Need advise please. I changed my starter and now the motor spudders at idle and cuts off. It will rev up when I give it gas while still spuddering. Question is, what did I do that would have caused this because the car ran fine before my starter busted. Air flow? Gas? I believe all my connections are correct.

Specs, year of truck? You disconnected battery before the install?

If you can keep it running, drive the vehicle for 15-20 minutes and see if the idle and driving parameters have changed favorably.
The ECU may need to "re-learn" the tune on your engine.
Just a WAG . . . and it costs nothing to try.

If I keep the gas going, it will run. I did try to leave it running, thinking it needed to purge out the air in the gas line. I may not have reached 15 minutes but I did run it for awhile, running it up and down from 2 rpm's to 4 rpm's. Didn't seem to fix it. Also. I get this weird thump sound (like a pop) from the motor. It is actually my wife's 2004 Lexus GX470 with the 4.7 liter (I own a 2007 Tundra) both have the same motor. I did disconnect the battery before I took off the starter. Thank you

Check all the vacuum lines also. Maybe accidently pulled out one of them while working on it.

What make of starter did you use for the replacement?

This ^^^^ is a possibility, but you would need to work under hood for that to happen. If you have O2 sensors on the exhaust pipe down in the starter area, check those for good electrical connections.

This is about the ECM getting bad or no information for engine control. You've disconnected something, either deliberately or unintentionally, for this to happen, imo. There is no other connection between a properly working starter and how your engine runs.

Thanks everyone for the advise. Last night I tore it all apart and put back together. I let it run (spuddering) until it got up to temperature. Them boom! it caught on fire in my garage! Almost burnt my home down. The Lexus is toast, melted my golf cart and stuff in garage. So I'm done. I will be trying to sell parts later after I clean up the mess.

Dayum. You're making me reconsider the need for a few BA (10# dry chemical) fire extinguishers scattered around the garage.

Sorry about the Lexus, golf cart and stuff. Home owner's insurance should help some with the pain, subject to your deductible. :(

Thanks everyone for responding (caring). I'm still in shock. Last night I was very thankful my home wasn't burnt down. There was so much smoke my daughter thought the power went out. Today I'm like dang, that was a great car and now it's garbage. I will be spending my weekend cleaning up. Just like that in a matter of 5 minutes I lost a car, Golf cart, & blinds. Get a GOOD fire extingwisher near by when working on a car.[IMG]

I know it doesn't matter now but what do you think may have caused the fire? Maybe loose fuel line that was leaking or something? I'm sure others would like to know also and maybe it will help the next guy out. Again sorry to hear about this unfortunate incident.

It had to be one of the two gas lines on the right side of the plenum. Either I busted it, didn't completely get back on, or didn't put back on at all. Weird thing is, the car was running (sputtering) but running. I wanted to let it run for a while trying to let it purge out any air and let system work it out.
