he is starting her on a new allergy medication that will not aggravate her heart failure like the steroid is. Fingers crossed, my girl has a very strong will to survive. I know that the inevitable will arrive one day, and no one knows when, but for now she is acting like herself again and we will enjoy her while we can!

    Alright fellas,
We have a 12yo female boston terrier that the wife thinks (any advice for chronic worrying human, lol) may have Cushing's Disease. I think she started to research it, because the dog pants quite a bit and has thinning hair on her back legs and tail/nub. The panting seems to happen in the evening when we put her in her kennel (dog is usually attached to the wife's hip) or if we go somewhere she pants in the truck the entire time, even if we have the ac blowing on her. Every once in a while i'll hear her in the middle of the night (mostly in summer time) panting really hard and the pillow inside her kennel will have a wet spot from the panting/slober.
To me, this seems like the dog wants to be with the wife and has anxiety when we separate them and causes panting, but i thought i'd check with you guys.
The thinning of her hair seems to be localized to the back of her hind legs and around her collar line. Her anal glands seem to clog and she will occasionally scoot her butt on the ground. We have to manually express them and then the scooting stops. We've tried adding pumpkin to her diet but didn't really seem to help too much. In my mind, the butt rubbing on the ground could be the cause of the thinning hair, but kinda wishy washy about it. I can upload a booty picture if it'll help.

Here's the symptoms from pets webMD:
    • is thirstier than usual - She drinks a decent amount first thing in the morning.
    • Seems hungrier - she eats a little more than our male boston terrier
    • Pees more often; housebroken dogs may have indoor accidents. - not really, i joke she's a camel because she hold it and then unloads
    • Loses hair or it seems slow to grow - yes on the back of her legs/tail
    • Gets a pot belly - she's a little curvy but in the 20-22lb range, before we feed her, i can feel her ribs (cant really see them much)
    • Has thinning skin - non that i know of
    • Seems very tired and inactive - she is in no way an active dog. She follows the wife around and sleeps/snores. I wonder if she doesn't sleep during the night because she naps all day
    • Pants a lot - yes when we put her in her kennel.
    • Gets skin infections - none that i know of. Over the last 4-5 years or so i've noticed she's forming some warts or bumps, but i've read that can be common as age goes.
I think she is over reacting, but i thought i'd check with you guys. When we got the dogs, i put my foot down and said that the dogs have to sleep in kennels, she wasn't happy about it but she agreed to it. I'm thinking about trying to let the dogs sleep with us for a few days/week and see if she doesn't drink as much water in the morning because she isn't panting as much and she might be a little more active because she's actually sleeping in the night.
Note: this could be a con the wife is doing to try to get me to agree to letting them sleep with us. ha!

    Hey there
I have never had a case of Cushing's disease where the dog wasn't PU/PD (urinates and drinks too much). The problem with Cushings is that it can be expensive to test for it. Most of the cases I've encountered had an elevated ALP (liver enzyme) on a routine chemistry bloodwork panel. Panting can be a sign, but panting can also mean pain or canine cognitive dysfunction.
Cushings can be treated, but again it can get expensive, and I also won't treat it without testing. The cheaper test is called a low dose dexamethasone test, the more expensive is an ACTH stimulation test b/c ACTH is pricey. Some clinics charge the same for both tests.
Talk to your vet. It's probably worth testing for it. Cushings is the most common endocrine disorder in dogs.

To Matt (Kerch), and anyone else who said a prayer and hoped for healing for my poor girl (Fluffy),

I let my Fluffy fly over the rainbow bridge today and be with her "brother", who I lost only a few months ago. She had a couple of rally days and I thought she was turning the corner and getting better, but the last couple of days had proved that wrong. She hasn't really eaten much in the past several weeks, and was just sitting oddly with her nose planted on the floor, not wanting to be touched today. She wasn't purring much anymore and it was obvious that she was fairly miserable and no longer enjoying being alive. I am so thankful, as painful as it is, that the real Fluffy visited us on Saturday to say good bye I guess. She acted like she was 2 years old again, full of energy, energy I hadn't seen in quite some time.

I never imagined a supposed food allergy would blossom into her dying because of all of her secondary problems (that I didn't even know she had), especially since I thought she seemed perfectly healthy only 3 months ago or so.

