    @BillE ,

    I would sure like to hear about your power plant transition from LTSA's and maybe some contact info, experiences and such. I have learned that when going to upper management with a problem, it really helps when you also have a resolution or options. Sounds like you have a wealth of knowledge on the topic. On the thread, PM or whatever you like.

    It's one thing to complain about something to the "uppers" but as you have stated the "uppers" response is....."Well..what is the fix?" Good to have the answer. Career helper for sure. "They" will remember you.

    The analogy is that its like a car dealer, you get the service agreement and your contract is like a check off of what services you actually want, so each plant decides what they want and every agreement is different, they'll sell you on those little extras like paint protection at a car dealership, and hey you should really get this add on and this other one etc... maybe some people buy they're first car and get all the extras and later on you realized you don't need all that stuff or and could of just hired a third party that does it cheaper or do some of it yourself. There are tons of aftermarket parts and third party services that do the exact same thing but not everything, so a lot of times you go back to the car dealer for specific fixes, additions or maintenance. But some people feel comfortable only going to the dealer to get specific things done because of your warranty etc... I'm not exactly sure how a turbine is warrantied or details of a service contract work etc.. but I'm pretty sure we dropped the LTSA after that.

    Good information Billy and nice avatar!

    I'm sure we could do the turbine maintenance ourselves, but to me, that just doesn't sound like a sound investment in hiring the people to perform this work full time on suck a small fleet of turbines. The contracting out like you stated sounds like a better route to go.

    We don't do our own turbine maintenance, that's still contracted out locally, just minor stuff is done in house.

    Wait till you guys see the ones we're (Kiewit) are building for AES in Huntington Beach and Long Beach. Two combined cycles schedules running concurrently. Just got done building Cherokee for Xcel in Denver, TVA Allen in Memphis, and TVA Paradise in Kentucky. Gas plants are going crazy right now. Also just awarded $2B worth of them in PA.

    The only concern I have is dropping so much coal and then the price of NG just skyrockets. I watch the market every day, and it can really swing good. As I am typing this, we are .80 cents cheaper per megawatt than any of our coal units. That can change pretty quickly.

    What do you do that all four facilities use? I know in Windsor we have 6lines of the v110 blade and soon to be downgrading that to just 2 lines of v110 and picking up 4 of the v116 brighten blades has 2lines of v110 and I think 2 of the v112. I could be wrong on those numbers though.
    I'll admit I know nothing of the build process of the nacelle and the towers.

    My employer has calibration contracts at these facilities. We provide calibration and repair services for the test equipment that is used by Vestas. DMMs, Motor Testers, Hot Sticks, Current meters, Process Meters, Torque, you name it. Great contract. Too much extra paperwork. Especially at the Windsor blade facility. You will see "Transcat" calibration stickers on all the stuff we verify. We recently picked up Windsor a couple of months ago. Not sure who was doing the calibrations for Windsor previously. Don't care. We have it now... Heh.. Heh
    (actually the Windsor facility may have been doing their own calibrations internally. We just hired "Marlene". She was working at Windsor. A lot of companies want to outsource calibration. Calibration compliance IS a PITA. We are good at it. It's what we do and we can manage total calibration/records. If we fuck up it's on us not Vestas. We rarely f up. Won't last long in this business.)

    I just got to thinking...(I know...dangerous)..Our lab super went down to the Pueblo facility in January(If I remember correctly) to meet with the #2 guy managing the operation there and....the retiring guy in charge of calibration (like me, but not retiring), apparently the retiring guy and my boss got into a hissy fit over what Fluke calibrator is more "accurate"...5520 series vs 5700 series. Both of these units are mainstays at any legit cal lab.We have several of both. 5700 series blows away the 5520 series when it comes to DC volts/AC volts +wide band and specs. #2 guy says.."Are you guys getting pissed off at each other?" Wow!!! Normally not a good thing. Needless to say, my boss proved his point. #2 was impressed. We got that facility.
    (Dang...Not sure if I should have gone into so much detail. Too late now.) hit enter...

    Interesting. Calibration was probably being done by our on site matinance, but they just downsized pretty good. Quite a few operators there got moved back to production floor and took a pay cut.

    I want to preface......What I'm going to say is not political. Reality. Vestas gets a considerable amount of tax payer subsidies. Considerable amount. $ 10 of millions to offset costs. A couple of years ago the subsidies' authorized by Congress expired. Huge layoffs with all green energy companies. Congress (the House, which controls the purse strings,) finally renewed the funds. We lost a considerable amount of business. Got it back. Better than ever. Same with Vestas. Trump is not big on subsidies in general, neither am I, but wind energy is viable and practical in some cases. Trump likes jobs. I seriously doubt that he will do anything that eliminates good paying jobs. It's not unusual to trim the fat. Redundancies, usually admin folks. Best way to trim for example is "in house" calibration. Overall Quality positions are secure. As time goes by, subsidies should decrease as wind technology becomes more efficient decreasing costs. Hell, I have a bigger problem subsiding corn ethanol for bs flex fuel. Corn should be for food for human's & cattle. Check the price of beef lately??
