Same here. I think the new Titan has a gvwr of 8,200 and even the fully loaded model has a payload of 1,790. I’d trade my 3/4 ton ford gasser in on the new tundra in a heartbeat if it has the specs you mention

edit to add apparently it’s the Titan xd with the much better payload

The Titan XD gvwr is 8,600-8,800. That should be Toyota’s benchmark.

Interesting. I was/am just about to pull the trigger on a 2021 TRD Pro, but now I see that it will be more than just a new engine and some weight savings to improve payload. They're going to a new bolt pattern too. Looks like 6, instead of 5.

Does that mean that the axle of the 2022 will automatically be superior to the 2021? Will the GVWR be significantly higher?

Most likely yes, but lug nut count doesn’t automatically mean stronger. Tacoma have been 6 lug forever and they obviously have a lower axle rating. Bearing size, ring and pinion size and full float vs semi float mean more for strength than how many lug nuts an axle has.

The Tundra already has a bigger, heavier duty axle than any other 1/2 ton. That’s not the reason for the lower GVWR.

My pants all of a sudden got real tight thinking that it may be a standard 6.5 ft bed. I hope it is.

You’re right, 6 lugs doesn’t mean anything. The 3rd gen Taco struggles pulling it’s own ass up a hill.

I wish they would push it to those numbers but I have a feeling they won’t. After watching the interview with Mike he said they have no intentions of doing any kind of heavy duty truck. My guess is they will keep the same GVWR and do like the others and add in some aluminum so the truck it’s self is lighter but they will then gain some additional payload numbers.

Yeah when I had an 04 Tacoma and drove a 3rd gen, it just felt gutless. I always feel like a 6 lug has more wheel options though haha

If they do that I’ll be probably be buying a new Cummings in 2022 after owing 4 tundras. I’d probably keep my current truck around for a toy though. Make it a dedicated hunting/expo rig, even with 200k miles on it it’ll probably still be more reliable than a new ram. :notsure::facepalm:

I doubt I will be buying one.
The one I have now is great to drive and I would like to have more features in the truck I really doubt I would ever use them.

I wont go to a Ford or Chevy for my next truck if I ever do buy another one because I love Toyota.

But i wont get excited about a new Tundra due to the disappointments of all the others.

Adding another USB port just doesnt do it for me

In order for the tundra to still be a “half ton” and fall under epa rating the gvwr has to be 8500 lbs or less.
An interesting thought and one that’s probably a pipe dream, what if Toyota pushed the tundra above the half ton class to avoid an epa penalty? I’m not sure how the laws work for manufacturers having non epa rating vehicles in the line up and how that effects the “gas gussler” taxes

It's my understanding gas guzzler tax only applies to cars.

If Toyota doesn't do massive weight loss like the F-150 did, I think the GVWR has to be bumped to ~7.5+k to even give it equal payload to the rest of the half tons. Not sure Toyota will do that, given most half tons have a max GVWR in the 7,100 range except for the HD payload package F-150's which are 7,850 GVWR (LT, C rated tires)

GM had a 7600 lb GVWR on their previous gen 1500s with the max trailering package. After taking 450 lbs out of the weight of the truck, they were able to drop it to 7300 lbs and still (presumably) bump up the payload capacity on the new gen.

Now we know why the V6 TT. The weight saving will push up the payload number.

half ton trucks are still rated as cars I believe. It’s once you get above the 8500 gvwr that it no longer counts against you. At least that was my take away from EPA convoluted rules. The way government writes these rules should be criminal, so many grey areas and double speak, it makes my head spin and I have to re read it 20 times to even start to understand it.

I know fuel economy doesn't need to be reported for HD trucks. Does it also not count against a manufacturer's CAFE?

That’s what I’m getting at. If the epa doesn’t rate it, I can’t see how it would count against them. That’s why I’m saying I could actually be beneficial for Toyota to increase the gvwr above 8500 to make their overall mpg rating better. But I’m not sure how that actually works
