    Epic.

My wife informed me of this a few weeks ago.

In the same breath she notified me of her intention to trust Toyota's knowledge of the Tundra over the internet's ( or mine for that matter).

I agree, unless Toyota can provide hard evidence that ATF below 200° is harmful.

I'm surprised the Toyota bean counters have not come up with a TRD PRO ATF cooler and had us throw money at them....

For those who go ahead and install the cooler, sounds like 5oz max spills out during install.

Anyone installing the cooler sending their samples into Blackstone so we can get a larger sample?

    Their sample bottles take 3oz.

I am working with someone to install the MHX 514 bracket and cooler on their 2016. They're going to cap off the condenser and run a stand alone.

I got ATF pan and TC temps of 220 and above just driving it hard for a couple hours towing nothing. Toyota should have never deleted this.

    Playing devil's advocate here...

with new shift schedule chasing lockup like a crack fiend, there is less heat input into the transmission from torque converter.
With added cooling, keeping the atf temp below 200F for appreciable amount of time will not allow moisture to be released.
Colder atf can also produce more stress on the torque converter blades.

GM 8 spds had a rough go of it with TC shudder, (and a host of other issues) and many of the instances were traced to ATF with high moisture content. The repair scopes usually consisted of swapping out the ATF fluid, changing shift programming, and also replacing the TC.

How was this not a problem before they removed the ATF cooler and the ATF temp never rose above 212 degrees?

    Not sure if you’re serious...
We’re talking about 3 years ago - not 20. And the ATF WS hasn’t changed so...

And how do you know that Toyota was not planning for this 5 years ago knowing they had to change to the 1234 Freon and adjust shift logic and tc lock. I doubt that they just took the decision in one day and decided to flip the switch.
Unless someone comes forward and show us a fried transmission or bulk of failures in transmissions on 19 and up , we can keep speculating as much as we want .
Look at the Ford forums , 2018 and up f150 except the raptor and the v6 engine (non eco boost) does not have an external transmission cooler and seeing temps same as on 19 Toyota and up.

My whole post was about the potentail of moisture in the fluid causing a problem as suggested on the last page - nothing else. I don’t believe the lack of cooler will create an issue for 99%+ of Tundra drivers.

    Just playing devil's advocate speculating...

The TC and shift programming added enough heat to require a cooler.
Many trucks didn't have 4.30 gears (which helps unload the transmission)...meaning more TC unlock more often meaning more heat.
In some climates cold ATF might have been an issue...

I don't have a firm understanding of where the transmission cooler thermostat opens. I've heard 220F and also that it matches coolant thermostat at 195F. I've seen many threads where even with cooler the transmission pan temps were above 200F (even normal driving). So its hard for me to really buy into "never rose above 212F".

Thanks for the reply. I’m not saying you’re right or wrong I was just curious on the thought process since the design had been unchanged for 12 years and is known as one of the most reliable transmissions ever.

I’m always watching my ATF temp while towing and through the 52k miles I’ve driven the truck, the trans has been over 210 degrees about 25-50 of those miles at most. 213 is the highest I’ve ever seen and that was driving over payload capacity towing nearly 7,000 lbs up an 8% grade.
