Need help. I am trying to install my MX4 tonneau cover on my 2021 Tundra, but I don't see what I need to do in order to lower the factory installed bed rail system. Anyone use the shims provided as well? If someone has a video of them installing it on a 2018 model or newer please respond. Forgot to mention that I have a spray-in liner. Guess that matters. Thanks in advance for any tips or help.

It’s suppose to come with brackets to lower it. When I get a chance I take a pic to show you

How sturdy are those shims? Do they flex a lot?

Mine do not flex at all. The factory cleats are rated to 200 lbs. I know I've used ratchet straps pulling more than that without any noticeable flex on the aluminum bracket extensions. I wouldn't use the rails to tie down a motorcycle, however, these can handle most normal cargo.

I just got in my Gator FX cover and I don’t see those aluminum shins to drop the rail system. Am I suppose to order that separately or what?

Did you order those Shims to drop the tails sperately?

Did you have to order it with the cover? I think I ducked up and ordered mine without it

For those that have the Bakflip MX4 cover...If I order it for the bed rail system, but don't yet have the bed rail system installed will it still work? Is it easy to just add the bed rail system a few months later or do you have to have the bed rail system installed for the MX4 designed for the bed rail to install properly? Hopefully you can follow that question! I'm thinking if no issue, there isn't a downside to ordering the MX4 for the bed rail system. I can install it without the bed rail, or just add the bed rail later. I should have all of the hardware to do so. If I order the MX4 designed for no bedrail then I would have to track down the extra brackets and fasteners later. I'm not sure I need the bed rail system so I thought I would just order the MX4 cover for a Tundra that has the bed rail system if I can add it later. If not, I'll probably pay the ransom and order the Toyota bed rail system first. Thanks for the help!

I called BAK last week to confirm that a tonneau cover that is made to interface with a bed rail system is incompatible with a truck without a bed rail.

I actually chatted with them too and they told me the same thing. I wasn't sure if the person on the phone knew for sure or just quoted what they see in the system. But when I look at the pictures it looks like it just adds a flat aluminum bracket that moves the bed rail system down. The pictures on this forum sure make it look possible. You may have to take it apart to put the brackets in at some point? Or there is another view that I'm missing that shows the system has to attach to the bed rail? So, I thought I'd double check with folks that may have looked at the parts in more detail.

I have the MX4 on my truck that I installed about a month ago. The bed rails has nothing to do with the cover. You can still install it without the rails because they clamp on to the bed underside lip. The reason it asked you with or without bed rails is so that they can include (for a price) the lowering kit for it. A few guys didn't even have to lower the bed rails, you just have to change the cleats round nut to a wing nut and it will clear the cover.

I just received my Toyota bed rails and my BakFlip MX4. Any advice or tips on the installation? I’m headed to get into my friends heated garage to install them both. Any advice that isn’t in the directions? I’m hoping to get this to be as leak free as possible. I do have the spray-in bed liner and all of the holes are covered up. I read a few other threads on how to deal with that. Thanks in advance for any help!

jr1016, very interested in your install process for the MX4, could you show an image of how it sits?

Let me know what pictures you want. I did finally install the bed rails and the MX4 cover. So far, very pleased. It was pretty straight forward but a few things missing in the instructions and they left out 1 screw for the strap buckle. They sent the missing part after a quick phone call. Here's some snap shots of the final install.IMG_0086.jpgIMG_0045.jpgIMG_0039.jpg

My preferred method is to not need other bed rails other than the stock ones that came with the truck, I see people think it’s so able. But is it different installing?
