Installed el-cheapo “tacticool” MOLLE seatback storage from Amazon on the driver side. I ran the lower strap behind the hard(ish) plastic lower back piece of the seat cover rather than looping it and the front of the seat for a cleaner look. I’m going to have to take a look at a cleaner setup at the top - the buckle kind of interferes with putting the headrest down into the lowest position. I’ll probably enlist my wife or MIL to do some modifications so I can customize the fit but it’s functional for now.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07PZCZHSY?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

Attached my first aid kit to it and dropped a couple other things into the upper pocket.

not a great picture - it’s dark too early!

Thanks. My plan is to use this to document things or I’ll forget. o_O

Compared to a lot of builds I see, mine will be pretty low-key. Lots of little things that I just find I prefer. No massive suspension upgrades or bumpers and lifts...I bought a Pro to satisfy most of those urges. :fingerscrossed:

My Fyre Flys interior LED kit (plus cargo lights and license plate lights) was in the mailbox today...so THAT had to go in tonight. I know a lot of people like the other brand, but I had the Fyre Fly kit in my last truck for nearly 10 years and you can’t beat the price. They have a brighter kit, but I think it would be too much. For sure the vanity mirror lights would be way too bright with the other bulbs.

    Some other observations:
My 2008 Double Cab SR5 had a light in the bottom of each door panel - a “puddle light” of sorts. Those bulbs are included in the FF kit, but there’s no where to install them. It also has a second bulb that is labeled as “Glove Box” but there’s no light in that either. I don’t really remember if my 2008 had a glove box light or not - I know there was one in the back of the mirror and another at the front of the center console (neither of which are in my 2021). It never ceases to amaze me some of the places TMC cut a corner to save another buck or two on these trucks over time...like those handy little compartments that were in the door handles of the Gen 2, or the upper glove box (which I used the crap out of). :notsure:

    Installed bed tie-downs.
Bought these ones that have a bigger bolt hole (and slightly bigger loop too).
Installed them on the top side of the bed bolt washers, which required pressing the washers off the bolts and then pressing the anchors and washers back onto the bolts (picture is the old dull hole-saw I used as a press sleeve, and then I just used a hammer to do the work).

Added my JH Kelly sticker to the back window. I’ve worked for them since 1997, and at this point they’re pretty much family (actually, a LOT of my extended in-law family does work there).

    Update 4/22/21
I just added the Chelly two-port plate to the rear console so that I could retain the rear 12V outlet AND have the USB charger.
    Look for that write-up here

Replaced the rear 12v plug with a dual USB port charger.
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GKK9HZT?ie=UTF8
Not an exact match for color, but close enough. The rear plug is only on with ACC, and the voltage only shows up when it has power.

    2F2A0740-71A6-4CEC-B123-B87770106D15.jpg

The hole for the old plug was a touch too small, but I used a step drill bit to open it up and it worked like a charm.
    ABE2C7AB-FBA2-4419-B3FD-3CFC8FEF7586.jpg

    Update 1/16/21
I was in the local Parkrose Hardware (an Ace on steroids) and came across these crimp connectors. The blade is the perfect width to fit the positive socket in the factory plug. I just had to file off the little nubs at the back to get the full length, but it is a solid piece so it is a much better fit than the original one I had filed down to make fit.

    8A7C229B-876B-4232-8420-68D53D8DCA68.jpg

I had the console apart to route the factory bed light wiring, so I swapped the plug out with one of these today.

Update 10/23/22: I removed this one in favor of a USB-C / USB-A one in this post

Got my N-Fab Podium steps this morning, so I pulled it into my MIL's shop and got them installed tonight. Start to finish under 40 min including reading the instructions and finding the right size wrenches and sockets to pull the bolts that were in there from the factory and install the steps with new bolts.

My bed and tailgate infills showed up, but didn’t get time to install last night. Hoping tonight. Also got my Tomahawk shifter (used - $90 with a full shifter assembly out of a wrecked 2009) yesterday. I need to decide how far I want to go with refinishing it (thinking of a tungsten cerakote, red anodized screws, and fresh leather).

