So, I'm adopted (because @War Machine didn't want me) and over the last few years I've really gotten to know my birthmom and her family. The family history is pretty cool, but there's one bit that's connected to the USMC.

My grandfather, a Canadian, apparently joined the USMC for a couple years during peace time. I guess he was a shit disturber and not really Marine material. The story goes he was only in for a year or two then he and his friend went AWOL back up into Canada to party. His friend never went back, but apparently grandpa did and spent 3 months in the brig before getting punted out. this would have been in the early 1950's. No later than 1956/57.

Not the most honorable of service, and for that I offer my apologies to the Corps for whatever that's worth. He was a good man, just young and dumb I guess.

My question is if there's any way to track down whatever records of his service are available. Being a bit of a history buff and learning about my birth family has me fascinated and being able to add to the geneology compilation my uncle as built up would be cool.

My problem is similar, but I want to track down the person. I was good friends with a WM while stationed at HQMC, and would really like to see her. I ve tried several times over the years, but I don t even know how to spell her name anymore, or whether she got married... I m thinking a PI is my only hope.

No luck so far. The National Personnel Records Center is closed due to covid so my request hasn't been processed, and this isn't something really important enough for me to pay $100+ USD to a research company for.

You might be able to contact a veterans group like AMVETS and tell them what you have going on. They have VSO's (Veteran Service Officers) and may be able to get some info for you, as long as you have proof that you are family.

I might look into that. I'll have to see what kind of proof I have. Even my birth certificate has my adopted name so I dont' share any official documentation with my birthfamily. Next time I talk to my birthmom and her family, I'll see if I can get a letter or something from them when they have time. This little project has been put on the backburner now that my grandmother (birthmom's mom) is in the hospital.

I know there was a thread a while back about finding someone’s records or reconnecting. Not sure if it will help as I have never used them but maybe togetherweserved.com or militaryonesource.com would be able to help.
