Greatings from Texas, I just bought a 17 Tundra TTS with a 4.6, I know, I know, It fit our budget but now Im second guessing the towing. I believe the TTS is rated for 7k tow cap. We just bought a 1965 Holiday Rambler 21ft with a dry weight of 4700. Do I need a torsion or sway bar? What about Airshocks? I never even considered those and know Im screwed on MPG! Please Help!13745.jpg IMG_20201024_181838083_HDR.jpg

    Welcome!

Check the drivers side door jam for the actual tow rating for your truck.

Weight distribution hitch with a sway bar is a must.

I haven't heard of "air shocks" before. Do you mean Air Bags? If that is what you mean then you should know air bags do nothing except help with sag. They do not increase your tow or payload ratings.

EDIT: Air shocks do the same thing as air bags, and so the above still applies.

I assume you also meant that you want to keep the MPG up, and again, there is little you can do for that. When you tow, you will pay for it at the pump. There isn't much you can do to alter this besides driving slower.

I would recommend you check out this thread. Lots of vids on safe towing and how to make sure you aren't going beyond your truck's ratings. https://www.tundras.com/threads/tow-ratings-guide-how-to-be-safe.39211/

    and Welcome from Wyoming.

That's wild. Learn something new everyday. Thanks for sharing the info.

Looks like it is essentially an airbag built into a shock? If they are, I would guess that my statement for airbags would still apply, but I cannot be sure because I didn't even know these existed 20 minutes ago.

Check page 167 in your owner manual. Trailer Weight Rating (TWR) for CrewMax with 4.6L 2WD is 6700 pounds, 4WD is 6400 pounds. There is a whole list of ratings to confirm that you meet such as tongue weight, cargo load vs vehicle weight rating, etc.

What's your plan for transmission fluid cooling...that's our second favorite subject here right after what brand of motor oil and filters to use. :D

Air shocks is still widely used in different applications. Rancho, Monroe and others are still makes them mainly for domestic vehicles.

I see that now. It appears they function is the same as the airbags, so they will help with sag and maybe plush the ride a bit.

The only real concern I see for your truck would be the payload rating. It's not hard to chew through it on a Tundra.

Beautiful trailer, would love to see more pics.

As far as towing, never assume you know the dry/wet weight without getting it on a scale. Weigh her empty and then load up everything you are going to bring and weigh it again. Adjust gear as needed. Make sure your brakes are good on both vehicles. I like to keep my trailer under 80% of vehicle weight if I am towing further than a few dozen miles, but to each their own. Going light on the right pedal will help keep you safe and help with the mpg.

Back in the 80's I used air shocks to "jack up" the back of my Cutlass to fit the 60s under it. Real bad ass look. :)

Keep in mind that vehicle load capacity minus passengers and cargo will determine your allowable tongue weight. The vehicle load capacity must be adjusted for the weight of any added options and modifications. The placard on the driver-side door jamb provides an "adjusted" vehicle load capacity for any factory or port-added options or modifications. If you add anything else you should keep track as part of your "cargo".

I'm sure the oil they put in your truck is fine. That was an inside joke on us.

Stay tuned for 4.6L specific transmission cooler thoughts.

And, oh yeah, Welcome from the Texas Hill Country.

Those Holidays are all aluminum framed too and I bet your weight estimate is off but like was said above you will not really know until you weigh it yourself and thats where you need to start.

    Cool Trailer!