Can you explain what makes the Tomahawk shifter special?

It was a TRD accessory available in the early days of the Gen 2 trucks (2007-2010 roughly) and has since been discontinued. It's really nice quality (solid fit, heavy construction), has a leather inlay for a touch of comfort, and is a horizontal-style shifter that feels like the throttle in an airplane.

For ME, personally, it is the shifter I had in my prior truck (2008 Tundra) for over 297k miles. I like to rest my right hand on the shifter (hold-over from all the miles I've driven in a manual transmission) and the horizontal grip is more comfortable to rest my hand on. So there's a little nostalgia and a little personal preference.

Ah ok, thanks for the explanation.

I thought it looks pretty cool but not sure if they have a special hidden feature that I wasn't aware of, may be it could've been removed in emergency and use it for self defense.

My G-tek door sill protectors arrived!
It’s raining like crazy outside, and that’s keeping me from installing my bed stamp infills, tailgate infill, DSPs and the in-bed axe and shovel mounts. This sucks...

OK - we had a sun break (don't like the weather in the PNW - wait 5 minutes). So I got busy.

G-Tek Fab Door Sill Protectors installed. I had these on my ‘08 (not the same set, but the same brand) and they were bulletproof for the whole time (roughly 270k miles that I had them on for).

Prepped and test fit for placement on the front:
    8FC9522F-A61A-48FC-BD92-F6ED47BC102F.jpg

    Actually installed (front then rear):

Tufskinz Tailgate Insert also got installed while I made good use of the short sun break!

If this isn't the source of the OEM insert, it's pretty darn close. And a LOT less than what the dealer wanted.

And then, after waiting out a rain squall, I got another window and got the Tufskinz Bed Stamp Insterts installed.

My money says that these are the same ones that the SE Toyota dealers are selling/installing on trucks - but for a much nicer price.

Probably, but I had never heard it until I moved out to Portland area. I definitely don’t remember hearing it growing up in N. Idaho or while I lived in Milwaukee. :notsure:

Looking good Casey. I'm interested in your shovel/axe set up. I'm hoping to find mounts that can be locked. I don't want to do any drilling on the truck though. Call it anal retentive or OCD, but my opinion is that drilling is for oil wells and cavities  I'd like to be able to make use of the bed rail tracks.

Check the build link in my signature.
You won't like my setup then - because it's gonna involve holes in the side of the bed (two on each side). It also involves pulling the upper fender well liners from the rear tires to get to where the bolts go through (using some stainless hardware and stainless nylok nuts). Here are photos of the mounts in my 2008 DC bed (so this would work perfect for your DC). What I love about this set up is that it is tucked up tight to the bed sides. If I go get a load of gravel or bark dust or dirt, this really is still out of the way and a little brush with a broom and it's all clean again. All of the setups I have seen that attach to the rails end up being a plate of some kind that drops straight down from the rail, which puts the tools significantly "into" the space of the bed. Note that in these photos, the bed rail is lowered by the brackets that came with the TC USA American Roll Cover I had on my DC (which is likely the same cover I'm going to put on this truck too). Obviously, a quick fist isn't lockable, but I don't know many people that would steal a shovel or axe out of a truck AND the rolling cover provided all the security I needed.

I may still get another set of Quick Fists and mount a hi-lift to the rail itself though.

The dealer gave me $8500 in trade, and with the sales tax offset it worked out to just over $9300 off in total. I had to push on them a little to get that for trade, but the total offset was pretty close to what I would have been able to sell it for outright, and I didn't have to do any work to sell it. So that was a win for me as well.

Casey, that looks to be a great set up. I like how the tools tuck neatly into the sides. I'll keep looking around for ideas. I don't plan on a bed cover and would still like to use the rail system. Somebody must have thought of this before.

This is in my Tacoma but it's the same idea with Quick Fists mounted to brackets attached to the rail.