Anyway, I wanted to just update everyone, and thank you again, especially Matt for all the encouragement and advice you have given me over the past few months with both my cats. I appreciate it, as it is nice to have a second opinion when it comes to caring for our fur babies. We are so blessed to have such a wonderful, well educated vet on here!

I included a picture of my goofy girl , in her favorite sleeping position, when she was healthy. She was the biggest ball of lovable fluff on the planet, and I will always love and remember her.

    Hey everybody, meet Rocky!
I just spent 13k on my 12 year old Boxer/Golden mix a few weeks ago. He ruptured a disk, and became paralyzed. Luckily we had him in an MRI & surgery within 24 hours, and he is already back to jogging after his ball, and holding up his own rear end for pooping.

100% the best 13k I ever spent, period.

Now, if we had waited, even 1 day, that dog would have been forever disabled. 20200926_162648.jpg

Luckily, I was saving up to replace this old hot tub, and could cover the expense. No clue if I can even get this old tub to work, since replacing is not happening now, lolz. My new Fall project...20201015_083218.jpg

Glad it all worked out. Stories like this makes me feel a little better about buying pet insurance for my new puppy last year. I've always been against insurance policies in general but decided to give pet insurance a try for the first time. No claims yet, but it is just peace of mind. Hopefully my pet insurance company would cover something like this if it were ever to happen.

Kudos to you for pursuing the surgery. Sounds like recovery is going well. The hot tub can wait....

At the risk of another temporary :locked:, another dog food question.
My wife listened to a story on NPR about Robin and his dog food brand, gentle Giants. I don't know the price, but they claim there is 27 yo dog that has eaten nothing but this. When I was growing up my dad raised beagles and then tree dogs. I was taught that 21% protein and some fat was the best. This nutritional analysis looks good to me, but professional thoughts are always welcomed

I have a Weiner dog that’s a little over a year old now.

today I took him to our new house and of course he had to mark all over the yard. Fine by me but I’m pretty sure he dehydrated himself severely by marking so much. Sounds funny I know... but he was at it for hours.

When I brought him in he peed on the floor but it was brown/red.
I immediately gave him water and he seems to be doing fine now. His urine is back to normal color now.

Should i go ahead and take him to the vet?

    Hey there
I would have your vet run a urinalysis to make sure he doesn't have a bladder infection. The brown/red urine, frequent urination, and the fact that he urinated on the floor point towards a potential infection. An xray of the bladder is also a good idea to rule out bladder stones.

If I had to guess, you would get back under $1000 for something like this. Maybe nothing if they have a fine print loophole.

From my bad experience with it, they prorate as the animal gets older. So they may cover 95% less your deductible the first year, 80% for 2-3y, 70% for 4-5, etc etc.

Our dog was 10 or so when she needed something. I paid a few grand up front to the vet, got a cheque for like $200 back. I called them, the explained the above and I cancelled on the spot.

You may want to look into it to make sure you don't think you are covered when in fact your aren't. Congenital conditions aren't covered either.

We got the neuter report for our new dog today. Is this normal?

    Hey JMB
It can happen, though I don't need to anesthetize a male dog to check for testicles in the scrotum. Not sure why they did that.

Yeah, I thought it was weird. Especially since he doesn't even have a scrotum. I could see that the first time we met him.

Pics of his non scrotum? JK
The bet paperwork from SC say lab mix, but I don't think so. He doesn't like the water and he's destroyed two kong toys. My guess is pit mix. He's the one on the hearth in the last 20200919_150545.jpg 20200907_153021.jpg 1356.jpg pic.

    Looking for vet opinions here

4.5 year old Dutch Shepherd whos been in our home for several years. Working breed working line. Eats Diamond Natural 2 to 3 cups a day split into 2 meals.

Couple of days ago started being overly clingy consistent with not feeling well. Started drinking water non stop and seemingly can't get enough. Puked up his dinner 2 nights ago. Very panicked when I give him commands and is usually very sharp and on top of it.

Has been steady gaining weight despite plenty of activities and exercise and currently weighs 111lbs but should be around 90

Vet said seems like a thyroid problem, ran tests, no issues. Thyroid levels are 2.4. No indication of diabetes or Cushings disease. Eats normal, pees normal, poops normal.

Only change in the household is we put up a Christmas tree the weekend after Thanksgiving which means his bed gets moved appropriately 6 feet. We also got a chocolate lab puppy in July which he has been fine with.

    Any ideas?
